Immigrants have become one of the social issues emerging in various countries. Conflicts, wars, and poverty are among the factors behind the high number of immigrants within a community.

Addressing this issue, Mumtaz Khan Chopan captures the stories of these immigrants through art.

During a parallel session of The 20th International Association for the Study of Forced Migration Conference 2025 on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at UGM’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), Chopan shared how his work is based on his personal experience as an immigrant.

His work in the Museum of Shredded Memories explores the emotional situations experienced by forced immigrant groups—those who were forced to leave their homeland when their country became uninhabitable.

Chopan managed to assemble various relics of immigrants, such as destroyed documents, photographs, and abandoned clothing, into an installation that illustrates the horrors and trauma of immigrants.

“I capture their journey memories of moving from one place to another. I made it as chaotic as possible to depict the disorder of the situation,” Chopan explained.

He described an unforgettable feeling shared by nearly all immigrants—the feeling of insecurity, constantly needing shelter, and having to forget everything except their own and their families’ lives.

They were forced to leave their birthplace, separated from relatives, and even had to erase their identity to survive. Chopan, an artist born in Afghanistan who once became an immigrant in Pakistan, has memories deeply connected to his own work.

“I clearly remember when I came home from school, carrying a small notebook, and when I got home, my mother said we were going to Pakistan. I didn’t know anything and left the notebook at home,” Chopan recounted.

At that time, in 1999, Afghanistan was facing a civil conflict with the Taliban. Hundreds of people were killed, and Chopan’s small family was forced to flee to Pakistan. They lived in a refugee camp with 3 million other immigrants.

Gradually, Chopan became interested in art. Unfortunately, as an immigrant, he couldn’t attend art school in Pakistan, so he returned to Afghanistan to study art at Kabul University’s Faculty of Fine Art.

“Many people said I wouldn’t be able to get a job in the art field, even though my interest in art was very strong,” he added.

At one point, Chopan visited one of his cousin’s weddings in Afghanistan. When he got on the bus with a camera in hand, the people around him started to panic and tried to hide Chopan’s camera.

It turned out that at that time, the Taliban were actively searching for and killing journalists or anyone seen carrying a camera. He still remembers the fear and trauma of that moment to this day.

Chopan once worked as an IT and computer expert to find a job. He was quite skilled in that field but felt unfulfilled because he lacked a sense of purpose. He eventually returned to art and came to Indonesia to continue his work.

“Afghanistan doesn’t have an art space as large as Indonesia. I’m happy to be in this country to continue my hobby,” he said.

Although now living in Yogyakarta, Chopan continues to raise awareness of immigrants through his art.

Dr. Suzie Handayani, a lecturer in the Anthropology program at FIB UGM, also appreciates Chopan’s art for successfully portraying the experiences of immigrants through a collection of fragmented memories and relics.

Anyone who sees Chopan’s installations may experience deep sadness and trauma.

According to Dr. Handayani, Chopan’s work seems to draw viewers into a bleak political situation, with no welfare guarantee and silencing of voices.

“I’m impressed by how Chopan never tidies up his work; he leaves it in chaos, reflecting the real emotions of immigrants,” she said.

Forced migration due to war, ethnic and religious conflicts, and natural disasters is a critical issue requiring attention from multiple stakeholders.

According to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), by the end of 2022, 108.4 million people worldwide were forcibly displaced, with 76% being hosted in low- and middle-income countries.

Two-thirds of these refugees and forcibly displaced individuals chose urban areas to seek better economic and social opportunities.

This trend places urban areas at the forefront of the issue, necessitating more focused attention on urban planning and regulations to ensure better, scalable, and sustainable responses to the crisis.

In response to the forced migration issue, the Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), in collaboration with the Resilience Development Initiative Urban Refugees (RDI UREF) Research Group, plans to host the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM) Conference. The event is scheduled to take place from Jan. 20 to 23 at the UGM campus.

The Dean of FIB UGM, Professor Setiadi, stated that the international conference, themed “Forced Displacement in an Urbanizing World,” aims to advance knowledge and activism with a particular focus on urban issues and population displacement, especially in the Asia-Pacific region.

The event will feature contributions from international and local experts, early-career researchers, students, and enthusiasts who will enrich the discussions.

“We hope participants will exchange knowledge from various disciplines related to forced migration and urban management, fostering future collaborations and partnerships,” said Professor Setiadi in a press statement on Friday (Jan. 3).

The dean noted that collaboration with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and other parties could contribute to the development of policy briefs on forced displacement, which could serve as a reference for future governmental policies.

The Asia-Pacific region has seen a significant increase in forced migration alongside regular migration trends. In 2023, the region was home to approximately 14.7 million people under UNHCR’s mandate, including 7 million refugees and asylum seekers, 4.9 million internally displaced persons, and 2.5 million stateless individuals.

“Unfortunately, many developing countries in the region lack adequate resources to respond to refugees’ needs, with limited examples of ideal practices and mechanisms,” Professor Setiadi explained.

In Indonesia, the risk of internal displacement has risen due to vulnerability to natural disasters, rapid urbanization, population growth, and internal conflicts.

According to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Center (IDMC), Indonesia recorded 749,000 internally displaced persons at the end of 2021, including 73,000 displaced by conflict and violence and 155,000 displaced by disasters and environmental factors.

Additionally, according to the April 2024 UNHCR Fact Sheet, Indonesia hosts over 12,000 refugees and asylum seekers registered with UNHCR in several major cities.

The IASFM 2025 Conference offers a diverse program for participants. Pre-conference activities include two workshops designed for students and early-career researchers: Creative Research Methods and Ethics of Conducting Research on Forced Displacement and Design Thinking and Forced Displacement as a Wicked Problem.

During the conference, attendees can participate in plenary sessions, ignite stages, special stages, art installations, and exhibition booths.

The conference will culminate in plenary sessions focusing on three critical topics: Reflections on the Global Agenda for International Migration, (Re)Conceptualizing Urban Displacement and the Right to the City, and Contemporary Approaches to Urban Displacement.

These topics were chosen to explore how migration and displacement to urban areas have evolved over the years.

The main sessions will feature roundtable discussions on regional approaches to urban displacement in the Asia-Pacific region.

Topics include the Bali Process, ASEAN, SAARC, the Pacific Islands Forum, other multilateral collaborations, and issues such as Rohingya displacement and refugee-led movements advocating for the right to the city.

The IASFM 2025 organizers, as part of an advocacy network for refugee management in Indonesia, aim to translate the conference discussions into practical solutions.

It is hoped that IASFM 2025 will contribute significantly to evidence-based policy changes in Indonesia and the broader region.

Gamplong Tourism Village, located in Moyudan District, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region, is widely recognized as a prime destination offering a variety of unique cultural and experiential attractions.

While many are familiar with Studio Alam Gamplong, few realize the huge potential and uniqueness of Gamplong Tourism, particularly through its handicrafts that produce unique products like traditional woven fabrics with distinctive patterns reflecting the beauty of local culture, as well as creatively crafted home accessories and decorations made from natural materials like rattan, bamboo, sand, and natural fibers.

Despite being a fairly popular tourist destination, Gamplong Tourism Village still faces some challenges in its management, one of which is the lack of a clear Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

The absence of an SOP has been an obstacle in managing coordination between the village managers, artisans, and tourists.

As a form of support to help Gamplong become a more professional tourism village, students from the Tourism Program of UGM’s Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM) initiated a discussion forum to draft the SOP involving various parties, including village managers, division heads, and division members.

“This forum discussed several key points, such as standardizing the flow of tourist visits, including guidelines from the reservation process to tourist drop-off, and scheduling activities such as craft-making lessons and enjoying local cuisine,” said Franzeska Aurellia Oenang, a Tourism Program student, in a statement sent to reporters on Monday (Dec. 30).

In discussions with the division heads of Gamplong Tourism Village, Oenang mentioned several major issues, such as the lack of clear work guidelines for each division and the ambiguity of task distribution, especially in welcoming tourists when the number of visitors increases, leading to frequent confusion in implementation.

Additionally, task distribution between divisions also became a focus, with the establishment of clear responsibilities for the homestay, guide, culinary, and marketing divisions and the assurance of effective communication flow to avoid miscommunication.

“Monitoring and evaluation systems were also discussed, including scheduling regular evaluations to assess the effectiveness of the SOP and providing space for tourist feedback to improve service quality,” she explained.

Just as importantly, she added, environmental management and sustainability were also addressed, with the drafting of an SOP to maintain the cleanliness of the tourism village and encourage artisans to use environmentally friendly materials in their products.

“With standardized SOPs, Gamplong Tourism Village is expected to improve the quality of its management, thereby providing a better tourist experience. Furthermore, the SOP is a crucial step in ensuring the sustainability of this tourism village in the future,” she stated.

Oenang reckoned that Gamplong has great potential to continue developing as a tourist destination that entertains and educates.

“Through collaboration between students, managers, and the local community, this village will be even more prepared to compete nationally and internationally,” she explained.

Students from the Tourism Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) have successfully developed a culinary tourism innovation titled “Nitirasa Brayut” in Brayut Village, Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

This program results from three months of intensive collaboration between students, practitioners, and the local community to enrich Brayut Village’s tourism diversification.

Twenty tourists attended the launch of “Nitirasa Brayut” on Friday (Dec. 6). Visitors were invited to join an enjoyable cooking class in the village’s peaceful atmosphere.

Afterward, they could taste the dishes they had prepared with the village community.

Student coordinator Nadine Nabila mentioned that the program offers traditional village food and aims to add value to visitors by involving them in the cooking process.

“We want to offer an authentic experience to tourists, such as learning how to make Legondo, a traditional snack made only during special events,” said Nabila in a statement sent to journalists on Monday (Dec. 16).

“Nitirasa Brayut” is a tangible application of learning from the Praktisi Mengajar Program, a part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative. Over the three months, UGM Tourism students conducted surveys, discussions, and collaborations with the community to design an experiential tourism concept.

“In its implementation, students were directly mentored by lecturers and professional practitioners in the program,” Nabila added.

Ganies Riza Aristya, the Praktisi Mengajar Program coordinator at UGM, praised the collaboration. According to him, the program allows students to gain hands-on experience in the field with the community.

“I think this is an opportunity to bridge the theory learned in class with real-world reality,” he explained.

One of the practitioners, Hannif Andy Al Anshori, added that the Praktisi Mengajar Program encourages students in the Community-Based Tourism course to face real-life case studies in the field. The students not only learn but also contribute to the development of the village.

“Students are here to identify community needs and collaboratively create relevant tourism products,” he said.

Through this innovation, UGM students in the program demonstrate that synergy between education, practitioners, and the community can produce tourism innovations that benefit all parties.

“This program shows the incredible enthusiasm of the community and tourists. We hope that such collaborations can continue and serve as an inspiration for developing community-based tourism,” said Anshori.

The Head of Brayut Village, Darmadi, expressed his appreciation for the program, which has helped create a new variety of culinary-based tourism in Brayut Village. Previously, this village focused primarily on cultural and nature tourism.

“This program innovation adds a unique experience for tourists while still being rooted in local potential,” he concluded.

Professor of Literature and Gender Studies at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM), Wening Udasmoro, received the Remise Des Palmes Académiques award from the French Government on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at UGM’s Central Office.

The award ceremony was attended by the French embassy, university leaders, and the academic community of UGM.

The Remise Des Palmes Académiques is the French government’s highest and oldest academic award.

Historically, this award was first initiated in 1808 by Napoleon I. Over time, the French government has granted the Remise Des Palmes Académiques to academics worldwide who have dedicated themselves to studying French cultural heritage.

According to Fabien Penone, the French Ambassador to Indonesia, ASEAN, and Timor Leste, Professor Udasmoro’s works were deemed worthy of receiving France’s highest academic honor.

“For thirty years, Professor Udasmoro has promoted Francophonie in Indonesia, acting as a bridge between Indonesia and France. You truly deserve this Palmes Académiques award,” said Penone.

Penone also expressed his appreciation for the academic community in Indonesia, stating that Indonesia is a priority for France.

He hopes to strengthen bilateral relations across academic, cultural, economic, and political sectors. One way to do this is by increasing global academic collaboration to exchange cultures and appreciate academic research and studies.

“Professor Udasmoro, in my view, has been deeply involved in scientific activities and maintains a close relationship with France. Therefore, she fully deserves this award,” added Penone.

He hopes Indonesian academics recognize that Indonesia is a major player considered on the international stage, with plenty of global opportunities to develop research and enhance their skills.

Professor Udasmoro expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the recognition.

“It’s an honor. I feel deeply moved and have never imagined this. I dedicate it to UGM, my fellow lecturers, and colleagues who have supported me all this time,” she said.

Throughout her thirty years as an academic in French literature, Professor Udasmoro has produced interdisciplinary studies within the social humanities.

For Professor Udasmoro, studying French culture and literature has become a part of her life. She was raised in a family steeped in culture and the arts from childhood. From there, she became familiar with French songs and films, such as Alain Delon’s films and music by Christophe and Serge Gainsbourg.

Her love for French literature and culture also inspired her thesis, which examined the interpretation of the Javanese myths of Rara Jonggrang and Rara Mendut through Claude Levi-Strauss’ structuralism theory.

Professor Udasmoro’s contributions to advancing knowledge and French culture continue. When the Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française (DELF) was first introduced, she was one of the pioneering examiners.

Her research on literature, gender, sexuality, conflict, media, identity, and discourse conflict analysis frequently cites the works of major French thinkers.

“I consider myself fortunate. At the same time, this is a challenge for me. I hope to contribute more through French studies, which have long anchored world civilization,” Professor Udasmoro stated.

This UGM Vice-Rector also advised academics to continue contributing through their work and research for education and society.

“Never tire of developing yourselves through your works and research, as recognition will come from all directions.”

Yogyakarta, November 15, 2024 – The fact-finding or ad hoc team formed by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences of Universitas Gadjah Mada (FIB UGM) to investigate allegations of plagiarism in the books ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ and ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’ written by Sri Margana et al., has completed its work of gathering facts and evidence regarding the plagiarism allegations. Although the team was established by the Dean of FIB UGM, the university’s leadership has approved the conclusions and recommendations.

The ad hoc team, consisting of six FIB lecturers representing the positions of professors and lecturers outside the History Department of FIB UGM, collected relevant data and facts and called upon the writing team to examine allegations made anonymously and in an insinuative manner on the social media platform Facebook under the account name Peter Carey.

To test the truth of the plagiarism claims, the ad hoc team applied international standards and academic studies on plagiarism as well as the national guidelines set out in Permendikbud No. 17 of 2010 on the Prevention and Handling of Plagiarism in Higher Education. The team took the following steps: collecting references on plagiarism standards, both international and national, and studying the materials related to the allegations attached in a letter from Kepustakaan Populer Gramedia (KPG) dated November 4, 2024.

The team also examined the material in the accused book and compared it with the contents of the book ‘Kuasa Ramalan’ by Peter Carey, first published in 2012 by KPG. Importantly, the team conducted clarifications with the book’s writing team.

To assess the presence of plagiarism, the ad hoc team used several definitions, rules, and regulations on plagiarism from international and national sources, such as The Oxford University, Standard Office of Community Standards, California State San Marcos, ‘Defining Plagiarism: A Literature Review,’ Chapter II Article 2 (1) items a-e of Permendikbud No. 17 of 2010, Law No. 28 of 2014, Permendikbudristek No. 39 of 2021, definitions of verbatim quotations, and the differences in plagiarism perspectives across institutions, countries, and cultures.

Based on the above criteria for plagiarism, the ad hoc team concluded that according to various internationally recognized concepts of plagiarism, the proper citation of sources is key to preventing plagiarism.

The materials provided by KPG and Peter Carey claimed that long verbatim quotations were found in the books ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ and ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik.’ These quotations were considered to have been directly taken from Peter Carey’s book ‘Kuasa Ramalan.’

However, after conducting a thorough examination of ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI,’ it was found that the long quotations in the text were introduced with the phrase “According to Peter Carey…” and were indented with endnotes providing full and detailed citations of Peter Carey’s book ‘Kuasa Ramalan’ in accordance with scholarly citation rules.

Similarly, for ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’, all quotes and references in the book clearly cited ‘Kuasa Ramalan’ by Peter Carey, both within the text in footnotes, and in the bibliography.

It was noted that the long quotations in both books were made because, during the research process, no primary source was found. At that time, ‘Kuasa Ramalan’ was the only reference available regarding Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja, and the authors wished to preserve the integrity of the information from the referenced text.

Based on Law No. 28 of 2014 on Copyright (Copyright Law), an assessment of whether there was a copyright violation must also consider the provisions of the Copyright Law. According to Article 44, paragraph (1) letter a of the Copyright Law, a citation is not considered a copyright violation if the source is properly cited and is used for educational, research, scientific writing, reporting, critique, or review purposes without harming the legitimate interests of the creator or copyright holder.

Although the Copyright Law does not explicitly define “complete citation,” there are three types of citations: body note, footnote, and endnote. The body notes mention the name, year of publication, and page number of the citation, with the full citation appearing in the reference list. Footnotes provide the name, year of publication, title, city of publication, publisher, and page number. Endnotes mention the name, year of publication, and page number.

The ad hoc team’s report stated that the long quotation began with the phrase “According to Peter Carey…” (up to the final quote) and was followed by an endnote. Regardless of the type of citation used, the team concluded that the citation met the requirements of Article 44, paragraph (1) letter a of the Copyright Law.

Based on the above assessments and considerations, the ad hoc team concluded that neither ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ nor ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’ can be categorized as plagiarism.

The team also added that the first and second editions of ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ and the first edition of ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’ did not include the Author’s Foreword and were temporary versions. These editions were withdrawn and destroyed at the request of KPG through a letter dated March 6, 2020, a step acknowledged by KPG based on a letter from the Dean of FIB UGM dated March 11, 2020, as confirmed in KPG’s official statement of November 4, 2024. As such, these versions no longer exist.

Following a thorough review, the ad hoc team concluded that none of the long quotations or parts alleged to be plagiarized remained in the final versions of the books, namely the third edition of ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ and the second edition of ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’.

Nevertheless, the team noted that while both books provided complete source citations, the long quotations could be considered to violate the “proprietary” standard. However, according to Permendikbud No. 17 of 2010 on the Prevention and Handling of Plagiarism in Higher Education, there is no specific regulation regarding the allowed length of quotations in the text.

Although Permendikbud No. 17 of 2010 has been revoked with the enactment of Permendikbudristek No. 39 of 2021 on December 14, 2021, the latter regulation did not exist at the time the books ‘Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI’ and ‘Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik’ were published. Therefore, the evaluation of the books was based on the provisions of Permendikbud No. 17 of 2010.

This is the conclusion delivered by the ad hoc team of FIB UGM.

The Korean Language and Culture Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted the “Women’s Film Festival” as part of the 19th Korean Days event, which took place from Nov. 2 to 10, 2024.

The film festival aims to highlight various women’s issues through Korean cinema and expand students’ and the public’s understanding of the culture and lives of women in Korea.

Held in Room 709 and the auditorium of the UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM), the festival features several well-known films, including Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982 (2019), Sunday Morning in Victoria Park (2010), Before, Now, & Then (2022), and Cart (2014).

The festival opened with a screening of Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982, a South Korean film adapted from the controversial novel by Cho Nam-joo.

The story follows the life of Kim Ji-Young (played by Jung Yu-mi), a stay-at-home mother in her 30s who experiences psychological changes. These changes lead her to start speaking and acting like significant figures from her past, including her mother and a close female friend.

Her husband, Dae-Hyun (played by Gong Yoo), becomes increasingly concerned about Ji-Young’s condition and supports her as she faces the pressures she is experiencing.

Through Ji-Young’s life story, the film addresses various challenges Korean women face in a patriarchal society that restricts their freedom, whether as wives, mothers, or daughters.

Ji-Young grows up in an environment that often undermines her aspirations, imposes high expectations, and disregards her individuality.

Ji-Young’s deteriorating mental health illustrates the effects of the injustices she experiences, reflecting the societal pressures faced by women in South Korea.

This movie has received widespread praise for daring to tackle sensitive issues such as gender inequality and women’s mental health.

It also has raised public awareness and sparked important discussions on women’s rights and mental well-being in Korea.

After the film screening, the event continued with a “Star Talk” session featuring director Kim Ji-Young: Born in 1982, Kim Do-Young, who joined via Zoom.

Kim Do-Young, who began her career in theater and has been active in the film industry for 19 years, shared insights into the creative process and the challenges she faced during the film’s production.

Febriani Elfida Trihtarani moderated and translated the interview. In it, she discussed the relevance of the issues raised in the film and acknowledged that the project had faced significant criticism, especially from conservatives who viewed it as controversial due to its feminist themes.

However, she and the production team remained confident in pushing forward with the film.

“At that time, feminism was a hot topic, and we felt it was the right moment to address it through cinema. We were confident that this film would offer an important perspective despite the challenges,” Kim Do-Young explained.

With screenings and discussions of movies like Kim Ji-Young: Born 1982, “Women’s Film Festival” is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the various issues facing women in Korea while opening up a dialogue on gender inequality, women’s rights, and mental well-being.

Yogyakarta, Nov. 4, 2024 – The UGM Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB UGM) has responded to discussions circulating on social media regarding plagiarism allegations involving lecturers from its Department of History.

The allegations concern the history books “Madiun: Sejarah Politik dan Transformasi Kepemerintahan dari Abad XIV ke Abad XXI” and “Raden Rangga Prawiradirdja III Bupati Madiun 1796-1810: Sebuah Biografi Politik,” authored by Dr. Sri Margana and collaborators. Reports claim that sections of these works are derived from “Kuasa Ramalan” (2019) by Peter Carey.

FIB UGM takes these allegations seriously. In light of the concerns, the faculty leadership has formed a team to conduct a thorough investigation. The investigation results will be disclosed to the public promptly upon completion.
