Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Professor Stella Christie, stated that the government will promote the development of applied sciences through vocational higher education.

According to her, almost all countries that have transitioned from middle-income to high-income status began by focusing on the development of applied sciences.

She acknowledged that the development of vocational education aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s four directives for the Red and White Cabinet.

“There are directives regarding job availability; measurable productivity; food, energy, and water security; and technology as an investment in human education. I believe the fourth directive is well-suited to vocational education,” the deputy minister explained after her visit and talk show at UGM’s Vocational College (SV UGM) on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

She further elaborated on the government’s strategic steps to enhance the quality of vocational education while bridging the gap between academia, industry, and government.

Referring to President Prabowo’s vision, she emphasized the importance of fostering strong connections among these sectors.

Every ministry and institution plans to facilitate collaboration to address national challenges.

However, Professor Christie acknowledged the existing stigma in society, which views applied sciences as second-class education.

Despite the elimination of the Directorate General of Vocational Education within the Ministry of Higher Education, the government remains committed to elevating the quality of vocational education to be on par with bachelor’s degree programs.

The decision to eliminate the directorate general was based on the principle of general relativity rather than special relativity.

“The hope is that vocational and academic education will no longer be compartmentalized but treated equally. We aim to foster this in creating a science and technology ecosystem,” she explained.

According to Professor Christie, the absence of a Directorate-General for Vocational Education does not mean vocational and polytechnic education lacks government support.

On the contrary, it aims to change the public’s perception, establishing vocational education as equivalent to general academic education.

“The government wants to ensure that the development of applied sciences can address national issues,” she said.

When asked about research developments in higher vocational education, Professor Christie emphasized the need for applied and fundamental research to progress together.

Both are crucial in solving current problems while anticipating future challenges.

She believes that researchers should not focus on whether their work is applied or fundamental but rather on what problems they aim to solve.

This, in turn, will determine the strength of research commercialization from the academic sector.

“Applied research is like low-hanging fruit, easy to pick and highly sought after by industry and society. However, the industry, government, and academia are currently disconnected,” Professor Christie remarked.

Dean of SV UGM, Professor Agus Maryono, admitted that vocational higher education in Indonesia still lags behind bachelor’s degree programs.

“We certainly hope for government initiatives to improve the quality of vocational education,” he said.

He noted that there is still a perception that vocational education is inferior to fundamental education, making it less appealing to industries and the public.

In reality, the development of applied sciences is essential.

“To improve quality, we need adequate resources. That’s why we at SV UGM have been working to build bridges with industry,” he concluded.

The Deputy Minister of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Anggito Abimanyu, has been inaugurated as a professor of economics at the Department of Economics and Business, Vocational College, Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM).

During his inaugural speech, Professor Abimanyu presented a lecture titled Islamic Economics as a Form of Compliance, a Way of Life, and a Beneficial Business Activity.

His speech was based on his journey in exploring the knowledge and benefits of Islamic economics in Indonesia.

“Islamic economics is a branch of economic science that adheres to Islamic laws and principles. Its practitioners follow it out of religious compliance or obligation, such as ensuring transactions are halal, beneficial, and free from usury. Others perceive Islamic economics as a way of life based on sharing, cleanliness, and health,” he explained.

Professor Abimanyu stated that Islamic economics has become an increasingly relevant discipline within macroeconomics, which covers policies and regulations.

Its appeal is not limited to Muslim students but also attracts non-Muslims. By the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Western countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom began promoting Islamic financial hubs.

“Many Western universities have also established centers for Islamic economic studies,” he noted.

He explained that in Indonesia, the history of Islamic economics, particularly Islamic banking, began with banking deregulation in 1983.

From that point, Bank Indonesia allowed six banks to determine their own interest rates and permitted profit-sharing systems in credit transactions.

“This deregulation laid the foundation for the development of Islamic banking in Indonesia,” he said.

In another part of his speech, Professor Abimanyu expressed that he no longer views Islamic economics merely as an alternative or complementary system to conventional economics.

Instead, he has developed a new perspective, seeing Islamic economics as an expression of religious obedience and submission to divine revelation.

Key aspects such as compliance, lifestyle, and societal benefits are fundamental to Islamic teachings, following halal transactions that strictly avoid gharar (transactional uncertainty), maysir (speculation), and riba (usury).

“It is not just about being halal, but also tayyib—promoting ethical and healthy consumption habits,” he emphasized.

Regarding the utilization and growing interest in Islamic economics in Indonesia, Professor Abimanyu noted that compliance, lifestyle, and business principles within Islamic economics have become focal points for Islamic scholars.

“My research focuses on aspects of religious adherence, lifestyle, and business decisions in choosing Islamic banking products, consuming halal goods, and the benefits of umrah travel,” he stated.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia highlighted that Professor Abimanyu is one of 525 active professors at UGM and one of five active professors at SV UGM.

Professor Abimanyu has held several notable positions, including Head of the Hajj Fund Management Agency (BPKH) from 2017 to 2022, Commissioner of BRI Syariah from 2015 to 2017, and Chief Economist of BRI from 2014 to 2017.

He served as Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency at the Ministry of Finance from 2003 to 2010 and as an expert staff member for the Minister of Finance from 1999 to 2003.

Before becoming Deputy Minister of Finance, he was the Head of the Department of Economics and Business at SV UGM, where he also lectured.

Several prominent national figures attended the inauguration ceremony, including Indonesia’s 11th Vice President Boediono, the 13th Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, and Professor Pratikno, the UGM Board of Trustees Chair.

Several coordinating ministers were also present, such as the Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, and the Presidential Adviser for Politics and Security, Wiranto.

Other attendees included Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Ganjar Pranowo, Anies Baswedan, Mahfud MD, and Deputy Minister of Law Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej.

Coordinating Minister Muhaimin Iskandar praised Professor Abimanyu for becoming a professor at SV UGM. He described it as an extraordinary accomplishment, especially given Professor Abimanyu’s focus on Islamic economics.

“UGM plays an integral role in advancing knowledge and its application in all aspects of development. Congratulations to Professor Abimanyu and UGM,” he said.

Similarly, Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto appreciated Professor Abimanyu’s inauguration.

“His lecture on Islamic economics and its relevance to modern lifestyles is significant and will help drive the growth of the Islamic economy,” he remarked.

The tragic incident that occurred to several students from Mojokerto, who were swept away by waves at Drini Beach on Wednesday (Jan. 29), claimed lives.

The incident began when several students were playing in the water and ended up near the rip current area.

The victims were located in a gap between coral reefs, which is often used as a route for boats. This event happened when wave conditions and tide levels were high enough to form a rip current.

Rip currents are narrow but powerful water streams, usually perpendicular from the shoreline towards the sea.

These currents form when incoming waves break near the shore, creating a feeder current. The energy is reflected back towards the sea, and several feeder currents accumulate into a strong “channel” of water that flows back out to sea.

Lecturer at the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM) Hendi Fachturohman stated that, based on his previous research, the Drini Beach area does indeed have a persistent rip current.

“This type of persistent rip current can appear at certain times when wave conditions are sufficient,” said the man, who is currently pursuing his studies in the UK, via phone on Friday (Jan. 31).

Fachturohman added that the formation of rip currents is influenced by hydrodynamic conditions, such as waves and tides, as well as the bathymetric conditions or the depth of the seabed.

Hard structures like cliffs can also contribute to the formation of rip currents, as they reflect incoming waves.

However, rip currents can be either stationary or shifting, depending on the seabed’s morphology when the rip current forms.

“Increased wave activity can also strengthen rip currents as they generate more powerful feeder currents,” he explained.

To prevent further casualties, Fachturohman shared tips on recognizing several signs that can help identify the presence of a rip current. The easiest sign to recognize is the absence of foam after the waves break.

If the waves do not break and the water surface appears calm without foam or ripples, it actually indicates a hazardous reverse current.

“Most importantly, if you can’t swim, never go too far into the sea, and always follow the safety warnings from the authorities,” he advised.

If caught in a rip current, swimming to the right or left side is recommended. Then, swim along with the rip current until you exit the channel when the rip current breaks apart, making it easier to swim back to shore.

This approach is better than fighting the current, which would be very difficult and drain a lot of energy.

“During rip current conditions, victims often lose energy because they try to fight the current,” he explained.

In terms of mitigation and visitor education, Fachturohman believes that all stakeholders need to come together to formulate safer tourism management.

The government should support efforts by paying more attention to mitigation in coastal areas for rip currents and other disaster threats.

Additionally, tourism managers are expected to prioritize visitor safety and security and actively engage in education and outreach.

“Tourists should also take the initiative to seek out information on what to do and avoid when visiting the beach. Above all, follow the instructions from the authorities,” he said.

According to Fachturohman, many educational media and methods can be used to raise public awareness about rip currents. Access to information is now very easy.

“As researchers, we have also made efforts to convey various mitigation methods in collaboration with various media,” he said.

Moreover, tour leaders or parties involved in the tourism sector can also convey information about rip currents.

“Study tours are actually a perfect opportunity to educate about such matters, providing a learning process in the field,” he concluded.

A UGM student team named ‘Pairgrowth Team’ won first place in the Capital Market Inclusion Competition at the 2024 Jambi Financial Inclusion Festival, held from Sept. 23 to Nov. 16, 2024, at Universitas Jambi.

The Pairgrowth Team consists of Ali Alexander (2021, Management, FEB UGM) and Elsa Firlyani (2021, Property Valuation Management, SV UGM).

The team was mentored by Dr. Eddy Junarsin, who served as their advisor. They triumphed over 34 other teams from various universities across Indonesia.

The Capital Market Study Group of Universitas Jambi conducted the competition online.

Alexander explained that the Pairgrowth team’s initial stage in this competition was to produce an equity research paper.

All teams in this stage were required to conduct a comprehensive analysis, covering macroeconomic aspects, industry, business profiles, business processes, financials, valuation, and risks related to the analyzed company.

“We and almost all the participating teams were tasked with analyzing PT Bank Mandiri, which was facing macroeconomic turbulence, making growth difficult, and we were also given the added challenge of addressing public skepticism toward BMRI stocks,” he said at the UGM campus, Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.

He revealed that PT Bank Mandiri, operating in the banking sector, differs from non-financial companies that have specific financial templates.

This condition posed a challenge in creating the valuation.

“However, since I am already accustomed to calculating banking valuations, I was able to complete it quickly and accurately,” he stated.

Amid the delight of the victory, Alexander and his teammate acknowledged that time management was a challenge during the competition.

While competing, Alexander also interned at PT Nestlé Indonesia. Thus, he had to manage his time between the internship and the competition.

Meanwhile, his teammate Elsa Firlyani was participating in a student exchange program abroad, which required her to adapt to the time zone differences.

“Despite the many challenges, we ultimately succeeded in winning and bringing glory to FEB UGM and UGM at the national level,” he concluded.

The ability to manage finances is very influential on MSMEs’ ability to advance and develop. Therefore, separating personal and business finances is very important for the sustainability of the business.

This was conveyed by Siti Muslihah, a lecturer from the Department of Economics and Business at the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM), at a training class entitled “Managing MSME Finances” at GIK UGM on Wednesday (Dec. 11).

Muslihah explained the financial management tips that MSME actors should follow: separating personal and business finances.

“This must be done. We need to open a special business account and track the transactions,” Muslihah emphasized.

However, preparing a budget is equally important. Muslihah explained the process of preparation, which starts with revenue analysis, cost identification, fund setting aside, budget allocations, and periodic monitoring and evaluation.

She also urged them to diligently record all types of transactions so that cash flow can be monitored, “If you diligently record all transactions, then it will be easier for us to see the profit and loss,” she explained.

Not stopping there, Muslihah suggested that MSME actors separate capital and profits. According to her, profits should be allocated for business capital investment, emergency funds, and personal interests.

This should be done to avoid the potential for MSMEs to be burdened with large debts or even bankruptcy.

“We must have savings from profits that can be used for operational expenses for at least 3 months. If you have to borrow, you can, but choose a low-interest one like KUR so that it is not burdensome,” she added.

In conclusion, Muslihah encouraged the participants to be closer to technology and utilize digital bookkeeping applications that are considered more practical.

In addition, she also encouraged optimizing digital sales through e-commerce, “If you encounter difficulties in your business, consulting with experts or learning digitalization from young people is a very good thing to do,” she concluded.

24 UGM students received scholarships from the Indonesia Morowali Industry Park (IMIP) Peduli Foundation. The scholarship recipients were from the Faculty of Engineering and the Vocational College.

The amount of the bonded scholarship covers each recipient’s tuition fees, so the total scholarship offered by the IMIP Foundation is Rp 321,500,000.

The scholarship was given by the HR Director of PT IMIP, Achmanto Mendatu, accompanied by the President Director of GCNS, Liu Jin Shan, witnessed by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito, and the Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Sindung Tjahyadi.

Dr. Sujito expressed his appreciation to the IMIP Foundation for providing scholarships for UGM students and his hope that this scholarship will support the smooth running of their studies.

He said this scholarship is a form of trust and commitment from UGM and IMIP to support education development for students who will later become part of Indonesia’s industrial development process.

“I think the partnership of UGM with the central government, local government, and the private sector is essential, especially in driving technological transformation. This synergy will certainly strengthen and advance the agendas in achieving strategic goals,” he said in the UGM Multimedia Room 2 on Monday (Dec. 9).

For the vice-rector, this scholarship support will help UGM students hone their abilities, which require mastering technology inside and outside the classroom.

He believes cooperation with the industrial world will open up more learning spaces. Students will have choices in advancing themselves to obtain the necessary competencies.

“Hopefully, it will later connect with the usefulness and needs of the industrial world. The rapid development of the industrial world in Indonesia will be a challenge for us. It’s not just about technical devices but also social responsibilities. Therefore, industrial development efforts in Indonesia have a vision for ecological development,” he added.

Achmanto Mendatu added that there are two reasons why the industrial world cares about education in Indonesia. First, the government encourages it. The government aims to accelerate the nation’s mission, which is a Golden Indonesia in 2045.

“At that time, Indonesia at least aspires to be a high-income country,” he said.

Second, there are development sectors that need to be improved. One of them is the downstream sector, which is believed to be able to increase income. Mendatu hopes that many scholarships will be given in the future.

He acknowledged that providing these scholarships would entice students to work in the downstream industry in the future.

“My message is that work is difficult. Don’t imagine working like what’s on TikTok, okay,” he said.

As an engineering graduate, he said, graduates who want to work must be willing to sweat. They may get oily, dusty, muddy, and so on.

“At first, it has to be like that; no job journey is immediately pleasant. We hope you will stay in our industry later. However, it is not impossible to move after the scholarship requirements are met,” he added.

Liu Jin Shan further stated that education is the foundation of societal progress and the key to producing a superior generation in the future.

He conveyed that since its establishment, PT Guang Ching Nickel and Stainless Steel (GCNS) has supported the IMIP Peduli Foundation and is committed to contributing to social progress, with education as one of its main focuses.

“Through cooperation with UGM, we hope to provide wider learning opportunities for outstanding students so that they can fully develop their potential and create more value for society,” he explained.

The Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada (SV UGM) is proud to announce its horror-comedy film, The Draft! (Setan Alas!).

Produced in 2023 and directed by Yusron Fuadi, a lecturer in the Applied Bachelor Program in Software Engineering Technology, the film successfully attracted attention at the prestigious Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, which took place from Nov. 13 to 24, 2024, in Toronto, Canada.

The Draft! tells the story of five university students on vacation at a remote villa. Their holiday turns into a terrifying ordeal when they realize their lives are controlled by seemingly unstoppable supernatural forces.

“The film presents a unique blend of horror, comedy, and creative meta elements, making it one of the festival’s standout works,” said Fuadi on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2024.

With full support from Dana Indonesiana by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Fuadi, the two lead actors—Adhin Abdul Hakim and Winner Wijaya—and film producer Fani Pramuditya attended the festival in Toronto to promote The Draft! to a global audience.

Fuadi expressed his pride and gratitude for the achievements of The Draft!’s production team.

He noted that bringing the film to Toronto would have been nearly impossible without the support of Dana Indonesiana.

The screening of The Draft! in Toronto marks a significant milestone for Indonesian cinema and demonstrates how collaboration between higher education institutions and the government can produce competitive work.

“This film is proof that the creativity of Indonesia’s academic community can compete on the international stage,” he said.

In a review published by Paul Enicola on Nov. 22, 2024, The Draft! was praised as “bold and full of creative chaos.”

Enicola further highlighted that the film reinvigorates the horror-comedy genre and delivers an intelligent, profound, and highly entertaining cinematic experience.

The Draft! is Yusron Fuadi’s fourth film after Pendekar Kesepian (2014), Tengkorak (2018), and Bambang (2022).

The film also won three awards at the 2023 Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival for Best Film, Best Storytelling, and Best Editing.

Fuadi has also been entrusted with directing a mystical slasher feature film, Darah Nyai, produced by Imaginarium Pictures.

“Currently, I am working on the film project Judgement and planning the next two films in the Tengkorak trilogy,” he concluded.

On Nov. 3, 1,008 students from 110 high schools across Indonesia participated in the 13th Tourism Olympiad, organized by the Tourism Business Program, UGM Vocational College (SV UGM).

The student representatives competed in nine categories: quiz, short film, tourism infographic, storytelling, guiding, karawitan (traditional Javanese music), written ideas, creative dance, and a tourism debate.

The event, held at SV UGM’s Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC) building, was themed “The Magical Chapter: Cultivating Everlasting Beauty Through Tourism.”

Fathiya Maulidatussyifa, Chair of the 13th Tourism Olympiad committee, explained that the event aims to encourage the younger generation to develop the tourism sector in various regions while providing a platform for high school students across Indonesia to showcase their talents and creativity.

“We want students to develop their ideas and creativity in tourism development,” she said.

She added that the Olympic winners competed for the Sultan Hamengkubuwono X Trophy, and the certificates awarded to the winners can be used to earn additional points when applying for the academic excellence-based entrance selection (SNBP) for their desired university.

Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Bendara, Chair of the Yogyakarta Regional Tourism Promotion Board, who officially opened the event, emphasized that tourism knowledge must be understood not only in theory but also in practice.

Therefore, tourism practitioners need confidence to carry out their duties.

“They must especially be friendly, creative, adaptive, disciplined, and most importantly, in addition to integrity, they must have empathy toward others,” she explained.

At this year’s tourism olympiad, the SMA Negeri 1 Wonogiri team won two gold medals in the karawitan and creative dance categories.

In the Tourism Debate category, SMAN 1 Kuta Utara took first place, MAN 2 Kota Kediri took second place, and SMKN 1 Bandung took third place.

The committee selected the theme “Marine Tourism: The Revival of Sustainable Tourism in Indonesia” for the infographic category. Participants were tasked with promoting the natural beauty of the sea, such as coral reefs, sandy beaches, exotic marine life, and the conservation and preservation of marine tourism in Indonesia.

In this category, SMA Progresif Bumi Shalawat won first place, SMAN 1 Purwokerto took second place, and SMAN 10 Samarinda secured third place. In addition to trophies and medals, the winners of the 13th Tourism Olympiad will also receive certificates of appreciation and cash prizes.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), Australia, have agreed to explore opportunities for a PhD student exchange program and research collaboration to enhance the quality of education at both institutions.

Two delegates from UTS visited the UGM campus on Wednesday (Nov. 6) to discuss this.

The Dean of the UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM), Professor Selo, warmly welcomed the meeting with UTS representatives, who were exploring opportunities for collaboration between UTS and UGM.

One such opportunity would allow UGM to send prospective PhD students to continue their studies at UTS.

“This effort is aimed at strengthening cooperation between UTS and UGM while introducing students to the international learning environment,” said Professor Selo.

Distinguished Professor Alaina Ammit, Associate Dean for the Faculty of Science at UTS, stated that this visit was to follow up on the collaborative discussions initiated in 2023.

She described the opportunity for collaboration between UTS and UGM as a bridge between the two universities to exchange experiences and collaborate in research.

“Moreover, UGM students who continue their studies at UTS are academically excellent,” said Professor Ammit.

She explained that UTS is a relatively young university. Established in 1988, UTS has quickly become one of the largest universities in Australia, with approximately 44,000 students.

UTS also offers excellent campus programs with cutting-edge facilities supporting learning and research activities. Located in Sydney, Australia, UTS provides a welcoming and conducive environment for students worldwide.

The discussion on collaboration extends beyond student exchanges. UGM is also exploring opportunities for institutional cooperation in research.

Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni at the UGM Faculty of Biology (Biology UGM), mentioned that this research collaboration would be carried out through research grants.

“We hope to collaborate with UTS, one of the top universities in Australia and the world, to expand UGM’s partnerships and improve the quality of education and research for both students and faculty,” explained Dr. Suyono.

Meanwhile, Dr. Endang Soelistiyowati, Vice Dean for Collaboration and Alumni at UGM Vocational School (SV UGM), expressed hope that this collaboration would enhance research quality and strengthen institutional ties between UGM and UTS.

“The research will cover areas such as clean energy, energy transition, water, clean water availability, and smart cities,” she said.

Dr. Soelistiyowati further noted that this collaboration could expand to include visiting professors and keynote/invited speakers for public lectures held at UGM.

Given the significant potential for collaboration, further meetings and discussions will be held to draft a memorandum of understanding that reinforces UGM and UTS’s dedication to cooperation.

“This collaboration is expected to strengthen UGM’s relationships with international partners,” she concluded.

In the past two years, the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM) has conducted community service activities in the Kulon Progo Regency area, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).

The SV UGM academic community has implemented programs to improve residents’ economic welfare and reduce poverty rates.

Some programs include IT training, tourism potential development training, providing production machinery for the community, grassroots economic development, and waste management.

Vice Dean for Research and Community Service, Dr. Wiryanta, reported that over the past two years, SV UGM has contributed to reducing poverty and improving the quality of economic growth in Kulon Progo.

“We have carried out community service in 11 villages in Kulon Progo, identified as areas with extreme poverty,” said Dr. Wiryanta during the 2024 National Seminar on Community Service Results (SNH2PM) and Service Expo themed “Innovation for Poverty Reduction and Regional Economic Growth,” Saturday (Nov. 9).

Dr. Wiryanta mentioned that a budget of Rp 1 billion was allocated to carry out the programs in the 11 villages.

“A total of Rp 1,010,000,000 has been disbursed, and 75% of SV UGM’s community service this year took place in Kulon Progo,” Dr. Wiryanta added.

Dean of SV UGM, Professor Agus Maryono, explained that the community service programs aimed to solve social and economic problems in Kulon Progo.

“For example, we assisted the community in creating simple rainwater harvesting systems to address drought issues,” he said.

Professor Maryono added that they also helped the community innovate on MSME products and strengthen business management, mainly targeting the youth.

According to him, SV UGM’s programs align with the new government’s initiatives, such as food self-sufficiency, clean water provision, poverty eradication, and education and health services.

Triyono, from the Secretariat of Kulon Progo Regency, expressed his appreciation for SV UGM’s significant contributions to Kulon Progo’s progress.

He said that this contribution has motivated the government to investigate the technologies developed by SV UGM and apply them to help the community.

Moreover, Triyono also appreciated the presence of UGM’s Field Research Center (FRC) building. He hoped that the building would drive the local economy with the presence of UGM students in Kulon Progo.

During the seminar, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, the Head of DIY’s Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), mentioned that the poverty rate in DIY has been trending downward each year.

“Data shows the government’s excellent performance in reducing extreme poverty from 2.63% in 2021 to 0.85% in 2024,” said Indrayanti.

The government has implemented several strategies to eradicate extreme poverty, including reducing expenditure burdens, increasing productivity and income, and minimizing poverty-stricken areas.
