Many people consume eggs as a popular source of animal protein. The high demand for animal protein correlates with increased egg consumption.

Therefore, clean and disease-free eggs are essential to prevent the spread of diseases that can affect public health, such as typhoid.

“This disease occurs in eggs contaminated with Salmonella bacteria,” said Salma Nur Azizah, a 2022 UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) student, Thursday (Feb. 6).

In response to this issue, Azizah, along with fellow student Mohammad Rizky Zulfahmi, proposed using ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to combat Salmonella bacteria in the layer chicken farming industry.

Azizah explained that UV-C light has the shortest wavelength among other ultraviolet rays. Based on various references they studied, UV-C light is strong enough to damage bacterial DNA, including Salmonella.

“Using UV-C light to combat Salmonella contamination is an effective and simple method. UV-C light stops the growth of pathogenic bacteria by breaking their DNA chains,” she explained.

Zulfahmi added that the UV-C system designed to combat Salmonella bacteria consists of several parts: a control panel, sterilization plastic, egg tray, machine wheels, frame, gear wheels, conveyor belt, and UV-C light.

Specifically, UV-C light can kill Salmonella bacteria in 10-15 minutes, depending on the wavelength and exposure time.

“Installing UV-C light on the conveyor after grading can optimize time efficiency in industrial-scale operations. Therefore, it is important to introduce this UV-C sterilization method to the layer chicken farming industry to enhance food safety and quality,” Zulfahmi elaborated.

The creative idea from these two Animal Science students, under the supervision of Galuh Adi Insani, won 2nd place in the Poultry Literacy Competition held by Universitas Padjadjaran’s Poultry Professional Group from Aug. 27 to Sept. 26, 2024.

An institution is expected to establish effective communication with the media to build its reputation. Good communication enables an institution to convey its programs and innovations effectively to the public and manage potential crises when facing negative issues.

This was discussed during a workshop titled ‘Internal Communication Guidelines’ organized by the UGM Secretariat on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025, in Multimedia Room 1, UGM Central Office.

The workshop featured four experienced media practitioners: Tirta Mandira Hudhi, MD, Winda Pratiwi, Farchan Noor Rachman, and Mohamad Ryan Saputra.

Mohamad Ryan Saputra, speaking on the Media Appearance Application, explained several media communication channels, including press releases, press conferences, media interviews, articles and opinions, social media, and media kits.

When these communication channels are well-managed, an institution can effectively convey information to the public, enhance transparency, address sensitive issues, and communicate its programs or innovations.

“This also helps in managing communication crises,” he said.

During a crisis, several key steps ensure information is delivered accurately, such as coordinating with relevant parties, prioritizing data transparency for agreed-upon matters, and responding quickly to minimize the chances of misinformation from other sources.

He also emphasized the importance of having a spokesperson to communicate information clearly and competently.

“Using various owned media platforms to share the same information provided to journalists ensures that other media and the public have accurate reference points,” he added.

Farchan Noor Rachman, speaking on Publicity Handling and Government Relationships, highlighted five key principles in media communication: transparency, which calls for clear and honest information; consistency, maintaining a stable narrative across platforms; responsiveness, addressing media inquiries and public concerns quickly; empathy, understanding the audience’s perspective and concerns; and proactivity, anticipating potential issues and preparing responses in advance.

Meanwhile, Tirta Mandira Hudhi, MD, on the topic of Building Community Relationships, emphasized the importance of establishing strong relationships with stakeholders to build trust, as such relationships can strengthen collaboration.

“A positive reputation attracts new partners and sustains existing relationships,” he explained.

Winda Pratiwi, in her topic, Setting the Communication Officer, stated that PR practitioners today must be strategic in delivering knowledge-based information.

She urged PR professionals to avoid making careless comments or creating content that might foster negative affirmations among the public.

“On social media, there are both positive and negative affirmations. Negative affirmations can lead to cyberbullying, so don’t use your thumbs recklessly. Hence, the campaign ‘We listen and we don’t judge’ was launched,” she concluded.

Dr. Andi Sandi Antonius Tabusassa Tonralipu, UGM’s University Secretary, expressed his hope that this workshop would help PR practitioners better understand the crucial role of public relations and implement it in real-world scenarios, especially when facing communication crises in the era of advanced information and communication technology.

Hundreds of cultural figures, artists, and academics attended the Arkipelagis: Cultural Reflection symposium at UGM’s Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK UGM) on Tuesday (Jan. 28).

Organized by Yogyakarta’s cultural figures and artists, this symposium also marked the completion of Hilmar Farid’s term as Director General of Culture from 2015 to 2024, elaborating on his contributions to cultural work.

The symposium served as a space for reflection on the achievements and lessons from previous cultural efforts and was an important step in determining the strategic direction of Indonesia’s culture in the future.

The event was attended by Yogyakarta Governor and King of the Yogyakarta Palace, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Hilmar Farid (Director General of Culture 2015-2024), cultural figure Butet Kartaredjasa, artist Nasirun, and many others. Several speakers also presented their reflections on culture.

On this occasion, Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X expressed his thoughts on a new Indonesian culture, which should be progressive and civilized.

“Indonesia must be able to prosper, advance, and bring justice to all its people, from generation to generation,” said the Sultan.

He highlighted the urgency of building a visionary culture through the concept of the New Indonesian Culture, which intertwines with the grand idea of archipelagicism.

He explained that this concept connects traditional roots with the energy of renewal for the future of the nation, a vision that combines local wisdom with the dynamics of the times for the benefit of the Indonesian people.

“In this context, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika should not just be a slogan but a cultural strategy that is translated into public policies,” emphasized the Sultan.

According to him, history has taught that living in multiculturalism, with tolerance and mutual respect, can be a source of progress. In Spain, Andalusia was a symbol of harmonious coexistence between Jews, Christians, and Muslims.

Knowledge and culture flourished at that time because everyone learned from other cultures. History also shows that the integration of various cultures and nations is inevitable in the history of Nusantara.

The Sultan also discussed cultural plurality, emphasizing the great benefits when cultural plurality becomes intertwined, creating a reciprocal cultural richness.

“Beyond that, we will also be able to carry out development plans with as little distortion, suspicion, and misunderstanding as possible,” he explained.

In the Sultan’s view, the New Indonesian Culture is a vision of a progressive and civilized Indonesia. Indonesia must be able to prosper, advance, and bring justice to all its people, from generation to generation.

All of this must be developed from values that flow through society’s veins.’ Forgetting ethnic and cultural values and indigenous communities will only result in an Indonesia that grows without soul or identity.

“In the end, we will not achieve constructive, visionary, anticipatory, progressive, critical, and sustainable cultural development,” he added.

In addition to the cultural oration from Sri Sultan, other cultural figures and artists also delivered their orations.

Nirwan Dewanto reminded the audience of the meaning of archipelagicism as a productive movement that builds. Other speakers included Charles Toto, Titah AW, Afrizal Malna, Premana W. Premadi, Bambang Sugiharto, Farah Wardani, and Nia Dinata.

The formulation team for the Arkipelagis: Cultural Reflection Symposium outlined several key points in a forum that lasted until the afternoon.

One of the points made was that supporting and improving cultural work in Indonesia is just as important as preserving or advancing cultural sites.

It is important to rebuild contextual awareness of traditional knowledge as a relevant solution to addressing today’s sustainable development challenges.

Cultural funding should be expanded to include cultural journalism to bridge public awareness of arts and culture issues and strengthen the dialogue between society, cultural actors, and policymakers.

The advancement of culture must be based on inter-material perspectives, non-violence, and inclusivity.

The urgency of a cultural strategy must always be emphasized. Specifically, this means formulating a direction for culture.

Indonesia’s cultural direction, with archipelagic awareness, will strive to avoid the trap of merely reinforcing identity and instead pursue improving the quality of its culture, expanding cultural indicators, and seeking positionality in the world through cultural diplomacy.

Immigrants have become one of the social issues emerging in various countries. Conflicts, wars, and poverty are among the factors behind the high number of immigrants within a community.

Addressing this issue, Mumtaz Khan Chopan captures the stories of these immigrants through art.

During a parallel session of The 20th International Association for the Study of Forced Migration Conference 2025 on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at UGM’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), Chopan shared how his work is based on his personal experience as an immigrant.

His work in the Museum of Shredded Memories explores the emotional situations experienced by forced immigrant groups—those who were forced to leave their homeland when their country became uninhabitable.

Chopan managed to assemble various relics of immigrants, such as destroyed documents, photographs, and abandoned clothing, into an installation that illustrates the horrors and trauma of immigrants.

“I capture their journey memories of moving from one place to another. I made it as chaotic as possible to depict the disorder of the situation,” Chopan explained.

He described an unforgettable feeling shared by nearly all immigrants—the feeling of insecurity, constantly needing shelter, and having to forget everything except their own and their families’ lives.

They were forced to leave their birthplace, separated from relatives, and even had to erase their identity to survive. Chopan, an artist born in Afghanistan who once became an immigrant in Pakistan, has memories deeply connected to his own work.

“I clearly remember when I came home from school, carrying a small notebook, and when I got home, my mother said we were going to Pakistan. I didn’t know anything and left the notebook at home,” Chopan recounted.

At that time, in 1999, Afghanistan was facing a civil conflict with the Taliban. Hundreds of people were killed, and Chopan’s small family was forced to flee to Pakistan. They lived in a refugee camp with 3 million other immigrants.

Gradually, Chopan became interested in art. Unfortunately, as an immigrant, he couldn’t attend art school in Pakistan, so he returned to Afghanistan to study art at Kabul University’s Faculty of Fine Art.

“Many people said I wouldn’t be able to get a job in the art field, even though my interest in art was very strong,” he added.

At one point, Chopan visited one of his cousin’s weddings in Afghanistan. When he got on the bus with a camera in hand, the people around him started to panic and tried to hide Chopan’s camera.

It turned out that at that time, the Taliban were actively searching for and killing journalists or anyone seen carrying a camera. He still remembers the fear and trauma of that moment to this day.

Chopan once worked as an IT and computer expert to find a job. He was quite skilled in that field but felt unfulfilled because he lacked a sense of purpose. He eventually returned to art and came to Indonesia to continue his work.

“Afghanistan doesn’t have an art space as large as Indonesia. I’m happy to be in this country to continue my hobby,” he said.

Although now living in Yogyakarta, Chopan continues to raise awareness of immigrants through his art.

Dr. Suzie Handayani, a lecturer in the Anthropology program at FIB UGM, also appreciates Chopan’s art for successfully portraying the experiences of immigrants through a collection of fragmented memories and relics.

Anyone who sees Chopan’s installations may experience deep sadness and trauma.

According to Dr. Handayani, Chopan’s work seems to draw viewers into a bleak political situation, with no welfare guarantee and silencing of voices.

“I’m impressed by how Chopan never tidies up his work; he leaves it in chaos, reflecting the real emotions of immigrants,” she said.

The issue of waste continues to plague many cities in Indonesia and requires serious attention, especially in Yogyakarta, which is currently experiencing a waste emergency.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), as an active institution in environmental conservation and sustainable development, is intensifying its Zero Waste campaign by implementing independent waste management on campus.

UGM’s waste management efforts include promoting environmental preservation through guidelines for separating waste by type, reducing the use of Styrofoam food containers, encouraging personal tumblers, and motivating the academic community to maintain health through regular exercise.

Nurudin Basyori from the Facilities Maintenance Division, Directorate of Assets at UGM, stated that the university collects about 6-7 cubic meters of waste daily, transported in three trucks.

“Every day, we transport 6-7 cubic meters of waste,” he said at the UGM Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT UGM) complex in Berbah, Sleman, on Wednesday (Jan. 22).

In line with the rector’s regulation, the waste collected is pre-sorted and placed in designated bins around the campus.

“We do not collect unsorted waste,” he explained.

However, this directive is not always fully adhered to, as certain areas, such as Jalan Sekip, still mix waste, requiring workers to sort it.

“Some areas comply, but not all,” he noted.

Although the Asset Directorate’s primary responsibility is waste collection, Basyori emphasizes the importance of sorting waste by type to the cleaning staff. He believes continuous education about waste sorting is essential.

Beyond maintaining campus cleanliness, UGM also engages in waste processing.

“The sorted waste from faculties is transported to PIAT UGM,” he explained.

The sorted waste is processed at the PIAT UGM complex in Berbah. Organic waste, such as leaves, is turned into compost.

“The resulting compost is used for gardens around the campus,” he added.

The Zero Waste campaign at UGM aims to reduce daily waste volume while facilitating waste collection and transforming it into something beneficial.

Pipit Noviyanti, who oversees waste processing activities at PIAT UGM, explained that the recycling innovation center processes three categories of waste from the UGM campus: leaf sweepings, branches, and mixed residual waste.

Leaf and branch waste is composted using windrow composting and composting bins. Residual waste undergoes manual sorting and shredding.

“The organic waste output becomes compost, utilized for PIAT UGM’s internal environment and campus landscaping,” she explained.

There are three outputs for mixed shredded waste: organic pulp for composting, low-value plastics processed by third-party partners into building materials, and non-recyclable residual waste sent for final disposal.

To support waste sorting and processing, Noviyanti emphasized the need for collective responsibility among all stakeholders, including students, staff, and educators.

“Our hope is for UGM to be free of unsorted waste, where all waste is properly separated by type,” she concluded.

The Kaphibara team from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), secured third place in the 2024 Marketeers Innovation Challenge (MIC).

The team consists of five undergraduate Management students from the class of 2022: Audrey Valensya Nabilla, Ayu Rahmi Widianarsi, Annisa Mayza Jasmine, Alifa Talitha Tsaqif Ramadhani, and Metta Varent.

They competed against 113 teams from universities across Indonesia during the competition, which was held on Dec. 16, 2024, in Jakarta.

Alifa Talitha Tsaqif Ramadhani explained that all competing teams were required to submit case study solutions as proposals. The organizers then selected the top 10 teams to present their proposals in the semi-finals, which were conducted online.

Following this selection process, the top three teams were chosen to compete in the finals held in person.

“We are incredibly grateful and happy to have reached this point,” Ramadhani shared on Thursday (Jan. 16).

Reflecting on their achievement, Ramadhani emphasized the extensive brainstorming and hard work required to reach this milestone.

She expressed gratitude for the accomplishment, particularly because the competition is a prestigious national-level business case challenge featuring 114 exceptional teams with outstanding ideas.

In the competition, Ramadhani explained that the teams were tasked with designing strategies to strengthen Jiniso’s position as Indonesia’s leading unisex jeans brand.

The primary focus was on creating an integrated customer experience across various sales channels, both online and offline, while enhancing brand awareness of Jiniso’s transformation into a unisex brand.

Additionally, teams were required to propose creative branding campaigns that addressed consumer needs and improved Jiniso’s competitiveness in the local fashion market.

“The proposed omnichannel approach needed to address consumer demands by providing easy access to products, information, and services anytime and anywhere,” she elaborated.

Rokhima Rostiani, the team’s faculty advisor, highlighted the challenges the team faced on their journey to the finals. Beyond delivering innovative and relevant solutions, the team also had to manage overlapping schedules with final exams.

“Thankfully, the team overcame these obstacles and achieved this remarkable result. This achievement was also made possible by the faculty’s support, including providing facilities for the in-person final presentation and mentoring from faculty members,” she said.

Rostiani expressed hope that the Kaphibara team from FEB UGM would continue contributing and creating innovative solutions for Indonesian industries within and beyond the competition. She also viewed this success as a gateway to new opportunities and future achievements.

Semar UGM, one of UGM’s most innovative flagship vehicles, is preparing to debut in the 2025 Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East, which will be held at Lusail Circuit, Qatar, from Feb. 8 to 12.

Shell Eco-Marathon is a prestigious competition that showcases energy-efficient vehicles that push the boundaries of innovation.

This year marks a new chapter after five consecutive years of the competition being held in Indonesia, specifically at the Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Hans Tobias Sihombing, the General Manager of Semar UGM, stated that the Semar UGM team is presenting two of its best vehicles to compete with energy-efficient innovations from numerous international student teams.

These vehicles are the Semar Urban Hydroz 1.2, powered by hydrogen fuel, and the Semar Proto 4.0, which uses electricity as its primary energy source.

“We aim to bring a grand vision to promote sustainability innovation through this international competition,” Sihombing said in a statement to reporters on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Sihombing noted that Semar UGM achieved various outstanding accomplishments in previous competitions, such as first place in the Urban Hydrogen Fuel Category, first place in the Prototype Electric Category with a record of 938 km/kWh, first place in the Off-track Data and Telemetry Category, and third place in the Regional Championship.

“Semar UGM’s achievements in previous years demonstrate the team’s dominance and competence as one of the best in the field of energy-efficient vehicles,” he explained.

Semar UGM’s path to victory was not easy. Great sacrifices had to be made, such as missing final exams, which they had to retake after the competition.

The team faced tremendous pressure during the competition due to a critical issue. The Semar Proto 4.0 failed the technical inspection until the second day, leaving no opportunity for Semar Proto to practice on the track.

However, through intense discussions, collaboration, and unwavering determination, Semar Proto 4.0 ultimately claimed 1st place in its category.

“This experience was a nerve-wracking moment that demonstrated the team’s resilience, dedication, and determination to achieve the best and emerge as champions,” he recalled.

Semar UGM is determined to continue this spirit of innovation as it brings its environmentally friendly vehicle designs closer to implementation on the road. The journey toward this achievement is not done alone.

Semar UGM is proud to receive support from various partners committed to sustainability, such as PT Petrokimia Gresik, Pos Properti Indonesia, Jericho, PLN, Toyota Astra Motor, Citra Jelajah Informatika, Wefreight, Inalum, Pebsteel, Dharma Precision Parts, and Air Liquide.

Semar UGM is also continuously open to collaborations with new partners who share the same vision: to create beneficial and sustainable innovations and creations for the world.
