Robots, combined with microcontroller components and sensors, are typically made from steel, aluminum, rubber, plastic, or cardboard.

However, in this case, a team from the UGM Faculty of Biology and the University of Edinburgh created a robot using the real skeleton of a monitor lizard.

This collaboration resulted in a necrobot monitor lizard capable of simple movements, serving as a learning tool in animal systematics.

This technology integrates science and engineering through cooperation between the two universities.

Dr. Eko Agus Suyono, a lecturer at Biology UGM, and Dr. Parvez Alam, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, initiated the research in September last year.

The idea began when Dr. Alam invited Leo Foulds and Nadia Ditta, two of his master’s degree students from the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, to come and work at the Animal Systematics Laboratory, Biology UGM, to study reptile skeletons, particularly those of monitor lizards and snakes.

“At that time, Biology lecturer Donan Satria Yudha provided information on the movement, taxonomy, and anatomy of reptiles in Indonesia,” Dr. Suyono explained in a statement to reporters on Friday (Feb. 7).

He said that during the first two weeks, the two teams divided tasks, with Dr. Alam recording the movements of live adult monitor lizards while walking.

Then, both teams studied the mechanics of the monitor lizard’s bones and performed a CT scan of the skeleton to create a mold of it.

“This skeleton mold would later be fitted with the robot machinery upon returning to Edinburgh,” he added.

In mid-January 2025, Dr. Alam contacted Dr. Suyono and Yudha to share a video showing the mold of the monitor lizard skeleton walking after being equipped with necrobot machinery.

At the end of January 2025, Alam returned to the Faculty of Biology UGM to install the robot machinery onto the actual monitor lizard skeleton.

“During the assembly of the robot machinery onto the monitor lizard skeleton, Yudha was assisted by Frans from the Museum of Biology and several students,” Dr. Suyono said.

The assembly process involved Yudha, a lecturer from the Animal Systematics Laboratory, working with FX Sugiyo Pranoto from the UGM Museum of Biology, and several students, including Rashif Naufal Andika, Ananto Puradi Nainggolan, Maula Haqul Dafa, Arkanniti Dibyawedha Adisajjana, and Afif Fatah Rizki.

Assembling the robot machinery onto the actual monitor lizard skeleton, according to Dr. Suyono, was not easy.

Dr. Alam completed it in three days, successfully creating a necrobot monitor lizard capable of simple movements.

This result was very satisfying, considering the materials, composition, and structure differences between the mold and the actual bones.

Dr. Alam later donated the necrobot monitor lizard to the Animal Systematics Laboratory, Biology UGM, as a new learning tool for lecturers and students.

“For the Faculty of Biology, the process of studying and assembling necrobots from a monitor lizard skeleton provides new knowledge,” he concluded.

Goats and other small ruminants are considered ideal livestock for coping with various environmental stresses.

Goats are also resilient to high temperatures and drought. With these advantages, goats are predicted to become a sustainable source of food security, economically viable, and adaptive to climate change in the future.

According to the 2018 FAO report, when the population of other livestock decreases, the goat population is expected to surpass that of sheep.

As of 2023, goats are the most productive livestock in Indonesia, with a population of 19.398 million, compared to cattle, which number 18.6 million.

Professor Kustantinah of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science believes that Indonesia’s abundant natural resources will increase the goat population by 3.2% annually and further.

“The development of livestock throughout Indonesia can be done in suitable environments by empowering existing universities,” she said Friday (Feb. 7).

The Head of the Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed at Animal Science UGM mentioned that Indonesia currently has around 59 faculties of animal science.

With collaboration, livestock development is expected to be easier to implement.

To boost meat production, meat-type goats, such as Bligon, Kacang, and Marica goats, should be developed.

“The demand for meat-type goats is quite high, especially during Eid al-Adha (sacrificial feast), and even for export purposes, the potential remains wide open,” she explained.

She also advocated for a Livestock Development Plan involving higher education institutions every five years, or REPELITA, to increase the goat population in Indonesia.

At Animal Science UGM, Professor Kustantinah mentioned several goat development activities have been conducted by staff from the Laboratory of Animal Feed Science in collaboration with other laboratories within the Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed.

One such initiative is a community service program in a foster village in Nyemani Hamlet, Sidoharjo Village, Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency.

“The development of goat farming there is mostly managed by women’s farmer groups (KWT), as seen in Gunungkidul, Kulon Progo, and Sleman,” she concluded.

Amanda Divanty, a Management student at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) class of 2022, has become one of the students who successfully balanced her studies while managing six businesses.

Her entrepreneurial journey began with Porto Photo (@portophoto.id), a self-photo studio and photobooth service offering affordable, high-quality photos, which she co-founded with two fellow students from the same program.

“Porto Studio has an offline studio in Pogung, and it seems to have opened doors for me to venture into the food and beverage business,” the student said during a conversation at FEB UGM on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

Driven by her ambition, Amanda, as she is commonly called, soon expanded into the culinary business by launching Cherries Bites (@cheeries.bites), which sells brownies, chiffon cakes, and creamy sago online.

She later opened Paspa (@paspa.yk), a pasta and Zuppa shop in Condongcatur. In the same area, she launched Mentaikudimsum (@mentaikudimsum), a restaurant specializing in mental dim sum.

Amanda was thrilled to receive a grant to manage EB Café, specifically Milkymoo, a business selling milk products, ice cream, and egg waffles.

“This will soon operate at the EB Canteen, alongside Pisang Saji, which we launched in front of UNY’s Sports Hall at the end of January 2025,” she explained.

Reflecting on her success in managing six businesses at a young age, Amanda shared that her motivation for entrepreneurship stemmed from her childhood experiences watching her parents run a food and beverage business.

Since elementary school, Amanda had been trying her hand at selling various items, from stationery to slime and frozen food.

“What started as experimenting gradually became a habit. I found it enjoyable and productive to spend my free time doing something that generates income,” Amanda said.

Amanda attributes her success to teamwork and choosing the right business partners.

“Having the right team allows you to learn many things. If I hadn’t met my current partners, I might not have come this far,” she added.

She also expressed gratitude for her talent and ability to juggle both studies and business at a young age.

Known for her determination and perseverance, Amanda always strives to do her best and keep learning.

Like other successful students, Amanda revealed that managing her time between lectures and business was key.

She uses a detailed to-do list and prioritizes tasks accordingly.

“I try to create a detailed to-do list and tackle everything based on priority,” she explained.

Amanda is thankful for the immense support she has received from her family, close friends, and the FEB UGM academic environment.

Her friends at FEB UGM describe her as highly supportive and hardworking.

Amanda credits several courses for contributing to her business success, especially those related to marketing and operations.

“At first, I thought entrepreneurship was just about making products and selling them, but after studying at FEB UGM, I realized there are many other aspects, like human resource management, finance, and marketing, that are essential for building brand awareness,” she shared.

Looking ahead, Amanda plans to continue growing her businesses.

Despite challenges and uncertainties, she feels content with her current path.

“Through entrepreneurship, I feel I can contribute and provide job opportunities for others,” she said.

For students aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Amanda advises not to hesitate and to keep trying.

She recommends starting by gathering as much information as possible about the business they want to pursue.

“Remember, perfection doesn’t have to be achieved on the first step. Keep learning and improving over time. Don’t worry about what others say. If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” Amanda concluded.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to show its commitment to promoting Indonesia’s participation on the global stage.

This is exemplified by the achievements of two of its alumni, Gerry Utama and Dr. Nugroho Imam Setiawan, who successfully explored Antarctica for international research missions.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia praised the two researchers’ accomplishments during a meeting on Monday (Feb. 2).

She believes that the work of Dr. Nugroho and Gerry, as they are commonly called, will motivate other scientists in Indonesia.

Professor Emilia stated that their success proves that Indonesia, particularly UGM, possesses human resources that are on par with those of other developed nations. She promised to encourage UGM’s involvement in further research and policies related to Antarctica.

“Research is always dynamic. I think there will be a need for a laboratory or an Antarctic Study Center that we can develop because there’s great potential in this field. If we can contribute positively to the nation and the world, UGM will support it,” said Professor Emilia.

Regarding the Antarctic Treaty System, which 58 countries have signed, Professor Emilia acknowledged that much coordination is still required with the Indonesian government officials.

The Antarctic Treaty is an important instrument for a country to actively participate in extensive exploration of Antarctica.

Although Indonesia has yet to declare its readiness to sign the Antarctic Treaty, Professor Emilia stated that UGM is always prepared to support the process.

“We need to speak directly with the government, and we will present the good points, what UGM has already done, and what needs to be prepared,” explained the rector.

Professor Emilia highlighted that UGM’s commitment to the Antarctic Treaty is part of the university’s effort to continuously contribute to global research that directly impacts environmental sustainability and climate change.

By supporting the participation of Indonesian students and researchers in international scientific expeditions, UGM plays a crucial role in strengthening Indonesia’s position in managing the Antarctic region.

“We want to raise awareness about the importance of Antarctica as an area that requires serious attention from the entire international community,” she concluded.

Gerry, an alumnus of UGM’s Faculty of Geography, became the first Indonesian and ASEAN citizen to participate in the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) from February to July 2024 while pursuing his Master’s in Paleogeography at Saint Petersburg State University, Russia.

During the expedition, Gerry researched geomorphology and paleogeography to reconstruct a new atlas of Russia’s King George Island. Gerry’s research is particularly significant in the context of global climate change, which is currently a major concern worldwide.

“Aside from wood fossils, I also mapped moss with varying colors. This serves as an important indicator in understanding the climate dynamics in Antarctica and the world,” he emphasized.

Gerry (31), who became the youngest researcher in Indonesia’s mission to Antarctica, recounted that he and his team discovered a massive iceberg three days after the ship landed.

If reconstructed, the release of such a large iceberg from the ice sheet also indicates faster ice melt, which could disrupt the balance of marine ecosystems and pose greater threats to coastal habitats.

“Indonesia should be more aware of this phenomenon since our country is largely composed of seas. Therefore, signing the Antarctic Treaty should be a priority,” he added.

Dr. Nugroho Imam Setiawan (43), a lecturer from the Department of Geological Engineering at the UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM), participated in the Japan Antarctic Research Expedition (JARE) from 2016 to 2017.

During the expedition, he conducted research on the evolution of the Antarctic continent through the petrology study of methanol rocks, which are aged between 2.5 billion and 500 million years.

Dr. Nugroho successfully published seven international journals from his Antarctic mission, contributing to the global development of geological studies.

Dr. Nugroho also brought home rock samples with a honeycomb structure, which he found in Antarctica, and has donated them to the UGM Biology Museum and the Bandung Geological Museum.

The first Indonesian geologist to research the Antarctic continent explained that Antarctica is a terra incognita, or land largely unknown to humans, so the research conducted there will undoubtedly provide important insights, especially in earth sciences.

Echoing Gerry, Dr. Nugroho hopes the Indonesian government will pay more attention to natural phenomena occurring in Antarctica.

“We must remember that Indonesia and Antarctica are not separate; we share the same summit ground. So, I believe it’s quite important for Indonesia to get involved in strategic issues like geopolitics and climate change to prepare for potential future scenarios,” he emphasized.

The Special Region of Yogyakarta is one of the most popular tourist destinations, attracting more visitors than Bali, Lombok, and other regions. To boost its appeal to tourists, Yogyakarta has established 25 tourism villages, which are expected to offer alternative destinations for visitors to enjoy culture-based tourism.

Dr. Destha Titi Raharjana, a researcher at the UGM Center for Tourism Studies (Puspar), stated that the Terban area has the potential to develop a culture-based tourism village.

He believes that Cik Di Tiro Street, connected to the Kota Baru area, could serve as an interesting storyline for a tourism package.

“By exploring the historical potential, we can create opportunities and add value to tourism,” he said in a statement sent to journalists on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025.

Dr. Raharjana is optimistic about Terban’s development as a historical tourism area, especially after its designation as a Cultural Village, which could strengthen the area’s cultural identity.

He mentioned that Terban still preserves various cultural traditions, such as Ruwahan, Rejeban, Saparan, and Merti Belik, all of which should be identified and packaged as cultural products for Terban event calendars.

Husni Eko Prabowo, Head of the Tourism Resource Development Department at Yogyakarta City Government, said his office is supporting the development of tourism resources in Terban.

There is currently only one tourism village in Baciro in the Gondokusuman District. He is committed to facilitating public ideas for tourism development.

“Our priority is adding more tourism villages and strengthening local commitment. After the village is established, what happens next? We know Terban already has a tourism awareness group (pokdarwis). Let’s work with pokdarwis to encourage the development of local champions to seriously promote Terban as a tourism village,” he explained.

Diandra, a UGM Community Service Unit YO-175 team member, is leading a program called ‘Terban Sadar Wisata: Independent Tourism Development for the Village.’

She explained that the team is working to support the development of tourism based on the creative economy.

“Terban has various historical potentials that should be explored and introduced to the current generation,” she said.

To boost tourism development, Diandra mentioned that the KKN students successfully compiled a tourism profile book to serve as a reference for developing tourism potential.

“We hope that what we’ve done can serve as a foundation for further tourism development in Terban, including strengthening the collaborative institutions already in place,” she added.

Diandra hopes that the programs executed by the KKN students will continue through community initiatives and be further developed by future KKN teams.

Terban Village Head, Sigit Kusuma Atmaja, highlighted several historical buildings in Terban.

According to him, these buildings have interesting historical stories.

One example is the Police Post Office located north of Gramedia, which was once the headquarters of the Indonesian Army.

“This former Haji Salim’s house is now a Bumbu Desa restaurant,” he explained.

He mentioned that he had received a visit from the Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff (KSAL), who was interested in the Navy’s history.

According to some sources, the Navy’s headquarters was once located in Terban.

The Galuh Hotel, located east of SMA 9, was a Navy hospital.

In 2024, Bappenas also conducted similar research, sending a team to study the origins of the National Economic Council.

“The Panti Rekso Putro building was once considered the birthplace of Bappenas. Dr. Yap’s eye hospital was one of the most advanced eye hospitals and a reference for eye treatment from various regions, including overseas,” Atmaja said.

He added that the people of Terban have mapped out various strategic plans for developing tourism in the area, including educational-based tourism that showcases Terban’s rich historical heritage and digital promotion of culinary tourism.

“We have a lot of potential. Not only for developing tourist attractions, but Terban also has many young people who have had the opportunity to intern in hospitality, which helps improve skills within the community,” he concluded.

Several professors from Universitas Gadjah Mada participated in the Academic Leadership Training on Innovative Transformation for University Development and Empowerment (The Altitude) on Friday (Jan. 31) at the UGM Senate Hall.

This leadership training, aimed at professors from various national universities, focuses on enhancing the commitment to dignified and innovative education.

Since last year, The Altitude has been joined by over 50 professors from Indonesia to improve leadership capacity in a Training of Trainers (ToT) format.

This year’s session focused on leadership and collaborative innovation in industry and technology. The UGM Professors’ Board (DGB UGM) provides a platform for professors to share knowledge and transform students.

Chair of DGB UGM, Professor Muhammad Baiquni, stated that The Altitude is a significant step for UGM and national universities in contributing to human, economic, and national development.

The meeting also strengthens the position of professors as the highest academic rank.

“Hopefully, the innovations and dedication of professors will pave the way for scientific advancements,” Professor Baiquni said.

He emphasized the importance of leadership based on the concept of “Astha Brata,” meaning “Earthbound Leadership,” which involves resilience, courage, and balance.

“We need to be resilient and courageous while maintaining balance and providing guidance,” he explained.

Regarding innovation development, Professor Sang Kompiang Wirawan, Secretary of the Directorate of Business Development at UGM, mentioned that UGM promotes transformation and innovation by building a teaching, research, and socio-entrepreneurial university.

These are realized through the Science Technopark program initiated by UGM in 2018.

“We aim to focus on environmental and social issues,” Professor Wirawan said.

He emphasized that innovation should develop organically, not solely for profit. Initially, the Science Technopark had no dedicated location, but it had a strong concept, which was later realized in the UGM Innovation and Creativity Hub (GIK UGM), further strengthening UGM’s commitment.

The KKN-PPM team from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with the KKN team from Muhammadiyah University of Buton (UMB), Southeast Sulawesi, carried out a project to build environmental resilience in the coastal areas of Terapung Village, Mawasangka District, Central Buton Regency.

The project involved planting mangroves with the participation of the local community on Sunday (Jan. 26).

The mangrove planting initiative, part of efforts to address the impacts of climate change, was attended by Arman, a local figure from Terapung Village known as a researcher and botanist.

Both students and the community eagerly anticipated his presence as he provided direct support and technical guidance.

“Of course, his presence is to guide us in the mangrove planting process, making it more effective and sustainable,” said Fauzan Aldi, a member of the UGM team from the Agrocomplex cluster.

Aldi explained that the UGM Agrocomplex team’s observations revealed that the mangrove condition along the coast of Terapung Village faces serious challenges and is at risk of environmental degradation.

Although various parties have carried out mangrove planting before, many plants have not survived.

“Many plants failed to survive due to improper methods, such as polybags being left in the plants. This caused many mangroves to fail to grow and become damaged,” Aldi explained.

For this activity, the UGM student team used a more planned approach to replace damaged mangroves and add new seedlings. The aim was to restore the coastal ecosystem and protect the area from abrasion.

This activity also aimed to raise environmental awareness among residents, particularly the younger generation.

Children from Terapung Village who participated in the mangrove planting activity received direct education on the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems for the future.

“We ensured that all seedlings were planted without polybags, and the planting areas were adjusted to the characteristics of the local coastal environment,” said Aldi.

Arman appreciated the efforts of the UGM students and thanked the UMB team for joining this activity.

“This initiative will leave a lasting legacy. Five to ten years from now, the mangroves planted today will become a habitat for various marine life in Terapung Village,” said Arman.

With great optimism, Arman hopes that the mangrove planting activity will be the first step in building a community-based environmental resilience system in Terapung Village.

He also hopes that this approach can serve as a model to be implemented in other coastal areas.
