Robots, combined with microcontroller components and sensors, are typically made from steel, aluminum, rubber, plastic, or cardboard.

However, in this case, a team from the UGM Faculty of Biology and the University of Edinburgh created a robot using the real skeleton of a monitor lizard.

This collaboration resulted in a necrobot monitor lizard capable of simple movements, serving as a learning tool in animal systematics.

This technology integrates science and engineering through cooperation between the two universities.

Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, a lecturer at Biology UGM, and Dr. Parvez Alam, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, initiated the research in September last year.

The idea began when Dr. Alam invited Leo Foulds and Nadia Ditta, two of his master’s degree students from the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, to come and work at the Animal Systematics Laboratory, Biology UGM, to study reptile skeletons, particularly those of monitor lizards and snakes.

“At that time, Biology lecturer Donan Satria Yudha provided information on the movement, taxonomy, and anatomy of reptiles in Indonesia,” Dr. Suyono explained in a statement to reporters on Friday (Feb. 7).

He said that during the first two weeks, the two teams divided tasks, with Dr. Alam recording the movements of live adult monitor lizards while walking.

Then, both teams studied the mechanics of the monitor lizard’s bones and performed a CT scan of the skeleton to create a mold of it.

“This skeleton mold would later be fitted with the robot machinery upon returning to Edinburgh,” he added.

In mid-January 2025, Dr. Alam contacted Dr. Suyono and Yudha to share a video showing the mold of the monitor lizard skeleton walking after being equipped with necrobot machinery.

At the end of January 2025, Alam returned to the Faculty of Biology UGM to install the robot machinery onto the actual monitor lizard skeleton.

“During the assembly of the robot machinery onto the monitor lizard skeleton, Yudha was assisted by Frans from the Museum of Biology and several students,” Dr. Suyono said.

The assembly process involved Yudha, a lecturer from the Animal Systematics Laboratory, working with FX Sugiyo Pranoto from the UGM Museum of Biology, and several students, including Rashif Naufal Andika, Ananto Puradi Nainggolan, Maula Haqul Dafa, Arkanniti Dibyawedha Adisajjana, and Afif Fatah Rizki.

Assembling the robot machinery onto the actual monitor lizard skeleton, according to Dr. Suyono, was not easy.

Dr. Alam completed it in three days, successfully creating a necrobot monitor lizard capable of simple movements.

This result was very satisfying, considering the materials, composition, and structure differences between the mold and the actual bones.

Dr. Alam later donated the necrobot monitor lizard to the Animal Systematics Laboratory, Biology UGM, as a new learning tool for lecturers and students.

“For the Faculty of Biology, the process of studying and assembling necrobots from a monitor lizard skeleton provides new knowledge,” he concluded.

Four hundred fifty-three academics and international organization activists from 50 countries participated in the 20th International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) Conference, which took place at UGM from Jan. 21 to 23.

The biennial conference, “Forced Displacement in an Urbanizing World,” was held in response to issues regarding forced migration, which is prevalent in countries such as Myanmar, Palestine, and Indonesia.

“Indonesia is one of the countries with a significant potential for natural disaster threats,” said Professor Tri Nuke Pudjiastuti, a researcher at the Research Center for Politics, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

During her keynote speech at the IASFM opening at Grha Sabha Pramana on Tuesday (Jan. 21), she emphasized that forced migration is necessary to ensure public safety.

According to Professor Pudjiastuti, forced migration has a long history in Southeast Asia. She mentioned three historical periods of forced migration in Southeast Asia, with the situation worsening since the Andaman Sea crisis.

To this day, every continent tends to implement defensive and uncooperative policies to protect its interests.

“Forced migration occurs due to the lack of legal and proper protection in fulfilling humanitarian needs,” she explained.

Dr. Queqo Ahimsam, an academic and researcher from Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Germany, said that he is researching international migration and has found that many countries have politically oriented policies toward becoming anti-immigrant nations.

“People are being forced to leave and relocate from their homes,” he said.

Dr. Realisa Darathea Masardi, a lecturer in the Department of Anthropology, emphasized that this international conference is expected to strengthen academic efforts to address forced migration issues.

“As a leading research university, Universitas Gadjah Mada must encourage academics to collaborate with activists and organizations related to forced migration,” she said.

According to her, the results of this conference should serve academic purposes and raise awareness among the Indonesian public.

The ultimate goal of this event is to broaden understanding, potentially influencing government policies that remain non-inclusive towards refugees in Indonesia.

“I believe this conference is intended to amplify unheard voices to reach the government,” she hoped.

In her welcoming remarks, UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia expressed her appreciation to the academics, researchers, and international organization activists who spoke and attended the conference.

“It is an honor for Universitas Gadjah Mada to host the 20th IASFM. I would also like to extend my thanks to all parties who supported the success of this conference,” she said.

The rector further stated that Universitas Gadjah Mada is committed to advancing knowledge through contemporary research, which will positively impact policy development and provide a platform for migrant voices to be heard.

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DTMI), UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM), once again held the Freshmore Asian Cross-Curricular Trips (FACT) in collaboration with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

FACT manifests UGM and SUTD’s commitment to providing clean and renewable energy as part of their community service efforts.

The activity, which took place from Jan. 6 to 10, focused on modeling uncertainty and designing a PV system for the riverside community.

This year’s FACT was attended by 43 UGM students from the DTMI, Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI), Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK), and 33 students from SUTD.

Dr. Achmad Pratama Rifai from DTMI UGM stated that FACT participants worked together in groups at the DTMI Technical Drawing Laboratory, RW 05 Kalurahan Terban, and the Kalurahan Cokrodiningratan Wastewater Treatment Installation.

In line with the theme, participants were tasked with designing a model for installing solar panels that could be utilized by the communities in Terban and Cokrodiningratan for daily activities requiring electricity, such as community gatherings, water pumping for clean water, and wastewater treatment.

On the first day, participants received a briefing and background materials about the locations for the solar panel installations. This was important to provide an initial understanding of the sites to be visited.

“Several solar panels are already installed at different points. Participants will model the potential spots for solar panel installations,” explained Dr. Rifai.

He added that with the foundational knowledge gained, participants were taken on a field trip on the second day to visit the sites in Terban and Cokrodiningratan.

Supriyanto, the Head of RW 05 Kalurahan Terban, welcomed the field trip at the Nidaul Jannah Mosque Hall in Terban. The residents of Terban warmly welcomed the participants.

“We are happy to welcome guests from SUTD again. We hope the activities will run smoothly,” said Supriyanto.

On the first day, after being divided into groups, participants proceeded to their respective sites to gather detailed data necessary for their tasks, assisted by liaison officers (LO) from the Industrial Engineering Student Association (HMTI) UGM and local community officials.

After the field trip, participants had the opportunity to reflect on their visit and engage in discussions to prepare the models for presentation.

The designed models’ presentations were then conducted, with each group given 7 minutes to present and 10 minutes for questions from the judges.

The judging panel consisted of Dr. Wong Wei Pin (SUTD), Dr. Achmad Pratama Rifai (DTMI UGM), and Dr. Robertus Dhimas Dhewangga Putra (DTMI UGM).

The judges assessed several aspects of the participants’ presentations, including the formulation of the problem statement, data presentation, determination of hypotheses and analysis boundaries, solution methods, presentation of solutions and their impacts, and the group’s presentation performance.

Based on their evaluation, the judges selected one best team and two best individual participants, one from UGM and one from SUTD.

After completing the evaluations, the judges named Team 9 the best team and Srikanth Srider (SUTD) and Chika Zenita Sabrina (DTK UGM) the best participants.

The participants then had the opportunity to attend lectures from UGM and SUTD faculty members. They participated in lectures delivered by Dr. Wong Wei Pin (SUTD), Syahirul Alim Ritonga (UGM), Dr. Jose Rafael Martinez Garcia (SUTD), and Dr. Yun Prihantina Mulyani (UGM).

In his closing remarks, Dr. Jose Rafael Martinez Garcia reminded the participants about the importance of considering human aspects in the community, even in quantitative modeling.

“Considering the human aspect in a community is also important,” explained Dr. Garcia.

Dr. Wong Wei Pin expressed a similar sentiment, wishing that both SUTD and UGM participants could learn valuable lessons from the FACT program.

“The participants’ creativity was awe-inspiring. I hope everyone gained valuable insights and continues to innovate in designing human-centered solutions,” he added.

Dr. Adhika Widyaparaga, Secretary of DTMI UGM, explained that this year’s FACT topic is related to the SDGs, such as affordable clean energy.

“Modelling uncertainty in FACT plays a significant role in realizing this by designing the right energy generation system to avoid potential errors,” he said.

Dr. Widyaparaga hopes that this community service activity, a collaboration between the two universities, will inspire students to continue innovating to produce clean, renewable, and affordable energy.

Forced migration due to war, ethnic and religious conflicts, and natural disasters is a critical issue requiring attention from multiple stakeholders.

According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), by the end of 2022, 108.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced, with 76% being hosted in low- and middle-income countries.

Two-thirds of these refugees and forcibly displaced individuals chose urban areas to seek better economic and social opportunities.

This trend places urban areas at the forefront of the issue, necessitating more focused attention on urban planning and regulations to ensure better, scalable, and sustainable responses to the crisis.

In response to the forced migration issue, the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), in collaboration with the Resilience Development Initiative Urban Refugees (RDI UREF) Research Group, plans to host the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) Conference. The event is scheduled to take place from Jan. 20 to 23 at the UGM campus.

The Dean of FIB UGM, Professor Setiadi, stated that the international conference, themed “Forced Displacement in an Urbanizing World,” aims to advance knowledge and activism with a particular focus on urban issues and population displacement, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

The event will feature contributions from international and local experts, early-career researchers, students, and enthusiasts who will enrich the discussions.

“We hope participants will exchange knowledge from various disciplines related to forced migration and urban management, fostering future collaborations and partnerships,” said Professor Setiadi in a press statement on Friday (Jan. 3).

The dean noted that collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and other parties could contribute to the development of policy briefs on forced displacement, which could serve as a reference for future governmental policies.

The Asia-Pacific region has seen a significant increase in forced migration alongside regular migration trends. In 2023, the region was home to approximately 14.7 million people under UNHCR’s mandate, including 7 million refugees and asylum seekers, 4.9 million internally displaced persons, and 2.5 million stateless individuals.

“Unfortunately, many developing countries in the region lack adequate resources to respond to refugees’ needs, with limited examples of ideal practices and mechanisms,” Professor Setiadi explained.

In Indonesia, the risk of internal displacement has risen due to vulnerability to natural disasters, rapid urbanization, population growth, and internal conflicts.

According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC), Indonesia recorded 749,000 internally displaced persons at the end of 2021, including 73,000 displaced by conflict and violence and 155,000 displaced by disasters and environmental factors.

Additionally, according to the April 2024 UNHCR Fact Sheet, Indonesia hosts over 12,000 refugees and asylum seekers registered with UNHCR in several major cities.

The IASFM 2025 Conference offers a diverse program for participants. Pre-conference activities include two workshops designed for students and early-career researchers: Creative Research Methods and Ethics of Conducting Research on Forced Displacement and Design Thinking and Forced Displacement as a Wicked Problem.

During the conference, attendees can participate in plenary sessions, ignite stages, special stages, art installations, and exhibition booths.

The conference will culminate in plenary sessions focusing on three critical topics: Reflections on the Global Agenda for International Migration, (Re)Conceptualizing Urban Displacement and the Right to the City, and Contemporary Approaches to Urban Displacement.

These topics were chosen to explore how migration and displacement to urban areas have evolved over the years.

The main sessions will feature roundtable discussions on regional approaches to urban displacement in the Asia-Pacific region.

Topics include the Bali Process, ASEAN, SAARC, the Pacific Islands Forum, other multilateral collaborations, and issues such as Rohingya displacement and refugee-led movements advocating for the right to the city.

The IASFM 2025 organizers, as part of an advocacy network for refugee management in Indonesia, aim to translate the conference discussions into practical solutions.

It is hoped that IASFM 2025 will contribute significantly to evidence-based policy changes in Indonesia and the broader region.

The collaboration was discussed during a meeting between the President of Hanyang University and UGM leaders on Thursday (Dec. 12) at the UGM Central Office.

UGM’s Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, warmly welcomed the proposed student exchange programs through the Indonesia International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) scheme and UGM’s International Undergraduate Program (IUP).

“We are delighted to embrace this collaboration, and UGM has spent years building connections with international universities. Therefore, we aim to further expand student exchange programs,” said Professor Udasmoro.

Dr. Ki-Jeong Lee, President of Hanyang University, presented three main programs: student exchange for summer and winter courses, faculty exchange, and AI-based research.

He highlighted UGM as a strong partner with great potential for advancing AI education and research.

“We hope to establish cooperation not just between universities but also among faculties,” he remarked.

Dr. Jae-Hoon Jung, Director of International Cooperation at Hanyang University, further elaborated that Hanyang University offers numerous funding opportunities for AI research. He desired faculty members from both institutions to initiate joint projects.

“This collaboration will focus primarily on engineering for AI development. Many students are particularly interested in AI for addressing social issues and mental health,” he explained.

Seven UGM faculty representatives were also positively receptive to the proposed partnership at the meeting.

These faculties included the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA), Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK), and Faculty of Engineering (FT).

Each faculty will establish cooperation programs aligned with their respective clusters in collaboration with Hanyang University faculties.

As noted, the partnership between UGM and Hanyang University began in 2006 and was renewed in 2023.

Over the course of this collaboration, 39 UGM students have successfully participated in exchange programs at Hanyang University. Additionally, through short course programs, more Hanyang University students are expected to have the opportunity to study at UGM.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), known for its inclusivity, especially toward international students, has initiated educational collaboration and promoted its international undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the Indonesian Embassy in Timor Leste.

The partnership visit, which took place from Nov. 21 to 24, was led by Professor Wening Udasmoro, UGM’s Vice Rector for Education and Teaching.

She was accompanied by the Heads of the Admissions and Educational Development Subdirectorates and representatives from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing.

The visit began with a meeting between UGM delegates and key Timor Leste officials, including the Second Deputy Prime Minister Mariano Assanami Sabino Lopes, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Culture Jose Honorio da Costa Geronimo, and Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Dulce de Jesus Soares.

Discussions revealed potential collaborations in establishing academic programs in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, forestry, tourism, engineering, and marine biology.

Mariano Assanami Sabino Lopes highlighted Timor Leste’s challenges due to limited human resources, emphasizing that education remains a top priority alongside agriculture, forestry, and animal husbandry.

Similarly, Jose Honorio da Costa Geronimo noted that Timor Leste struggles with the limited quantity and quality of its human resources, which hinders the establishment of master’s programs.

Professor Udasmoro responded to the strong interest in UGM by proposing educational opportunities for lecturers from Timor Leste.

The visit aims to facilitate Timor Leste academics’ pursuit of doctoral programs at UGM by increasing partial and full scholarships and simplifying the admission process.

“We hope this visit opens more opportunities for prospective students and lecturers from Timor Leste to study at UGM,” she said.

Acknowledging Timor Leste lecturers’ low publication rates, Professor Udasmoro encouraged them to use UGM’s nationally accredited Sinta journals for their research.

“I hope this motivates lecturers to actively engage in research and publish their findings in scientific journals,” she added.

The second day of the visit included outreach to over 500 high school students in Timor Leste to introduce UGM’s undergraduate and applied bachelor’s programs.

Professor Udasmoro presented UGM’s international programs, benefits, campus facilities, and the opportunity for double-degree or joint-degree programs with partner universities abroad.

On the third day, UGM introduced its postgraduate programs to 200 participants, emphasizing scholarship opportunities. The participants showed enthusiasm, asking questions about postgraduate admission procedures and requirements.

The visit concluded with a meeting between the UGM delegation and UGM alumni in Timor Leste.

Discussions included plans to establish KAGAMA Timor Leste, the alumni association, and opportunities for alumni to contribute as examiners for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral theses at UGM.

This visit to Timor Leste followed UGM’s earlier international outreach to Myanmar in early November. The Indonesian Embassy in Dili, represented by Police G. Mikel da Costa, welcomed UGM’s efforts to promote its academic programs.

“This visit not only strengthens collaboration between UGM and Timor Leste in the tri-dharma mission but also serves as a model for other institutions,” Costa remarked.
