The Special Region of Yogyakarta is one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting more visitors than Bali, Lombok, and other regions. To boost its appeal to tourists, Yogyakarta has established 25 tourism villages, which are expected to offer alternative destinations for visitors to enjoy culture-based tourism.

Dr. Destha Titi Raharjana, a researcher at the UGM Center for Tourism Studies (Puspar), stated that the Terban area has the potential to develop a culture-based tourism village.

He believes that Cik Di Tiro Street, connected to the Kota Baru area, could serve as an interesting storyline for a tourism package.

“By exploring the historical potential, we can create opportunities and add value to tourism,” he said in a statement sent to journalists on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.

Dr. Raharjana is optimistic about Terban’s development as a historical tourism area, especially after its designation as a Cultural Village, which could strengthen the area’s cultural identity.

He mentioned that Terban still preserves various cultural traditions, such as Ruwahan, Rejeban, Saparan, and Merti Belik, all of which should be identified and packaged as cultural products for Terban event calendars.

Husni Eko Prabowo, Head of the Tourism Resource Development Department at Yogyakarta City Government, said his office is supporting the development of tourism resources in Terban.

There is currently only one tourism village in Baciro in the Gondokusuman District. He is committed to facilitating public ideas for tourism development.

“Our priority is adding more tourism villages and strengthening local commitment. After the village is established, what happens next? We know Terban already has a tourism awareness group (pokdarwis). Let’s work with pokdarwis to encourage the development of local champions to seriously promote Terban as a tourism village,” he explained.

Diandra, a UGM Community Service Unit YO-175 team member, is leading a program called ‘Terban Sadar Wisata: Independent Tourism Development for the Village.’

She explained that the team is working to support the development of tourism based on the creative economy.

“Terban has various historical potentials that should be explored and introduced to the current generation,” she said.

To boost tourism development, Diandra mentioned that the KKN students successfully compiled a tourism profile book to serve as a reference for developing tourism potential.

“We hope that what we’ve done can serve as a foundation for further tourism development in Terban, including strengthening the collaborative institutions already in place,” she added.

Diandra hopes that the programs executed by the KKN students will continue through community initiatives and be further developed by future KKN teams.

Terban Village Head, Sigit Kusuma Atmaja, highlighted several historical buildings in Terban.

According to him, these buildings have interesting historical stories.

One example is the Police Post Office located north of Gramedia, which was once the headquarters of the Indonesian Army.

“This former Haji Salim’s house is now a Bumbu Desa restaurant,” he explained.

He mentioned that he had received a visit from the Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff (KSAL), who was interested in the Navy’s history.

According to some sources, the Navy’s headquarters was once located in Terban.

The Galuh Hotel, located east of SMA 9, was a Navy hospital.

In 2024, Bappenas also conducted similar research, sending a team to study the origins of the National Economic Council.

“The Panti Rekso Putro building was once considered the birthplace of Bappenas. Dr. Yap’s eye hospital was one of the most advanced eye hospitals and a reference for eye treatment from various regions, including overseas,” Atmaja said.

He added that the people of Terban have mapped out various strategic plans for developing tourism in the area, including educational-based tourism that showcases Terban’s rich historical heritage and digital promotion of culinary tourism.

“We have a lot of potential. Not only for developing tourist attractions, but Terban also has many young people who have had the opportunity to intern in hospitality, which helps improve skills within the community,” he concluded.

The KKN PPM UGM monitoring and evaluation (monev) team visited the Pacitan Regent’s Office.

The visit, led by UGM Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito, along with members of Commissions 1 and 2 of UGM’s Academic Senate (SA), was welcomed by Pacitan Regent Indrata Nur Bayuaji and local government officials on Tuesday (Jan. 21).

During the visit, discussions focused on development issues in Pacitan Regency. Several challenges remain in Pacitan’s efforts to improve the welfare of its residents.

The region’s geographic advantages and natural tourism potential have not yet been fully optimized. Therefore, the Pacitan Regency Government is open to UGM experts advancing development, particularly in the tourism sector.

Indrata Nur Bayuaji noted that the relationship with UGM has been positive. One indicator of this is the large number of Pacitan government employees who are UGM graduates.

“Our target is for some to pursue doctoral programs at UGM. There’s still much work to be done in Pacitan, as reflected by our geographic conditions. The arrival of UGM experts and KKN students is certainly very helpful for the Pacitan Regency Government,” he said.

Bayuaji believes that the current era is one of collaborative work. Building Pacitan, he said, requires input from various sources.

“To develop Pacitan, we need input from Pacitan residents and everyone. Collaborative work is key, and we are open to contributions from anyone,” he added.

Dr. Sujito mentioned that KKN PPM UGM has been implemented in 35 provinces across Indonesia. Issues usually need to be addressed in each KKN location.

KKN PPM in Pacitan has been ongoing since 2018, and the student placements in Punung District have varied.

“Thank you for the warm reception from the community. The Pacitan local government has received KKN well,” he explained.

He added that in every KKN implementation, UGM collaborates with alumni and both public and private local universities. UGM’s principle in conducting KKN is to collaborate with various stakeholders.

“We present programs such as strengthening the creative economy (MSMEs), developing local potential, and in this area, focusing on geopark development, updating regional data, and more,” he explained.

Dr. Sujito hopes that through KKN, UGM students can identify village potential that is aligned with the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD).

He also hopes that the Pacitan Regency Government will assist UGM students, enabling them to discuss theories and understand the reality on the ground.

“The work done by UGM students is expected to empower the community. We extend our thanks to the regent and the SKPD team, as past experiences have shown that the growing development of rural communities encourages UGM to continuously collaborate,” he said.

Professor T. Yoyok Wahyu Subroto from UGM’s Academic Senate Commission 1 highlighted the significant potential of Pacitan Regency, which should be developed more optimally.

He hopes that tourism development in the area can become a pillar of economic growth, particularly in Pacitan Regency and East Java Province as a whole.

“Pacitan Regency needs to develop a Regional Tourism Development Master Plan (Ripparda). This is essential as a guide for tourism development. UGM has many experts and a Center for Tourism Studies that can assist with this,” he explained.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed the visit of the Minister of Transmigration of the Republic of Indonesia, Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara, to the UGM Central Office last Tuesday (Jan. 14).

This meeting marked an important moment in strengthening collaboration between the government and universities to develop transmigration areas based on qualified human resources and technology.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia emphasized the crucial role of UGM in supporting the transmigration program through a comprehensive approach. According to her, development will not succeed unless it starts by addressing the root problems in society.

“We are fully prepared to collaborate in developing transmigration areas, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, animal husbandry, and fisheries,” said Professor Emilia.

To support the development of transmigration areas, UGM offers various strategic policy innovation initiatives in the field of transmigration.

One such initiative involves student participation in thematic Community Service Programs (KKN) in transmigration areas. UGM also provides opportunities for distance education in frontier, outermost, underdeveloped (3T) regions.

“We want to ensure that location is not a barrier to learning so that even people in remote areas can access quality education,” added Professor Emilia.

Additionally, UGM, through its Agro-Technology Innovation Center (PIAT) in Kulon Progo, is ready to develop technology to support the agriculture, livestock, and fisheries sectors.

UGM also expressed its readiness to collaborate with Cenderawasih University in Papua to empower local communities through research and technology.

“We see great potential to develop transmigration areas by utilizing innovative research and technology,” said Professor Emilia.

Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaiman Suryanagara highlighted the challenges in the transmigration program, particularly the mismatch between the skills of transmigrant residents and the needs in the new regions.

“Transmigration is not just about relocating people, but about creating synergy between newcomers and residents. Our focus must be on improving human resource quality and area management so that transmigration becomes more productive and sustainable,” he explained.

The minister stressed the importance of cross-sector collaboration, including with non-state budget partners.

“We cannot rely solely on the state budget. There must be collaboration with private sector partners and international institutions to accelerate industrialization and economic growth in transmigration areas,” he said.

During the discussion, both parties agreed to explore a new transmigration paradigm oriented toward relocating people and creating inclusion and cultural diplomacy.

“We must build productive transmigration areas that serve as centers of cultural exchange between newcomers and local residents. This way, we foster collaboration that drives the region forward, not competition,” added Minister Suryanagara.

The meeting concluded with UGM’s commitment to continue designing holistic research assistance and transmigration area development programs.

“We believe that this collaboration will bring great benefits, not only for the people in transmigration areas but also for national economic growth as a whole,” concluded Professor Emilia.

This meeting marks a strategic step in building independent, inclusive, and sustainable transmigration areas while reaffirming the role of universities in supporting national development.

Semar UGM, one of UGM’s most innovative flagship vehicles, is preparing to debut in the 2025 Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East, which will be held at Lusail Circuit, Qatar, from Feb. 8 to 12.

Shell Eco-Marathon is a prestigious competition that showcases energy-efficient vehicles that push the boundaries of innovation.

This year marks a new chapter after five consecutive years of the competition being held in Indonesia, specifically at the Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Hans Tobias Sihombing, the General Manager of Semar UGM, stated that the Semar UGM team is presenting two of its best vehicles to compete with energy-efficient innovations from numerous international student teams.

These vehicles are the Semar Urban Hydroz 1.2, powered by hydrogen fuel, and the Semar Proto 4.0, which uses electricity as its primary energy source.

“We aim to bring a grand vision to promote sustainability innovation through this international competition,” Sihombing said in a statement to reporters on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Sihombing noted that Semar UGM achieved various outstanding accomplishments in previous competitions, such as first place in the Urban Hydrogen Fuel Category, first place in the Prototype Electric Category with a record of 938 km/kWh, first place in the Off-track Data and Telemetry Category, and third place in the Regional Championship.

“Semar UGM’s achievements in previous years demonstrate the team’s dominance and competence as one of the best in the field of energy-efficient vehicles,” he explained.

Semar UGM’s path to victory was not easy. Great sacrifices had to be made, such as missing final exams, which they had to retake after the competition.

The team faced tremendous pressure during the competition due to a critical issue. The Semar Proto 4.0 failed the technical inspection until the second day, leaving no opportunity for Semar Proto to practice on the track.

However, through intense discussions, collaboration, and unwavering determination, Semar Proto 4.0 ultimately claimed 1st place in its category.

“This experience was a nerve-wracking moment that demonstrated the team’s resilience, dedication, and determination to achieve the best and emerge as champions,” he recalled.

Semar UGM is determined to continue this spirit of innovation as it brings its environmentally friendly vehicle designs closer to implementation on the road. The journey toward this achievement is not done alone.

Semar UGM is proud to receive support from various partners committed to sustainability, such as PT Petrokimia Gresik, Pos Properti Indonesia, Jericho, PLN, Toyota Astra Motor, Citra Jelajah Informatika, Wefreight, Inalum, Pebsteel, Dharma Precision Parts, and Air Liquide.

Semar UGM is also continuously open to collaborations with new partners who share the same vision: to create beneficial and sustainable innovations and creations for the world.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has received a donation from the Directorate of Traffic of the Yogyakarta Regional Police (Polda DIY), a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer.

This vehicle will be used by UGM’s Office of Occupational Safety, Security, Emergency, and Environment (K5L) for routine patrol activities around the campus.

This donation agreement is part of a collaboration aimed at ensuring security in the Yogyakarta region.

Representatives from Polda DIY, led by Police Commissioner Alfian Nurrizal, attended the meeting, which UGM Secretary Dr. Andi Sandi Antonius Tabusassa Tonralipu received.

Commissioner Nurrizal expressed his hope that the donation would be useful and help strengthen the relationship between Polda DIY and UGM’s security unit.

“We are very pleased to establish cooperation with the university, particularly in creating a collaborative approach to security,” he said on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, at UGM’s Central Office.

Dr. Tonralipu conveyed his appreciation for the donation from Polda DIY, which represents a collaborative effort to maintain campus security.

“We are grateful not only for this donation but also for the cooperation established over time,” he said.

He added that security issues at the university involve various factors, many of which are beyond UGM’s jurisdiction.

He explained that UGM is committed to creating a violence-free campus.

Through UGM’s Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence (PPKS), established in 2023, the university strives to ensure a safe environment for the entire academic community.

“For example, in cases of sexual violence, we’ve received reports where the victims are from UGM, but the perpetrators are not. This is, of course, beyond our jurisdiction,” he explained.

The collaboration with Polda DIY is expected to help address cases of sexual violence more openly and effectively to ensure legal protection for victims of sexual violence.

Additionally, Dr. Tonralipu highlighted the high mobility of international students at UGM who are not yet skilled in riding two-wheeled vehicles.

He suggested that one form of collaboration could be a brief training program for international students on how to operate two-wheelers at UGM, which would protect UGM students and ensure traffic safety on campus.

“UGM receives many international students who are often not trained to use two-wheelers. We hope this can be addressed through collaboration with Polda DIY,” he added.

As an educational institution, Dr. Tonralipu emphasized that UGM is responsible for not only providing the best education to the public but also ensuring security and safety within the campus environment.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the latest technology that cannot be separated from modern life. Researchers are racing to create AI that can assist humans in all fields.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has partnered with UGM to invite the public to learn about artificial intelligence technology and improve digital literacy.

The Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, stated that her ministry is partnering with universities like UGM to prepare the younger generation to lead in artificial intelligence technology.

According to her, universities are the right extension between the ministry and the public to increase digital literacy in the country.

“To welcome technological advancements, especially AI, Indonesia still needs 9 million digital talents by 2030,” she told reporters on the sidelines of her visit to the event titled “Komdigi Menjangkau: Campus, We’re Coming!”, which was held by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Microsoft at the Grha Sabha Pramana on Wednesday (Dec. 11).

In addition to discussions, a job fair was held simultaneously with various Indonesian digital companies, including OVO and Digitalent.

Minister Hafid emphasized that digital technology companies have also committed to developing Indonesian human resources in digital technology.

“We encourage large global technology companies to be involved so that Indonesia not only acts as a consumer but also produces competent human resources,” said the minister.

Although AI is touted as a companion or assistant to humans, there are still challenges to face. The Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, revealed that AI is not yet fully optimal, so negligence and errors often occur.

One example is the emergence of AI technology that is trained to be biased and discriminatory towards certain races and religions. In addition, weak privacy security and minimal supervision are problems that must be addressed immediately.

According to him, the use of AI must have trustworthy governance principles that protect against all risks. Therefore, security, inclusion, and responsibility must be upheld.

He also advised that even though AI is already and will continue to be increasingly widespread, technological ethics must still be upheld.

“Master AI, don’t let AI master us,” said the deputy minister.

In line with the deputy minister, Panji Wasmana, the Director of the National Technology Officer of Microsoft Indonesia, said that critical thinking skills must accompany the use of AI.

Often, people swallow raw information provided by AI without checking its accuracy. Strengthening students’ ethics and basic values is needed so that AI does not drive humans.

“We must be the pilots, let AI be the co-pilots,” he concluded.

Director of RSA UGM, Dr. Darwito, emphasized that this collaboration is a tangible effort by RSA UGM to provide top-quality healthcare and achieve type-A hospital status by 2025.

“RSA UGM has come a long way, from its origins as an emergency clinic during the Merapi eruption to becoming a nationally recognized teaching hospital. With the launch of robotic orthopedic services, we are optimistic about achieving 1,000 surgeries per month, supported by our 202 top medical professionals,” he explained on Monday (Dec. 9) at Grha Sabha Pramana.

Dr. Darwito highlighted the importance of cross-faculty collaboration at UGM to optimize RSA UGM’s services.

“RSA UGM is an integral part of UGM that will continue synergizing with faculties to enhance public health and well-being. Let us support this significant milestone together,” he stated.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia underscored RSA UGM’s role as a teaching hospital that addresses challenges in research and innovation.

Similar to leading hospitals abroad that closely collaborate with their universities, RSA UGM is envisioned to become a true model of a teaching hospital in Indonesia.

“We are addressing today’s healthcare needs and paving the way for the future through in-depth research and innovation,” said Rector Emilia.

The launch of this service marks a strategic step for RSA UGM to establish itself as a center of excellence in healthcare, particularly in oncology, cardiology, stroke care, maternal and child health, and health tourism.

Supported by state-of-the-art facilities such as hemodialysis centers, neurosurgery, and orthopedics, the robotic orthopedic services offer high precision in bone surgery, reduce the risk of errors, and accelerate patient recovery.

This technology is expected to provide effective solutions for complex cases such as bone trauma, joint replacement, and structural abnormalities.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and the Expertise Body of the Indonesian House of Representatives (BK DPR RI) have agreed to collaborate to implement the tri-dharma of higher education and provide expertise to support the DPR RI’s tasks and functions.

The BK DPR RI is disseminating Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP), which has been revised and will take effect in January 2026.

This collaboration also extends the partnerships established between BK DPR RI and UGM’s Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics and Business, and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences since 2017.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), conducted by UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia and the Head of BK DPR RI Dr. Inosentius Samsul on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, at UGM’s Central Office, was followed by a focus group discussion (FGD).

The FGD, themed “Reforming Criminal Law in Indonesia: Welcoming the Implementation of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code,” aimed to disseminate the 2023 Criminal Code to serve as a guideline, especially for law enforcement officers such as investigators, prosecutors, lawyers, judges, and society in general, in anticipation of the implementation of the 2023 KUHP.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia warmly welcomed the renewal of collaboration between the two institutions.

She expressed hope that this partnership would optimize the potential of both parties, ensuring that the synergy generated would bring broader benefits to the nation and Indonesian society.

“We also have a strong alumni network that I believe can accelerate and expand the dissemination of the 2023 KUHP materials discussed today,” Rector Emilia stated.

She emphasized that disseminating Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code is not only for academic and political interests but also for realizing justice, legal certainty, and societal benefits.

“Hopefully, the signing of the MoU, followed by the FGD session on the implementation of the Criminal Code, will yield impactful results for all of us,” she concluded.

In his remarks, the head of BK DPR RI, Dr. Inosentius Samsul, stated that this collaboration is part of developing strategic partnerships to provide substantive support, which is the main task of BK DPR RI.

“Our tagline is bridging the research to the roles and functions of parliament; we want to connect academic research activities to the political realm, so we greatly need UGM’s support,” he explained.

Dr. Samsul further explained the importance of holding the FGD now, as it marks the final stages before implementing Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code.

The process includes revisions to avoid misinterpretations.

“There’s a lot of preparation needed, and with only one year left, we hope to finalize everything before Jan. 1, 2026. These improvements will serve as input to the Legislative Body and Commission III of the DPR,” he concluded.

After the MoU signing, the FGD was conducted with four speakers discussing various aspects of the 2023 KUHP. Professor Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, a criminal law professor at the University of Indonesia, elaborated on the new paradigm of crime and punishment in the 2023 KUHP.

She highlighted the need to address overcrowding in correctional facilities through changes in sentencing rules.

Sentences and measures should differ for adults, children, and corporations.

“Remember, punishment is not meant to degrade or demean human dignity, so when there’s a conflict between law and justice, justice must take precedence,” she explained.

Dr. Jufrina Rizal, an academic from the University of Indonesia, discussed preparing regulations and implementing “living law” in the new Criminal Code. She emphasized that a legal provision could only be considered “living law” if it is scientifically proven to be practiced in society.

“Local law enforcement should not incorporate provisions into regional regulations without scientific evidence. Criminal resolution must adopt restorative justice, involving perpetrators, victims, families, traditional leaders, and stakeholders,” Dr. Rizal stated.

Meanwhile, Dr. Yenti Garnasih, an expert in money laundering law, explained the concept of corporate crime and liability in the 2023 KUHP.

She agreed that punishment types must differ for individuals and corporations.

Additional sanctions for corporations may include restitution, corrective actions, fulfillment of neglected obligations, confiscation of criminally obtained goods, and, in extreme cases, corporate dissolution.

“The 2023 KUHP addresses corporate crime specifically in Chapter 27, covering offenses such as fraud against creditors, corruption, and money laundering,” stated Dr. Garnasih, Indonesia’s first doctor of money laundering law.

Before the discussion session, UGM criminal law professor Edwar Omar Sharif Hiariej, currently serving as Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights, discussed transforming advocates’ and society’s roles in implementing the 2023 KUHP.

He highlighted that the new Criminal Code offers advocates opportunities to focus on restoration and human rights protection rather than solely on punishment.

“The KUHP introduces significant reforms across many areas, from cybercrime regulations to restorative justice approaches, aligning the law with modern times,” he added.

From the FGD, BK DPR RI expressed hope that the event would produce a policy paper in the form of proceedings containing materials presented by the speakers.

This would ensure the necessary revisions to the 2023 KUHP are completed before its enforcement on Jan. 1, 2026.
