Aldino Javier Saviola was among the 841 graduate students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) who graduated on Thursday (Jan. 23) at Grha Sabha Pramana.

Saviola graduated from the Master’s Program in Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM), at the age of 22 years, 6 months, and 18 days.

In comparison, the average age of the 691 Master’s graduates in this period was 29 years, 6 months, and 15 days.

In addition to being the youngest graduate, Saviola was also one of two individuals recognized as the fastest Master’s graduate in this period. While the average study duration for a Master’s program is 2 years and 2 months, Saviola completed his studies in just 1 year and 2 months.

Saviola explained that he completed his undergraduate studies at FMIPA UGM in May 2023.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, he sought an opportunity to apply for the Master’s Education Scholarship towards a Doctorate for Outstanding Graduates (PMDSU) Batch 7 from the then Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

This prestigious scholarship enables outstanding graduates to complete their Master’s and Doctoral degrees within four years.

Born in Purwokerto on Mar. 27, 2002, Saviola expressed joy and gratitude for completing two study programs while remaining active in social activities and research.

“I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to receive this scholarship,” said Saviola.

The fast-track requirement to complete the Master’s and Doctoral degrees within four years motivated him to finish his studies as quickly as possible. Simultaneously, Saviola completed his thesis while also enrolled in the doctoral program at the same faculty.

Saviola’s passion and talent in chemistry enabled him to produce innovative research, particularly focused on the development of nanocatalysts for biofuel production.

His thesis research was motivated by the continued high use of fossil fuels for aviation fuel.

“I tried to develop bio-aviation fuel from biomass sources, specifically used cooking oil, which is not only abundant in nature but also represents a waste-to-wealth innovation aimed at preserving the environment,” Saviola explained.

Saviola’s research on the hydrotreatment process successfully converted used cooking oil into bio-aviation fuel with a chemical composition very similar to fossil-based aviation fuel.

Over the past three years, Saviola’s work on nanocatalyst development has resulted in several research publications, many of which have been published in international journals. To date, he has 26 Scopus-indexed journal publications.

“I believe this is an incredible achievement for me. Hopefully, in the future, I can be even more productive and produce more work,” said the youngest of two siblings.

Saviola hopes his research can become an alternative to support the transition to greener energy processes, considering the government’s and global consensus’s ongoing efforts to address climate change.

“While the research still requires further evaluation and development, I hope this innovation can eventually be applied on an industrial scale,” he added.

When asked about his experience studying at UGM, Saviola said that he was confident in his choice from the beginning.

“Without a doubt, since my undergraduate years, I chose FMIPA UGM’s Department of Chemistry as my first love through the academic excellence-based entrance selection (SNMPTN) pathway,” he revealed.

The study program he chose is accredited internationally and has experts in the field, ensuring a high-quality education.

“The quality of knowledge imparted to students is excellent, and as a result, I decided to stay at UGM for my doctoral studies,” he emphasized.

According to him, FMIPA UGM offers various facilities and a conducive environment to support student learning.

For those looking to graduate quickly with outstanding achievements, Saviola advises both undergraduate and postgraduate students to manage their time as best as possible.

“We need to be diligent, persistent, and meticulous in conducting research, as these are key factors in graduating with the best achievements,” he concluded.

Advances in science and technology have significantly simplified various aspects of life, including the design and prediction of material properties. These can now be performed with high precision before being processed in a laboratory.

This progress is possible due to developments in computational techniques and quantum theory, which enable scientists to model and simulate the behavior of atoms at the nanoscale. One proven and accurate approach for modeling material properties at the atomic level is Density Functional Theory (DFT).

Professor Sholihun, a newly inaugurated professor of crystal and molecular computational design at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM), highlighted this.

Professor Sholihun delivered his inaugural speech titled “Crystal-Molecular Computational Design and Its Applications: Quantum Simulations Using Density Functional Theory (DFT)“ during the ceremony held on Thursday, Dec. 12, in the UGM Senate Hall.

In his speech, Professor Sholihun emphasized that computational design has become critical in addressing the growing demand for new materials with unique properties tailored for specific applications.

Developing such materials using traditional means requires lengthy processes and significant costs. Computational design offers the advantage of virtually predicting and designing material properties before physical creation.

“By utilizing principles of physics, chemistry, and mathematics, computational material design builds models that illustrate atomic behavior, their interactions, arrangements, and responses to conditions such as pressure, temperature, and magnetic fields,” he explained.

Professor Sholihun elaborated on the significance of crystals and molecules, which are fundamental forms of matter with contrasting yet complementary properties for various technological applications.

Quantum simulations enable predictions of how crystals and molecules behave under different conditions.

“These simulations are essential for the development of new materials,” he added.

Furthermore, quantum simulations allow researchers to study and predict material properties by incorporating quantum effects, often overlooked in classical approaches.

DFT, in particular, calculates a system’s total energy based on electron density rather than wave functions.

“With DFT, we leverage the principle that all quantum properties of a system can be derived from electron density, which is a function of spatial position,” he explained.

DFT’s primary advantage is its efficiency in simulating systems with many electrons, making it suitable for modeling complex materials like metals, semiconductors, and molecular systems.

DFT can also simulate nanoparticles, understand atomic clusters, and study molecular systems. Its applications span a range of fields, including quantum technology, drug delivery, and the discovery of new materials.

Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo, Secretary of the UGM Board of Professors, remarked that Professor Sholihun is among UGM’s 502 active professors and one of 49 active professors out of 72 within FMIPA UGM.

Professor of Imaging Physics at the UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) Gede Bayu Suparta takes pride in his research accomplishment, the Digital X-Ray Fluorescence Radiography (RSFD) device.

Now ready for mass production, this innovation is set to support healthcare services, particularly in medical screenings, medical check-ups (MCUs), emergency services (extremities), and diagnostics.

Professor Suparta has been researching RSFD since 1990, even before the rapid advancement of computer and internet technologies.

With funding from various research schemes supported by the Ministry of Research and Technology, intensive RSFD research began in 2000 at the Department of Physics, FMIPA UGM, involving students and research partners.

“Hopefully, this tool can inspire UGM researchers because the process of commercializing research results is incredibly challenging, costly, time-consuming, and exhausting,” he reflected on Monday (Nov. 28).

The RSFD technology, now branded as DDR Madeena, stands for Direct Digital Radiography, with “Madeena” representing the spirit of Made-in-Indonesia.

Professor Suparta recounted the licensing challenges during DDR Madeena’s commercialization process amid the COVID-19 pandemic through the TFRIC-19 program in 2021.

“In 2020, RSFD was included among 40 technologies to mitigate COVID-19 risks. However, its downstream process was delayed when BPPT merged into the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in 2022,” he explained.

Since 2022, DDR Madeena’s commercialization has been continued by PT Madeena Karya Indonesia, which secured a distribution permit as a domestic medical device (AKD) from the Ministry of Health (No. 21501220581, issued on Nov. 17, 2022) for its Medical Image Digitizer (MMD) product, under the trade name Madeena X-Ray Medical Diagnostic Equipment.

Additionally, DDR Madeena has earned a Domestic Content Level (TKDN) certificate with a score of 57.62% and is listed in the national e-catalog. Thus, government-funded procurements (APBN, APBD, or other public funds) are mandated to purchase this product.

“With this achievement, my duty as an academic and researcher to oversee the commercialization of research results is complete,” Professor Suparta remarked.

To enhance user confidence, beta testing, and teleradiology were conducted to validate the quality of the domestically produced device against international standards.

PT Madeena Karya Indonesia facilitated beta testing involving human volunteers at the Pratama Clinic, managed by the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (FK Undiksha), Singaraja, Bali.

Results confirmed that DDR Madeena successfully generated readable thorax and extremities radiographic images, earning FK Undiksha’s recommendation for safe use in hospitals, primary healthcare centers, and clinics.

The DDR Madeena’s comprehensive features include lead knock-down room radiation protection, a DICOM viewer, a PACS archiving system, and teleradiology capabilities. These enable radiologists to transmit and read radiographic images remotely.

This aligns with Indonesia’s digital health transformation goals outlined in Health Law No. 17 of 2023 and Government Regulation No. 24 of 2024.

“This tool significantly enhances accessible healthcare services across the country, provided there is internet and cloud data storage connectivity,” Professor Suparta stated.

The system, developed by PT Madeena Karya Indonesia and branded as the Madeena Health Care System (MHCS), aims to optimize Indonesia’s limited 2,200 radiologists. The MHCS system could eventually adopt AI-based diagnostic tools.

Professor Suparta expressed hope for the government’s commitment to supporting domestic products like DDR Madeena through gradual production, continuous monitoring, and improvements.

“The device supports health screenings, MCUs, emergency services, and diagnoses of TB, chronic pulmonary diseases (COPD), and cancer. It may also be used for pediatric examinations, such as assessing physical growth in stunted children,” he explained.

Professor Suparta encouraged companies and organizations concerned with public health to participate in DDR Madeena’s production and installation through health-focused Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs or joint radiography service ventures in clinics and hospitals.

“Hopefully, UGM can develop more progressive and disruptive strategies to ensure academic research translates into societal applications, driving the national economy,” he concluded.

Uphe Angelia Maitriani made history as the youngest graduate at the bachelor and applied bachelor graduation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic year period I at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Thursday (Nov. 28).

The Actuarial Science graduate from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) completed her undergraduate degree at the age of 20 years, 3 months, and 9 days.

In comparison, the average age of the 1,754 undergraduate graduates was 22 years, 6 months, and 16 days.

Moreover, Maitriani completed her studies in just 3 years and 2 months, while the average undergraduate study period is 4 years and 4 months. She explained that her success is partly due to her early start in education.

“In high school, I was in an accelerated class. I also started university in 2021 and graduated in under 4 years, so it was quicker,” Maitriani said on Friday (Nov. 22).

During her academic journey, Maitriani stated that she didn’t face significant difficulties, even though she was one of the youngest students in her cohort. On the contrary, the one-year age difference with most of her peers often became a source of lighthearted jokes.

As the second of three children who moved from Pekanbaru, Riau, Maitriani received full support from her family.

Though neither of her parents holds a university degree—her father is a private employee, and her mother is a homemaker—they always encouraged Maitriani to do her best.

“My parents aren’t college graduates, but they fully support all their children’s education. I wasn’t pressured, but I was always motivated to give my best,” she said.

Maitriani received the Marga Pembangunan Jaya Scholarship in her third year through UGM’s online system, Simaster. With a final GPA of 3.94, Maitriani proved that focus and effective study strategies are key to success. She has a unique study method.

“I like taking notes on paper during class, not on gadgets. When I need to review, it helps me avoid distractions,” Maitriani said.

Since her first semester, she had already laid out an academic strategy, including when to take courses, do internships, complete KKN, and write her thesis. This planning allowed her to complete all stages of her studies efficiently.

Additionally, she avoided the habit of staying up late to stay focused.

“Don’t make it a habit to stay up late while studying,” Maitriani advised.

One of Maitriani’s major achievements was her thesis, “Optimal Retention of Quota-share Reinsurance by Minimizing Value at Risk and Maximizing Insurance Company Utility Expectation.”

This research reflected her understanding of complex actuarial concepts and demonstrated her contribution to the insurance field.

“This thesis discusses how insurance companies can determine the optimal proportion of risk to reinsure,” she explained.

With her dedication and achievements, Maitriani inspires other students to achieve success through careful planning and strong determination. She hopes other students will not be afraid to dream big and will dare to set strategies early on.

“Graduating early is just a matter of strategy,” she concluded.

The UGM Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) has launched an accelerator program to promote the downstream of academic innovations, in collaboration with Volantis Technology, to support academics bringing their innovations to market.

The Dean of FMIPA UGM, Professor Kuwat Triyana, explained that this collaboration with the accelerator was designed to overcome the challenges of implementing research.

“We know that many innovative products in the faculty are funded with billions of rupiah, but there is no pathway to deliver these innovations to society. This is one of our efforts to build an ecosystem for downstream innovative products,” the dean said during Friday’s Jogja Innovator Summit at FMIPA UGM (Oct. 18).

He mentioned that UGM currently has 35 spin-off companies and 30 technologies ready to be developed. Collaboration with industry is expected to incubate these innovations, generating new economic outputs.

“The synergy between Volantis and the university creates a significant entity. The university’s success heavily relies on industrialization, either through startups or collaborations with industry,” Dean Triyana added.

He expressed gratitude for the university’s support in promoting the downstream of academic research at FMIPA UGM through the UGM Science Technopark (STP UGM), which serves as a hub for research and development.

This program was specifically designed to connect innovators with industries needing technology-based solutions.

Professor Sang Kompiang Wirawan, Secretary of the UGM Directorate of Business Development, noted that the FMIPA UGM accelerator program could potentially focus research on industrial needs.

“Innovations that begin at the university must have a clear path toward industrial application. Although we’ve established 30 spin-off companies, there’s still much room for improvement,” Secretary Wirawan stated.

He acknowledged several challenges that make it difficult for research results to enter the market, including a lack of industry-oriented research. Many studies are conducted solely for academic development, without producing marketable products.

“Even if there are products, research typically focuses on micro-scale production, which presents new challenges when scaled up for mass production. Therefore, it’s important for academics to align their research focus with the needs of industry and society,” Secretary Wirawan explained.

Another challenge is the lack of strong connections between universities and industry. Building industry trust in research products takes work.

“There are high opportunities, but also high risks. Building industry trust in just one or two meetings is difficult. Convincing them that a research product has market potential is challenging because the mindset is entirely different,” Secretary Wirawan added.

Bachtiar Rifai, Founder of Volantis, echoed this sentiment. Volantis, as an accelerator and technology support company, was established to bridge the gap between academia and industry. He noted that Yogyakarta is Indonesia’s largest academic hub but lacks a strong industrial base.

“It’s like having a gold mine that hasn’t been dug. So, we’re here as a startup to bridge academia and industry,” Rifai said.

Rifai explained that the FMIPA UGM accelerator program will be conducted in several stages. It will begin with an innovation activation phase in which each department proposes business ideas or innovations ready for incubation.

The selected startups will then be connected with relevant industries.

“Our target is to launch ten startups within one year. In the third or final stage, we will hold a demo day, inviting national and international investors,” Rifai added.

Two energy-efficient cars created by Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students won first place at the 2024 Energy-Efficient Car Contest (KMHE) held at Ancol Carnival Circuit, Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, Jakarta, from Oct. 5 to 10, 2024.

The Semar UGM team triumphed in Prototype and Urban Concept categories, beating 60 teams from 41 universities across Indonesia.

In the Electric Motor Prototype category, Semar UGM presented its best creation, the Semar Proto 3.2. The Semar Proto UGM team consisted of Adeeb Faiz Ataullah Lubis (Engineering), Rosavira Donel (Engineering), Ahmad Baiquni Pilar Bakrani (Mathematics and Natural Sciences), Nicholas Evandra Pratama (Engineering), Fathiyah Audyna Ramadhani (Mathematics and Natural Sciences), Muhammad Zain Rozikin (Engineering), and Muhammad Iqbal Samhari (Engineering).

Team member Adeeb Faiz Ataullah Lubis shared that Semar UGM’s success was not solely due to the hard work of the competing team members but also thanks to the strong collaboration within the entire Semar UGM community, which remained resilient.

“During the competition, we scored 938.38 points and eventually secured first place,” said Lubis during an online interview on Tuesday (Oct. 15).

A similar success occurred in the Urban Electric Motor category, where Semar UGM entered the ‘Semar Urban Electric 1.0.’

The team, comprising Gregorius Haposan Purba (Mathematics and Natural Sciences), Hans Tobias Sihombing (Engineering), Avatar Fawwazthana Susatyo (Engineering), Renaldi Adha (Engineering), Muhammad Ghani Prayatna (Engineering), Nathaniel Benelisha (Engineering), and Ahmad Mauluddin Huda (Mathematics and Natural Sciences), won first place with a score of 298.3 points.

Hans Tobias Sihombing, who also serves as Semar UGM’s General Manager, expressed hope that this achievement would inspire Semar UGM to continue innovating and creating.

“We hope to bring pride to UGM in other national and international competitions,” he stated.

The energy-efficient car contest, themed “Energy Efficiency for the Nation,” is organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology through the Indonesian Talent Development Center (BPTI).

This year, KMHE participants were tasked with creating energy-efficient vehicles in two categories: Prototype and Urban Concept.

The event also serves as proof of students’ creative and innovative work, demonstrating the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program.

KMHE is part of the talent development initiative by the Ministry of Education, focusing on research and innovation.

The competition aims to address future energy challenges and raise public awareness about energy-saving efforts, promoting the creation of environmentally friendly vehicles.

Energy-efficient vehicles are not merely a trend but a necessity that must be realized now and in the future.
