The wildfire in Los Angeles, Southern California, United States (US), has been raging since Jan. 7. It has yet to be extinguished and continues to spread due to strong winds.

Local authorities have evacuated more than 180,000 people, and the fire has claimed the lives of at least 28 people, destroyed thousands of homes, and burned tens of thousands of hectares of land.

Recently, another wildfire occurred north of Los Angeles, consuming 8,000 hectares of land and prompting the evacuation of more than 19,000 people.

Professor Priyono Suryanto, a professor at the Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, stated that the forest fires in Los Angeles warn the global community about the real impacts of climate change and global warming caused by deforestation.

“The forest fires in California cannot be understood from a single perspective. The factors are not isolated but are an accumulation of complex issues in ultra-modern life,” said Professor Suryanto on Friday (Jan. 24).

He explained that natural infrastructure such as rivers, tributaries, hill performance, and habitat space is often neglected in modern life. Instead, modern infrastructure is built with the disregard of natural infrastructure.

Yet, proper forest management and forestry practices that restore the balance of life are crucial.

“As long as the rate of deforestation remains unchecked, and rehabilitation efforts are not accelerated, we are, in full awareness, awaiting ‘nature’s verdict’ through disasters like this,” he remarked.

He further added that forest fires and other disasters, such as floods and landslides, indicate that the harmony between humans and nature is imbalanced.

“The increasing frequency and variety of natural disasters should serve as a clear alarm for us to return to living in harmony with the universe,” he emphasized.

The Faculty of Forestry lecturer also urged the public, the government, and private sectors to support climate change mitigation efforts to maintain the balance between humans and forests.

“A new global awareness is needed that promotes global humanitarian actions, such as ecological charity. The ecological charity has been largely marginalized and, in extreme cases, completely ignored; when it does exist, it is only on a small scale,” said Professor Suryanto, the Chair of the Indonesian Agroforestry Society (MAFI).

Professor Suryanto explained that ecological charity goes beyond land rehabilitation programs or reforestation efforts. It should be expanded to include architectural designs that ensure the growth and development of natural instruments such as forests, rivers, and other natural habitat spaces.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) inaugurated 859 new engineers on Tuesday (Jan. 14).

The new engineers come from the Faculty of Engineering (727), Faculty of Forestry (70), and Faculty of Animal Science (62). With the addition of 727 new graduates, the Faculty of Engineering has successfully produced 4,281 engineers to date.

The Faculty of Forestry, with the addition of 70 new graduates, has produced 374 engineers, while the Faculty of Animal Science, with 62 new engineers, has produced 747 engineers. In total, UGM has successfully produced 5,402 engineers.

Professor Selo, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, stated that with the inauguration of engineers by UGM and the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), the graduates can now truly be considered engineers when having just a Bachelor of Engineering degree felt incomplete.

“But with today’s inauguration, they are officially engineers because they are also inaugurated with PII,” he said at Grha Sabha Pramana.

Professor Selo did not say much on this occasion. He simply reminded everyone of the meaningful words in the Gadjah Mada hymne and the PII hymne.

“It says to serve, to uphold culture for the glory of the archipelago. Then there’s the PII hymne, and we are all Indonesian engineers needed by this country,” he explained.

Once again, he congratulated the newly inaugurated engineers. The UGM engineering graduates are the pride of UGM and the pride of Indonesia, bearing a great responsibility to bring this nation toward becoming a developed country.

“As engineers, we will certainly face many challenges ahead, not only technical challenges related to engineering but also non-technical challenges that can sometimes be even more difficult to overcome,” he added.

Several officials attended the inauguration of the new engineers, including Teguh Haryono, the Secretary General of PII; Santi Sirat, the Executive Director of PII; and the Deans and Vice Deans of the Faculties of Engineering, Forestry, and Animal Science.

In his speech, Teguh Haryono conveyed that Indonesia’s grand vision for 2045 is to make industry one of the main pillars determining the nation’s competitiveness.

He said technological advancement, strengthening manufacturing capacity, and developing superior human resources are key to achieving this vision.

“We, as engineers, have a strategic role in integrating technological innovation with societal needs,” he stated.

In Haryono’s view, engineers are agents of change who can bridge the gap between academic potential and practical applications in the industrial world.

The triple helix model, consisting of academia, industry, and government, must be continuously strengthened to create an ecosystem that supports industrial transformation.

“In this context, UGM has demonstrated its outstanding commitment to producing high-quality engineers ready to contribute to various sectors,” he explained.

“According to the data we received, UGM has produced approximately 5,402 engineers, and across Indonesia, there are currently around 28,000 engineers, with UGM contributing the most among the 45 universities that offer the Professional Engineering Education Program (PSBPI).”

Students from the Forest Management Program, Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, carried out the 2024 Tree Planting event on Thursday (Dec. 19) as part of UGM’s 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum celebrations.

A total of 7,500 seedlings were planted in the UGM Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) located in Tlogotuwung Village, Tuwung Hamlet, Randublatung District, Blora Regency, Central Java Province.

The tree planting event, “One Tree, A Thousand Benefits: Greening the Earth for a Sustainable Homeland,” aimed to restore ecosystems and preserve nature through tree planting to support environmental sustainability.

“This activity, attended by almost 300 participants, mostly from the 2023 cohort, is expected to be a learning and research platform for students as a future asset, particularly in the workforce,” said Dr. Winastuti Dwi Atmanto, the supervising lecturer, Friday (Dec. 27).

Dr. Atmanto explained that the 2024 Tree Planting event by the UGM Faculty of Forestry encompassed land preparation, seedling production, and planting.

The planting took place in nine blocks within the KHDTK UGM area in Getas Village. Each block contained various types of seedlings that would serve as boundary plants and filler plants.

“The seedlings used in this planting are nurtured by the 2023 cohort from the Faculty of Forestry and the Forest Management Program, and the nurturing process has been ongoing since March,” she explained.

She added that the tree seedlings planted included 984 Casuarina equisetifolia (beach she-oak), 1,313 Casuarina junghuhniana (mountain she-oak), 671 Mimusops elengi (Spanish cherry), 97 Swietenia mahagoni (mahogany), 914 Artocarpus heterophyillus (jackfruit), 274 Syzygium polyanthum (Indonesian bay leaf), 264 Hopea odorata (merawan), and 81 Eucalyptus

Other species included 60 Pouteria campechiana (canistel), 314 Sterculia foetida (peanut tree), 475 Pometia pinnata(matoa), 103 Anacardium occidentale (cashew), and 63 Tamarindus indica (tamarind).

Additionally, 12 Durio zibethinus (durian), 17 Sapindus rarak (soapberry), 2 Terminalia catappa (tropical almond), 20 Samanea saman (rain tree), 2 Annona muricata (soursop), and 11 Adenanthera pavonina (red sandalwood) were also planted during the event.

She further explained that collected seeds were sown in seed beds, a method used to grow seeds with optimal nutrients before being transplanted. In addition to self-maintained seedlings, Perum Perhutani donated 1,500 teak (Tectona grandis) and 1,000 Indigofera seedlings.

“The seedlings were obtained by gathering seeds from fruiting trees and also through contributions from participants who brought seedlings from their respective regions after the semester break,” Dr. Atmanto added.

Earlier, the seedlings were nurtured on land owned by Dr. Winastuti in Yogyakarta. The Tree Planting Committee then transported them to the planting site on Dec. 6, 2024, using two pick-up trucks.

During the planting event, participants were divided into several teams to plant the seedlings across nine blocks.

The planting began with the staking of boundary plants, with planting distances of 1 m × 1 m for Indigofera seedlings, 2 m × 2 m, and 3 m × 3 m for other filler plants.

The event was attended by Dr. Dwiko Budi Permadi, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Rohman, a UGM Faculty of Forestry lecturer, and representatives from the Ngawi Forest Management Unit (KPH).

Seven lecturers from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have been included in the World’s Top 2 Percent Scientist 2024 list, released by Stanford University and Elsevier.

The seven UGM lecturers are Professor Abdul Rohman from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Muh Aris Marfai from the Faculty of Geography, Professor Ahmad Maryudi from the Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Ganjar Alfian from the Vocational College, Dr. Eka Noviana from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Dr. Muhammad Akhsin Muflikhun from the Faculty of Engineering, and Professor Jumina from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

From the list of the world’s most influential scientists, 150 scientists from Indonesia made it.

Those categorized as influential scientists are selected based on the impact of their research and the citation of their scientific works in academia, particularly those that are frequently cited or serve as references.

Professor Aris Marfai expressed gratitude for being among the top 2 percent of the world’s most influential scientists. According to him, this achievement is both a reflection and a motivation to contribute more to research and public service.

“Certainly, this can be used as a reflection and motivation for us to contribute and serve the broader community through the utilization and development of scientific knowledge,” said Professor Marfai on Sunday (Sep. 22).

The professor, who currently heads the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), has published extensively in the field of geography, particularly on geomorphology, disaster management, geospatial information, and coastal areas.

“Over 300 publications have been produced, including international journals, national journals, books, book chapters, teaching materials, and seminar proceedings,” he explained.

Based on a Google Scholar search, Professor Marfai mentioned that his top 15 publications are reputable international journals with citation data ranging between 150 and 250 citations per publication.

“According to Google Scholar, the total citations for all my publications have reached 5,713. Most of these citations come from foreign publications,” he explained.

For Professor Marfai, this recognition is not a goal but a consequence of continuous dedication and commitment to knowledge for the benefit of society.

Professor Ahmad Maryudi expressed a similar sentiment and was pleased to be included in the list. According to him, many indicators are used to compile the list, with the number of publications being just one of them.

“A crucial indicator is how much our works influence other research worldwide, as reflected in how often our works are referenced or cited. So, the ranking is truly based on how frequently our works impact other researchers,” he said.

Professor Maryudi noted that 32,813 researchers were included in the list for the subfield of forestry, and he is ranked 201 globally.

“Research is my identity. This recognition will certainly motivate me to continue producing valuable research. Not all research can be applied directly,” said Professor Maryudi, who focuses on political and policy research in forestry and the environment, particularly on actors and power relations.

As the only female among the seven UGM lecturers included in the list, Dr. Eka Noviana openly admitted that she was surprised to find her name on the list, especially since she is at the early stage of her research career.

“It is an honor for me to be included in this list. As an early career researcher, I feel that I am still far from being an influential researcher. I hope that I can continue to grow in that direction in the future,” she humbly stated.

Dr. Noviana mentioned that most of her publications focus on the development of paper-based test devices for rapid and low-cost diagnostics that are easy for users to operate.

Dr. Noviana noted that she has received 1,615 citations from other researchers from this research.

“Many citations come from abroad because the field of paper-based analytical devices is popular among researchers from Brazil, Italy, Thailand, and Japan,” she explained.

Meanwhile, Professor Abdul Rohman stated that over the past five years, he has produced much research and publications related to the halal analysis of food and cosmetic products, which have been widely cited in international journals.

On the other hand, Professor Jumina has conducted extensive research and published extensively on the synthesis of drug compounds, testing their activity as anti-cancer agents and validating their mechanisms through molecular docking. He has published 149 international papers indexed in Scopus.

“The number of citations for my international papers indexed by Scopus is 1,326, with a total of 1,766 citations from both international and national journals. Most of the citations are related to drug development and calixarenes,” he stated.

Dr. Muhammad Akhsin Muflikhun noted that he has received 797 citations in Scopus-indexed international journals, while Google Scholar records 1,013 citations. Most of the citations stem from his publications on composite manufacturing and technology, additive manufacturing, and macro-micro-nano manufacturing.

As for Dr. Ganjar Alfian, he has published extensively on the application of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things (IoT) in fields such as manufacturing, healthcare, supply chains, and transportation.

According to Scopus data, his publications have received 1,903 citations to date.

“The most frequently cited articles are related to applied artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Additionally, almost all the articles I have published are cited by authors affiliated with overseas institutions,” he stated.

Dr. Alfian hopes that this achievement will further motivate him to continue conducting more applied research and producing publications in line with the vision of UGM’s Vocational School.

“The hope is that these results can be directly applied and benefit the wider community,” he emphasized.

The World’s Top 2 Percent Scientists 2024 is a scientific ranking system based on an analysis of citation impact across various scientific fields using data from the Scopus database.

This ranking regularly selects 100,000 scientists from across the globe who work in various academic institutions worldwide.

The rich cultural heritage of Yogyakarta (DIY) extends beyond its arts and traditions, encompassing significant trees with historical and philosophical importance tied to local customs.

However, public awareness of these culturally significant trees is limited, partly due to the lack of information available. In addition to cultural trees, several rare tree species in Yogyakarta have been prioritized for conservation at the provincial level.

To address these challenges, a team from UGM’s Student Creativity Program in Innovative Work (PKM-KI) has developed the Integrated System of Tree Information (ISTI) tool that detects tree disturbances using sound and vibration sensors.

The development of ISTI was funded by the Directorate of Learning and Student Affairs (Belmawa) of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The team is composed of three students from the Faculty of Forestry and two from the Faculty of Engineering. It is led by Safiera Anindya Syaafiyana from the Forestry program, with members Muhammad Hisyam (Electrical Engineering), Perwira Akhdan Zumarsyah (Information Technology), Septia Maharani Sinaga (Forestry), and Zaini Silvia Aryani (Forestry).

Syaafiyana explained that the tool integrates software and hardware to serve as an information medium for cultural and rare trees in Yogyakarta.

The team also developed a website that is accessible at (http://app.isti.online) containing articles, distribution maps, and details about cultural and rare trees like the Mentaok and Sawo Kecik.

“Location points also complement the distribution of tree species on a digital map,” Syaafiyana said in a statement to reporters on Thursday (Aug. 22).

The tool can also remotely monitor these culturally significant and rare trees. It functions as a detector for illegal logging and can identify disturbances to the trees using sound and vibration sensors.

Additionally, the detector sends signals to nearby residents if a tree is cut down or dies, and the website provides real-time updates.

“Our team worked cohesively, and every member contributed their expertise based on their respective academic backgrounds,” Syaafiyana noted.

A team member, Muhammad Hisyam, hopes this innovation will significantly benefit environmental and cultural conservation efforts in Yogyakarta.

“Early detection can help prevent illegal logging, making conservation efforts for these valuable trees more effective,” he emphasized.

Hisyam added that the development of ISTI’s information platform on the website is expected to become a vital reference for the public and researchers interested in Yogyakarta’s biological and cultural wealth.

Universitas Gadjah Mada has recently inaugurated 699 new engineers. These new engineers hail from three faculties: the Faculty of Engineering (592), the Faculty of Forestry (70), and the Faculty of Animal Science (37).

The inauguration ceremony occurred at Grha Sabha Pramana in Bulaksumur on Tuesday, Jul. 16, 2024.

It was attended by Professor Selo, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Professor Budi Guntoro, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science; and Dr. Sigit Sunarta, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry.

Several other officials were also in attendance, including M. Erry Sugiharto, the Director of Human Resources at PT Pertamina (Persero), Bambang Goeritno, the Secretary General of the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII) Central Office, and Dr. Ammy Nurwati, the Director of Ecosystem Management and Restoration (BPPE) at the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation, Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

Representing the deans, Professor Budi Guntoro stated that the number of graduates from the Professional Engineering Program (PSPPI) across universities offering engineering education is still far from the ideal number needed to face global competition.

This is especially crucial as the mobilization of professional engineers to meet the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) demands will culminate in 2025.

He emphasized that if significant efforts are not made to fill the engineering shortage, the number of engineers in Indonesia will likely not meet the target by the end of the AEC in 2025. The minimum requirement is at least 1 million engineers.

With the current low numbers, the Republic of Indonesia will undoubtedly face significant challenges in global competition.

The only solution is to increase awareness of globalization among professionals, practitioners, educators, and the Indonesian Engineers Association to collectively recognize the importance of adhering to Law No. 11 of 2014.

“This will help increase the number of engineers in Indonesia, enabling them to meet domestic needs and compete globally,” he said.

Meanwhile, Erry Sugiharto, one of the graduates representing the recipients of professional engineer certificates, stated that recognition of expertise is an essential aspect of an engineer’s career journey.

Having official certification as an engineer is a testament to one’s integrity in meeting established competency standards.

“This is not merely a formality but a guarantee that we are ready to assume the significant responsibilities that come with the engineering profession,” he said.

Sugiharto noted that data shows Indonesia has significantly fewer engineers than neighboring countries like Vietnam and South Korea, with only 2,670 engineers per million people.

In comparison, Vietnam has 9,000, and South Korea has 25,000 engineers per million people.

He also highlighted the Indonesian government’s aggressive roadmap towards becoming an advanced nation through various strategic projects across the country, which underscores the critical role of engineers in facilitating and delivering on these initiatives.

Additionally, in the era of Industry 5.0, which demands the utilization of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and machine learning, engineers must possess high skill sets and learning agility to adapt and innovate quickly without limits.

“This is our opportunity to build credibility and collaborate inclusively to support industrial advancement,” he remarked.

Dr. Ammy Nurwati shared a similar sentiment. She stated that as Indonesia aims for “Golden Indonesia 2045,” the demand for engineers will increase in various fields, including industrial engineering and construction, requiring technical expertise and management skills.

In forestry and agro-related fields, the engineering profession is expected to play a role in maintaining and even enhancing productivity and the sustainability of forest ecosystems, adhering to engineering ethics, scientific knowledge, and technology.

“Moreover, engineers are expected to have outstanding character, ethics, integrity, and responsibility in all their decisions and work,” Dr. Nurwati explained, representing the newly inaugurated engineers.

Bambang Goeritno reminded the audience that professionalism embodies a professional’s behavior, expertise, and quality. All professional actions are governed by a code of ethics.

“Thus, a professional engineer is someone who fully and comprehensively masters science and technology, has experience, and upholds professional ethics,” he added.

Several faculties at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) are offering free breakfast for students during the final exam period this June.

Faculties providing free breakfast include the Faculty of Biology (Biology UGM), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM), Faculty of Geography (Geography UGM), Faculty of Law (FH UGM), Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM), Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH UGM), Faculty of Forestry (Forestry UGM), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM), and Faculty of Agriculture (Agriculture UGM).

UGM Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, welcomed the free breakfast program initiated by the faculty leadership for students during the final exam period.

She stated that this program supports students’ nutritional needs and aligns with UGM’s efforts to achieve SDG number 2: ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture.

“I think this demonstrates UGM’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the SDGs, as well as ensuring students’ smooth study experience during exams,” Vice-Rector Udasmoro said on Friday (Jun. 28).

Dean of FMIPA UGM, Professor Kuwat Triyana, mentioned that his faculty provides around 250 free breakfast portions daily, collaborating with the FMIPA UGM Women’s Association.

“We provide 250 portions every day,” Dean Triyana said.

Similarly, the Dean of Biology UGM, Professor Budi Daryono, shared that providing free breakfast during exams has been a practice at the Faculty of Biology since the end of 2022.

“Since December 2022 until now, the Faculty of Biology has been giving free breakfast during mid-term and final exams to 200 undergraduate and postgraduate students,” he revealed.

The free breakfast program has also been running for the past two weeks at FIB UGM. About 200 rice boxes are prepared and placed on tables in the central courtyard area, making them easily accessible to all passing students.

“We provide free breakfast two to three times a week,” said Susanti, the faculty’s staff member.

Susanti said the menu varies daily, from vegetable rice cakes to fried chicken. Free breakfast is available starting at 7 a.m.

“We provide 200 boxes daily, sourced from one of the vendors in the faculty canteen,” Susanti explained.

When asked about the reason behind the faculty’s free breakfast program, Susanti mentioned that it helps ensure students’ well-being.

Additionally, Agriculture UGM runs a similar program to help students focus on their exams. This program, named “Pondasi UTS,” aims to meet students’ nutritional needs as a proactive step by the campus to foster a healthy and productive learning environment.

The Pondasi UTS program provides 200 portions during the final exam period from June 19 to July 2, 2024. Dr. Dyah Weny Respatie, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at Agriculture UGM, mentioned that this program fosters student empathy and enhances social awareness among alumni and donors.

“Every day during exams, students can receive free breakfast coupons. Coupons are distributed directly at the faculty’s canteen by showing their exam cards,” she said.

Agus Sudarwinto, Head of the Administration Office at Agriculture UGM, mentioned that this program partners with the Agriculture UGM’s Healthy Canteen, Karitoru, IMB, and Korpagama as breakfast providers.

Sheila Adriyani (20), a student from the Arabic Literature program, class of 2022, expressed her happiness with the freebreakfast program. It helps students avoid rushing to find breakfast around their dorms before heading to class.

“It’s beneficial for those of us who haven’t had a chance to eat breakfast,” said Adriyani, a student from Rokan Hulu, Riau Province.

Sofira (21), a Communication Science student, also appreciated the free breakfast program, especially with the varied menu.

“Sometimes I’m confused about what to have for breakfast and often skip it. But with this free breakfast, I don’t have to worry anymore,” Sofira said.

Similarly, Icha (21) found the free breakfast program very helpful.

“Usually, I eat after the exam because I don’t have time to buy breakfast. Now, I don’t have to worry about breakfast anymore during exams. The menu is also delicious,” said the International Relations student.

Despite some exams being take-home assignments, many students prefer to be on campus to work on them. The breakfast menu provided by Fisipol UGM varies daily to prevent students from getting bored with the same options.

Bryan Jovi Adonian Simarmata, a student of Fisheries Technology at Agriculture UGM, found the free breakfast program very beneficial.

“Not only does it save time that I usually spend looking for breakfast, but it also ensures I get good nutrition before exams,” Simarmata said.

The UGM Faculty of Forestry (Forestry UGM) organizes a Morning Breakfast program to support students facing the final semester exams.

Dr. Daryono Prehaten, Secretary of the undergraduate Forestry program, stated that the Morning Breakfast event is an annual agenda that started in 2023. This event aims to assist Forestry students to perform better during exams.

“We organize this to provide food for students who do not have the opportunity to have breakfast at home or in their dorms so that they remain in prime condition during exams,” Dr. Prehaten said at UGM on Thursday (Jun. 27).

The Morning Breakfast program for students runs for a week, from Jun. 24 to 28, 2024. Forestry UGM prepares 80 portions of breakfast daily, and students can enjoy their breakfast in the hallway of the IFFLC building.

Dr. Prehaten explained that the Morning Breakfast program is a form of care from the faculty for their students. With adequate nutrition and a relaxed atmosphere, it is hoped that students can tackle the exams more optimally and achieve satisfying results.

“Thanks to the Forestry Students’ Parents Association (Potmahut) batches 2021, 2022, and 2023 for their support in organizing this event,” he said.

According to him, Potmahut’s support in this activity is a tangible manifestation of parents’ active participation in supporting the teaching and learning process at Forestry UGM.

He mentioned that this event aligns with Forestry UGM’s efforts to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 2 (zero hunger) and SDG 4 (quality education).

Hilal Robbani, a forestry student from the 2021 cohort, shared his testimony about the program, deeming it beneficial for students.

“My friends and I are grateful for this breakfast activity. The program aids in the thinking process during exams. Of course, it also helps us save our monthly allowance. We hope this becomes a routine, and it would be great if the portions and menu could be increased, maybe with the addition of fruit or milk,” he said with a smile.

Hundreds of students from the UGM Faculty of Forestry (Forestry UGM), members of the Forest Cultivation Student Association (Himaba), have carried out the Forester in Action (FIA) initiative by planting over 2,500 tree saplings in Tanggulangin, Kebumen, Central Java.

The saplings include 2,000 mangrove plants and 500 casuarina plants to prevent coastal abrasion and erosion.

Rakha Brilian Putra, the committee chair, mentioned that this tree planting activity is part of Himaba’s community service initiatives, which include collaborative research, community service, and fostering camaraderie among foresters.

“The planting of mangroves and casuarinas is the main activity in Forester in Action. The selection of casuarina trees this time was requested by the local community, farmers’ groups, and fishermen,” Putra said in a statement to reporters on Monday (Jun 10).

Before the planting activity, the students had been growing casuarina saplings since December 2023. The seeds used were collected from Mliwis Beach, Kebumen. In mid-December, the Himaba team sowed the casuarina seeds, and by early January, the seedlings were transplanted.

Mangrove seeds, sourced from Lembupurwo, Kebumen, began their preparation in January, with the students setting up seedbeds using mud from Baros Beach and fish ponds.

“We did this to match the growing environment to their natural habitat so that the mangroves could grow well and uniformly,” he said.

Once the saplings were ready for planting, they were nurtured in nurseries until they were suitable for the field. The casuarina saplings underwent selection to ensure straight growth and to avoid ball root issues, which helped ensure their survival when planted in the field.

Before the planting activity, students and the community collaborated to move the saplings and mark the planting blocks.

“The moving of saplings was assisted by the mangrove conservation group and the fishermen’s group from Tanggulangin Village,” he added.

Dr. Winastuti Dwi Atmanto, a supervising lecturer from the Faculty of Forestry, explained that tree planting encourages students to apply silviculture knowledge to sustain coastal ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and maintain overall ecosystem functions for long-term human and environmental benefits.

“In addition to tree planting, students also held a dialogue session to discuss potential developments in Tanggulangin Village to boost the village’s economy. This dialogue was attended by the Klirong district head, the village head, Tanggulangin village officials, and residents,” she said.
