Approximately 270 UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM) students will be deployed to nine transmigration areas in Indonesia.

These locations are Lunang Silaut in Pesisir Regency, West Sumatra; Batu Ketumpang in South Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung; Lagita in North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu; and Rasau Jaya in Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan.

Other locations include Cahaya Baru in Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan; Telang in Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra; Tobadak in Central Mamuju Regency, Southeast Sulawesi; Lamunti Dadahup in Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan; and Mutiara in Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi.

Dr. Rustamadji, UGM Director of Community Service, stated that KKN-PPM students will deploy mid-year alongside thousands of other students across Indonesia. The presence of KKN-PPM students in transmigration areas is expected to enhance the skills of transmigrants in managing local resources.

“We hope our KKN-PPM students can drive economic growth and promote the production of flagship products, not just in agriculture but also in other sectors,” Dr. Rustamadji said after signing a contract agreement between the UGM Directorate of Community Service and the Directorate of Transmigration Area Development, Ministry of Village, for the 2024 Thematic Transmigration KKN-PPM program on Friday (May 31).

Dr. Rustamadji noted that this deployment results from the collaboration between UGM and the Ministry of Village. He believes this synergistic partnership can benefit transmigrants and improve their well-being.

“I think this synergy can benefit both parties and become a legacy in advancing and developing transmigration areas,” he said.

Sigit Mustofa Nurudin, Secretary of the Directorate General for Development of Transmigration Areas at the Ministry of Village, stated that the deployment of UGM KKN-PPM students can support and encourage the regeneration of farmers in transmigration areas, turning these areas into local growth centers.

“Currently, the enthusiasm for becoming a farmer is very low, and we need to improve the community’s mindset regarding this profession, showing that it can be promising and attractive to the youth, depending on how we can enhance its appeal,” Nurudin explained.

Nurudin hopes that KKN-PPM students can enhance the potential of transmigrants to manage local resources better, thereby increasing their income and overall welfare.

He mentioned that the ministry can only send around 200 families to transmigration areas yearly, far below the waiting list of 5,700 families. This starkly contrasts 25-30 years ago, when the government could send 50,000 to 100,000 families.

“The transmigration budget used to reach Rp 5 trillion, but now the ministry’s budget is Rp 2.7 trillion, with only Rp 200 billion allocated for transmigration,” he explained.

Despite having strong laws and regulations regarding transmigration, Nurudin stated that they cannot rely solely on state budget funds (APBN). Moving forward, they plan to collaborate with businesses and private companies to support the development of transmigration areas.

The Director of the Directorate of Community Service (DPkM) at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Dr. Rustamadji, has been awarded the Transmigration Award from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration in the category of Motivator for Empowering Communities in Transmigration Areas through the thematic Community Service Program (KKN) in transmigration.

Minister Abdul Halim Iskandar gave the award presentation directly during the Transmigration Coordination Meeting 2024, entitled ‘Completing the Targets of the 2020-2024 RPJM Program, Realizing Self-Reliant and Competitive Transmigration Areas,’ held in Makassar on Monday (May 6).

Dr. Rustamadji stated that this award recognizes UGM’s contribution to supporting the transmigration program by deploying KKN students to carry out thematic programs in transmigration areas.

“We have collaborated with the Directorate General of Transmigration Development by sending KKN students to transmigration areas to support sustainable development and make transmigration areas more self-reliant,” said the director in his statement to reporters on Wednesday (May 15).

According to Dr. Rustamadji, receiving this award from the ministry is expected to motivate the DPkM team to continue making improvements and generating new innovations in the deployment program of UGM’s KKN students in various corners of transmigration areas in Indonesia.

“We want the presence of students to inspire transmigrants and empower transmigrant communities in managing resources through the knowledge and technology they acquire from the campus,” he said.

Dr. Rustamadji mentioned that in 2023, UGM sent KKN student teams to six locations in six provinces, namely in Enggano District, North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province; Randangan District, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo Province; Sungai Kakap District, Kubu Raya Regency, West Kalimantan; Kapuas Murung District, Kapuas Regency, Central Kalimantan Province; Maligano District, Muna Regency, Southeast Sulawesi Province; and Sambelia District, East Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara.

The thematic work program by KKN students includes programs for economic empowerment, food security, and cultural preservation. Furthermore, there are programs for community empowerment based on small businesses, poverty reduction and stunting prevention, optimization of local resources, and empowering women in increasing community economy. Additionally, there are programs for applying integrated agricultural systems and optimizing resources for economic development in transmigration areas.

The UGM Faculty of Geography’s Center for Environmental Studies and Disaster Mitigation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration, organized the 5th Technical Guidance on Transmigration Area Development.

The event took place in Yogyakarta and was held in two batches, June 5th to June 8th, 2023, and June 12th to June 15th, 2023. This year, it explored the Concept of Transpolitan in Transmigration Area Development.

A total of 50 participants attended both batches, with the majority being central government officials from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration and transmigration officials from across Indonesia.

The speakers for this technical guidance series were lecturers from various faculties at UGM, including the Faculty of Geography, Faculty of Economics and Business, and Faculty of Agricultural Technology.

The ministry’s Director General of Transmigration Area Development, Danton Ginting Munthe, opened the event with the company of the Secretary to the Director General of Transmigration Area Development, Dr. Sigit Mustofa Nurudin, and the Head of the Center for Environmental Studies and Disaster Mitigation, Professor Suratman.

In his address, the Director General expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the UGM speakers for their joint contribution to comprehensively understanding the concept of transpolitan. During the discussion, he emphasized that the key to building a transpolitan lies in first maximizing the quality of human resources, which Professor Suratman echoed.

According to Professor Suratman, a modern integrated transmigration area (transpolitan) is a region that has excellent, innovative, and creative transmigrant human resources in collectively managing natural resources. All efforts are made to realize innovative flagship products and establish the region’s branding with the support of Pentahelix collaboration.

Dean of the Faculty of Geography, Dr. Danang Sri Hadmoko, emphasized during the event’s closing that executive training for echelon 2 officials and the transpolitan transmigration program should continue, and academics must synergize with the government to continue existing programs.
