A total of 16 Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students have been awarded scholarships from the Mitsubishi UFJ Foundation, Japan. The symbolic handover ceremony occurred at UGM’s Central Building on Tuesday (Dec. 10).

Takashi Oyamada, Head of the Mitsubishi UFJ Foundation, expressed his pride in granting the scholarships to UGM students. He highlighted that UGM is the first university in Indonesia to collaborate with the foundation.

“We are proud to provide scholarships to students from this prestigious university,” he said.

Dr. Andi Sandi, UGM’s Secretary, warmly welcomed the Mitsubishi Japan delegation and appreciated the well-established collaboration.

“I hope this partnership continues to flourish and provides greater benefits and opportunities for our students,” he stated.

Oyamada handed certificates and scholarships directly to all recipients. Most scholarship awardees are from the Accounting, Management, and Economics programs of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM), the Law program of the Faculty of Law (FH UGM), and the Japanese Language and Culture program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM).

The 16 recipients were granted scholarships worth IDR 5 million for one year.

Michelle Anastasia, a scholarship recipient from the Japanese Language and Culture program Class of 2022, delivered a speech in Japanese expressing her gratitude.

“All students here have dreams they want to achieve. However, some are forced to take alternative paths due to financial difficulties,” she said.

She continued, “I am very grateful to receive this scholarship, which allows me to continue my studies. We will do our utmost to achieve our dreams,” she promised.

Ninety-nine runners participated in the UGM Ultra Charity Run, held on Dec. 14-15 in Yogyakarta.

This charity run, organized to celebrate UGM’s 75th anniversary, featured four categories: a 75-kilometer run with 11 participants, a 45-kilometer run with 9 participants, a 30-kilometer run with 19 participants, a 15-kilometer run with 52 participants, and a 5-kilometer run with 37 participants.

Among all participants, around 80 alumni took part in this event.

The Chairperson of the UGM Ultra Charity Run 75K Committee, Arif Purwoko, stated that the charity run was not only a race for speed but also a platform for UGM’s academic community and alumni to contribute to the education of the younger generation.

“In addition to running, the main goal of this event is to raise donations for high-achieving but financially challenged students. We hope these scholarships can help them continue their studies at UGM,” Purwoko said on Sunday (Dec. 15).

The run started and finished at GIK UGM and circled around Yogyakarta.

By the end of the Nitilaku event, the amount raised reached IDR 183,749,469, and the donations will continue to increase until the closing date on Dec. 31, 2024. These donations will be distributed through the KAGAMA scholarship program.

The UGM Ultra Charity Run was not only a sporting event but also a gathering for UGM alumni. With a meeting point at GIK UGM, complete with angkringan facilities, the runners had the opportunity to share stories and strengthen their bonds of fraternity.

“This is my third time joining this event. I participated in the 73rd and 74th runs, and I hope this 75th one runs smoothly,” said Aci, an alumnus from the Faculty of Geography.

Following the successful organization of the UGM Ultra Charity Run 75K, the committee hopes this event can become an annual gathering, growing bigger and more festive each year. Additionally, they hope it will inspire more people to participate in social activities.

“We hope this event will continue and that more people will be motivated to donate and help others,” concluded Purwoko.

A total of 1,950 participants from 47 community groups enlivened the Nitilaku cultural parade on Sunday (Dec. 15) as part of Universitas Gadjah Mada’s 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum celebrations.

Representatives from UGM faculties, schools, alumni association (Kagama) chapters across regions, and various hobbyist communities participated in the festive event.

The participants wore traditional attire and vintage clothing and showcased creative displays, such as gunungan (offerings of crops), ogoh-ogoh (effigies), and animal-inspired ornaments.

The parade commenced at UGM Boulevard and concluded at the Balairung Hall, following the western side of the campus.

The Chair of Kagama Central Board, Basuki Hadimuljono, led the opening ceremony, accompanied by Dr. Arie Sujito, the UGM Vice Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni.

Adopting the theme, Nitilaku 2024 embodied the spirit of intergenerational collaboration and integration of various elements—UGM academics, cultural communities, the public and private sectors, and government institutions.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia stated that the Nitilaku parade has become a tradition to honor the historical journey of UGM at its Bulaksumur campus.

The cultural parade symbolizes a strategic bond between the palace, campus, and society.

“Nitilaku serves as a reminder for all academics and alumni of UGM’s mission to enlighten the nation while reaffirming UGM as a cultural university,” she said.

The rector also expressed gratitude and appreciation to alumni from various regions for their enthusiastic participation in the Kagama board’s initiative.

She hoped this event would strengthen ties so Kagama and society could collaborate to preserve local wisdom and maintain a harmonious relationship between the campus, the palace, and the broader community.

“It is a source of pride to see Kagama gathered here at UGM, demonstrating a lasting and genuine connection between alumni and their alma mater,” Professor Emilia concluded.

Basuki Hadimuljono highlighted that the Nitilaku 2024 parade reaffirms UGM’s identity as a university of struggle, the people, unity, culture, and Pancasila.

He emphasized their commitment to contributing to society under Kagama’s tagline guyub, rukun, migunani (togetherness, harmony, and usefulness).

“Together, Indonesia will advance with Kagama,” he declared.

The event culminated with Kagama Lari Untuk Berbagi (KLUB) handing over IDR 183 million scholarships to UGM.

The funds raised through the UGM Ultra 75K Charity Run (UUCR) will be distributed through the Gadjah Mada Peduli program alongside Kagama’s scholarship initiatives.

As part of the Nitilaku celebrations, the UGM Knowledge Exhibition, showcasing the university’s historical journey, innovations, and contributions to various scientific fields, has been held since Dec. 14 and will run until UGM’s Anniversary on Dec. 19.

In addition, from Dec. 14-15, the public could enjoy art performances, the Pasar Kangen nostalgic market, an MSME market featuring traditional and modern arts, and a variety of culinary delights and vintage products.

24 UGM students received scholarships from the Indonesia Morowali Industry Park (IMIP) Peduli Foundation. The scholarship recipients were from the Faculty of Engineering and the Vocational College.

The amount of the bonded scholarship covers each recipient’s tuition fees, so the total scholarship offered by the IMIP Foundation is Rp 321,500,000.

The scholarship was given by the HR Director of PT IMIP, Achmanto Mendatu, accompanied by the President Director of GCNS, Liu Jin Shan, witnessed by the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, Dr. Arie Sujito, and the Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Sindung Tjahyadi.

Dr. Sujito expressed his appreciation to the IMIP Foundation for providing scholarships for UGM students and his hope that this scholarship will support the smooth running of their studies.

He said this scholarship is a form of trust and commitment from UGM and IMIP to support education development for students who will later become part of Indonesia’s industrial development process.

“I think the partnership of UGM with the central government, local government, and the private sector is essential, especially in driving technological transformation. This synergy will certainly strengthen and advance the agendas in achieving strategic goals,” he said in the UGM Multimedia Room 2 on Monday (Dec. 9).

For the vice-rector, this scholarship support will help UGM students hone their abilities, which require mastering technology inside and outside the classroom.

He believes cooperation with the industrial world will open up more learning spaces. Students will have choices in advancing themselves to obtain the necessary competencies.

“Hopefully, it will later connect with the usefulness and needs of the industrial world. The rapid development of the industrial world in Indonesia will be a challenge for us. It’s not just about technical devices but also social responsibilities. Therefore, industrial development efforts in Indonesia have a vision for ecological development,” he added.

Achmanto Mendatu added that there are two reasons why the industrial world cares about education in Indonesia. First, the government encourages it. The government aims to accelerate the nation’s mission, which is a Golden Indonesia in 2045.

“At that time, Indonesia at least aspires to be a high-income country,” he said.

Second, there are development sectors that need to be improved. One of them is the downstream sector, which is believed to be able to increase income. Mendatu hopes that many scholarships will be given in the future.

He acknowledged that providing these scholarships would entice students to work in the downstream industry in the future.

“My message is that work is difficult. Don’t imagine working like what’s on TikTok, okay,” he said.

As an engineering graduate, he said, graduates who want to work must be willing to sweat. They may get oily, dusty, muddy, and so on.

“At first, it has to be like that; no job journey is immediately pleasant. We hope you will stay in our industry later. However, it is not impossible to move after the scholarship requirements are met,” he added.

Liu Jin Shan further stated that education is the foundation of societal progress and the key to producing a superior generation in the future.

He conveyed that since its establishment, PT Guang Ching Nickel and Stainless Steel (GCNS) has supported the IMIP Peduli Foundation and is committed to contributing to social progress, with education as one of its main focuses.

“Through cooperation with UGM, we hope to provide wider learning opportunities for outstanding students so that they can fully develop their potential and create more value for society,” he explained.

Birrul Qodriyah, a Bidik Misi scholarship recipient and UGM alumna who completed her education up to a master’s degree and started her own business, shared her inspirational journey during a briefing for KIP-K scholarship recipients on Tuesday (Nov. 26).

Speaking in front of 1,700 students from the 2024 Indonesia Smart College Card (KIP-K) program, Qodriyah recounted her journey from receiving financial aid for higher education to earning various degrees and achievements.

In 2010, Qodriyah received the Bidik Misi program in the Nursing Science program at the Faculty of Medicine.

The woman from Bantul, who now runs a furniture business, reflected on her college days, emphasizing that everyone has the opportunity to achieve success.

“On the first day I found out I was accepted at UGM, I wrote down that I would become UGM’s top student, even though I didn’t know at the time what it meant to be the best student,” Qodriyah recalled.

Through hard work, Qodriyah realized her dream three years later when she was named UGM’s Most Outstanding Student in 2013.

From this experience, Qodriyah learned that determination can come from anywhere. As long as someone has confidence and affirms that their goals are attainable, the effort and resolve needed to achieve them will be eased.

This was something Qodriyah experienced firsthand.

“I used to see my seniors chatting with the president, and in my heart, I prayed that I could also meet and talk with the president one day. And, as it turned out, Allah SWT granted that wish,” she revealed.

Qodriyah was eventually selected as the representative for Bidik Misi students from across Indonesia and had the opportunity to deliver a speech in front of then-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2014.

After graduating from UGM, Qodriyah pursued a master’s degree at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, with an LPDP Indonesia scholarship. She also actively participated in international conferences and built global networks.

Qodriyah later started a furniture business called “Cabinesia,” motivated by her desire to create jobs.

“The state has funded my education, so I must contribute. It may not be much yet, but this is my way of giving back for what I have received,” Qodriyah said.

In addition to sharing her experiences, Qodriyah also outlined the challenges students will face in the future. She predicts that in 30 years, there will be a phenomenon of academic inflation.

As more and more people graduate from higher education institutions, intense competition will arise, especially in the job market. UGM graduates are expected to master various competencies and become pioneers in every generation.

Therefore, Qodriyah stressed the importance of exploring experiences and soft skills during college.

“We live in a technological era. Unfortunately, many of us lack essential soft skills. We spend much time on social media, but only as consumers,” Qodriyah explained.

She reminded students not to waste opportunities to learn and create while still in college. Studying is important, but students should also consider the contributions they can make to society and the country.

The KIP-K program, which has been running since 2021 under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), has opened broad access to education for the lower-middle class.

The provision of financial aid is also part of UGM’s effort to ensure students’ education is not hindered by economic conditions. This year, UGM accepted 1,676 KIP-K students and 24 additional students nominated by the community.

Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni Dr. Arie Sujito emphasized the need to uphold the commitment to educational inclusivity.

“Expanding access to higher education, especially for marginalized groups, is necessary. It is also crucial to improve human resource quality, particularly for national development,” Dr. Sujito explained.

The Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Sindung Tjahyadi, expressed a similar sentiment. The KIP-K scholarship has helped students gain access to education at UGM.

“It greatly helps them improve access to education,” he stated.

The 14th National fegress of the Gadjah Mada Alumni Family (Munas Kagama) was held from Nov. 14 to 17.

The General Chair of the Central Executive Board (PP) Kagama, Ganjar Pranowo, officially opened this event on Friday (Nov. 15) at the Mercure Convention Center Ancol, Jakarta.

With the theme “Kagama Service for the Nation,” 1,050 UGM alumni from across Indonesia and overseas attended the event. This year’s participants set a new record as the largest in Munas Kagama’s history.

The chair of the Munas Kagama XIV Organizing Committee, Dr. A.A.G.N Ari Dwipayana, shared that preparations for the Munas began on July 1, 2024, with planning stages and the launch of the logo and jingle at Rumah Kagama.

Kagama also organized 13 pre-munas seminars in various cities, discussing diverse topics aimed at preparing the nation for Indonesia Emas 2045.

“Kagama is a unique organization because it uses the word ‘family’ instead of association or union. This is why families from across the archipelago and the world are returning to Rumah Kagama now,” Dr. Dwipayana explained.

He continued, stating that besides being a home, Kagama also serves as a place for all alumni to provide benefits, inspiration, and real contributions to UGM, the surrounding community, and the nation.

The leadership may change, but the commitment to the nation remains. This is the main reason behind this year’s theme, as Kagama must always be ready to contribute to solving the country’s challenges.

“We also thank everyone for their ideas, initiatives, and thoughts that have developed during the Munas preparation process, especially PP Kagama, who prepared all the content we will discuss throughout this Munas,” he concluded.

The Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Professor Ova Emilia, expressed her gratitude for the excellent synergy and cooperation established with alumni.

Professor Emilia explained that many programs have been successfully implemented due to the strong collaboration between the university and Kagama, such as the Community Service Program (KKN), which has been running since 1951 and now operates in 36 provinces across Indonesia.

“Other programs include UGM Menyapa Alumni to foster close relations with alumni in various regions, and the Praktisi Mengajar Program, which connects academic learning with practical field experience,” she elaborated.

Professor Emilia also mentioned the downstream program in various forms and the affirmation program for selected students from remote areas.

Not to be overlooked are the pre-graduation training program, which prepares UGM students for their careers, and the Kagama Scholarship Program, which has been immensely helpful.

“Thanks to this scholarship program, we can confidently say that no student will have to drop out of UGM due to financial difficulties once admitted,” Professor Emilia said.

She further noted that numerous opportunities can be achieved together if the synergy between UGM and Kagama is well-established from the upstream, which refers to the university, to the downstream, which refers to Kagama as the alumni organization.

“We can work together to accelerate solidarity, harmony, and usefulness,” she concluded. The rector expressed hope that Munas Kagama’s entire agenda would run smoothly for the benefit of UGM.

Ganjar Pranowo, as the General Chair of PP KAGAMA for the past two periods, stated that he always cherishes the moment of meeting fellow UGM alumni because it brings back the warmth of the place where their dreams were first built as students.

“Although time passes and life takes us in different directions, the feelings and atmosphere among us remain the same, so keep up the funny and quirky jokes because they make us feel like family,” he said emotionally.

He emphasized the concept of “migunani,” or usefulness, which has always been the goal wherever Kagama is present.

This sense of usefulness was particularly felt during times of crisis in Indonesia, such as the global pandemic, when Kagama members worldwide contributed with all the resources they had.

During natural disasters, Kagama mobilizes its network, resources, and manpower to provide assistance and solutions.

“We are at the forefront whenever the government seeks solutions for national development, whether in social, economic, energy, or cultural sectors,” he added.

Pranowo also shared Kagama’s growth over the past decade, as evidenced by the increase in regional boards.

The number of Regional Executive Boards (Pengda) has grown from 24 to 34, the number of Branch Executive Boards (Pengcab) has increased from 61 to 212, and overseas branches have expanded from 3 to 12.

Faculty Alumni Boards have grown from 14 to 18, and the largest increase has been seen in Kagama Community groups, which have risen from just 7 to 110.

“Wherever we stand, we hold up the sky to contribute to everyone,” Pranowo concluded.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin), the current Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Teguh Setyabudi, the Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta, and Basuki Hadimuljono, who was entrusted with the role of Head of the Ibu Kota Nusantara Authority in the Merah Putih Cabinet.

Ganjar Pranowo sounded a gong to mark the official opening of the Munas. The inauguration of the new General Chair of PP Kagama will take place on Saturday night (Nov. 16) after all the plenary sessions have concluded.

Alfin Novemyanto, a master’s student in Constitutional Law at UGM Faculty of Law (FH UGM), never imagined he would receive such recognition, given the difficult journey that brought him here.

Raised by his single mother, who worked as a scavenger to support Alfin and his two siblings, Alfin never gave up on his dream of higher education despite the tough financial situation.

“My mother is a scavenger and a single parent, so I want to raise her dignity,” Alfin shared on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024.

Alfin, the second of three children, was born and raised in Sragen, but his family now lives in Karanganyar, Central Java.

Despite their reliance on income from collecting used goods, his mother remained determined to send all three children to school.

Due to financial constraints, Alfin attended Universitas Terbuka (UT) after graduating high school in 2018 because it allowed him to study while working.

Fortunately, he received a Bidikmisi scholarship (now KIP-K), enabling him to continue his education.

Determined to make the most of this opportunity, Alfin became actively involved in student organizations and competitions.

In 2021, he was named the Best Outstanding Student at UT Surakarta and became a finalist at the 33rd National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) in 2020.

Thanks to his academic and extracurricular achievements, Alfin received additional scholarships from UT’s alumni association (IKA UT) and the ICE Institute.

Alfin’s commitment to education didn’t stop after his undergraduate degree.

In 2023, he applied for a scholarship from the Indonesian Ministry of Finance’s LPDP Scholarship. He successfully earned the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree.

“I’m grateful to be able to study at FH UGM,” he said, beaming with pride.

Alfin’s achievements are undoubtedly a result of his mother’s unwavering support and prayers.

For Alfin, his mother is his greatest inspiration.

His persistence and accomplishments have inspired many others to pursue their dreams, regardless of their circumstances.

“Don’t kill your dreams because of financial constraints. Anyone can be anything. The bigger your dreams, the higher your achievements will be,” Alfin encouraged.

The UGM Vocational College (SV UGM) held an alumni gathering for its 15th-anniversary celebration. This year’s “Connecting Generations, Inspiring Change” gathering occurred on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024, at SV UGM Teaching Industry Learning Center (TILC).

The Kavogama Awards scholarship, funded by donations from alumni, was presented during this event. This scholarship provides financial assistance to outstanding students from SV UGM.

Symbolically, the scholarships were awarded to representatives of two students.

“This scholarship reflects the alumni’s care for the younger generation. Thank you to the alumni for their donations, which show concern for our students,” said Yanto Harlianto, Chair of SV UGM’s Alumni Family (Kavogama).

Harlianto added that they will continue to support academically outstanding and underprivileged students and provide internship opportunities.

“We will help students with internships, and after graduation, we will provide job vacancy information and assist with industrial visit programs,” he explained.

Professor Agus Maryono, Dean of SV UGM, also expressed appreciation and gratitude for the scholarship.

He hopes that alumni will continue to assist students currently pursuing their studies.

“I hope alumni can help the students by facilitating internships or providing sponsorships. It doesn’t need to be a lot; every bit helps,” he stated.

In addition to providing scholarships, SV UGM recognized and awarded six selected alumni who have successfully created jobs or become entrepreneurs.

These six alumni come from various study programs and are involved in diverse businesses.

Examples include Food and Beverage (FnB) ventures, mining management, travel, maggot cultivation, fertilizer production, and more.

The alumni shared insights into their businesses and inspirational stories during the event.

“As much as possible, alumni should have their businesses,” said Professor Maryono.

The dean mentioned that alumni have great opportunities to be invited back to campus as practitioner lecturers or guest speakers in Entrepreneurship courses.

The experiences gained by alumni can be shared with students to enhance their knowledge and provide real-world insights into the job market and entrepreneurship.

Education is a fundamental need for everyone and a means for a nation to progress and become more civilized. However, the desire to pursue higher education, such as attending university, often faces obstacles, including financial constraints.

Recognizing this, BSI (Bank Syariah Indonesia) donated scholarships worth IDR 2.3 billion to assist students from economically disadvantaged families with their tuition fees.

Ficko Hardowiseto, Regional CEO of PT Bank Syariah Indonesia Tbk Region Office VII Semarang, symbolically handed over the scholarship to Dr. Arie Sujito, UGM Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni, on Tuesday (Oct. 1) in the UGM Leadership Room.

Ficko Hardowiseto stated that this scholarship program is an annual initiative funded by the company’s zakat (alms) from BSI’s profits.

“The BSI Scholarship program is a routine activity of BSI because, as a Sharia bank, we always allocate corporate zakat. This aligns with our tagline that BSI is a financial, social, and spiritual companion,” explained Hardowiseto.

He also hoped the scholarship program would benefit the university and the UGM students.

“Hopefully, this will be useful for UGM and the students,” he said.

Dr. Sujito thanked BSI for providing scholarships to UGM students. He agreed with Hardowiseto that this initiative is not just about funding but also carries social and spiritual significance.

“This collaboration is not merely about funding; it also has spiritual and social values,” explained Dr. Sujito.

Furthermore, the vice-rector added that he and all relevant parties at UGM are working hard to ensure that the existing scholarship programs continue aligning with UGM’s values as a “people’s university.”

“The university will strive to continue accommodating students so they can complete their education,” he emphasized.
