Many people consume eggs as a popular source of animal protein. The high demand for animal protein correlates with increased egg consumption.

Therefore, clean and disease-free eggs are essential to prevent the spread of diseases that can affect public health, such as typhoid.

“This disease occurs in eggs contaminated with Salmonella bacteria,” said Salma Nur Azizah, a 2022 UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) student, Thursday (Feb. 6).

In response to this issue, Azizah, along with fellow student Mohammad Rizky Zulfahmi, proposed using ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to combat Salmonella bacteria in the layer chicken farming industry.

Azizah explained that UV-C light has the shortest wavelength among other ultraviolet rays. Based on various references they studied, UV-C light is strong enough to damage bacterial DNA, including Salmonella.

“Using UV-C light to combat Salmonella contamination is an effective and simple method. UV-C light stops the growth of pathogenic bacteria by breaking their DNA chains,” she explained.

Zulfahmi added that the UV-C system designed to combat Salmonella bacteria consists of several parts: a control panel, sterilization plastic, egg tray, machine wheels, frame, gear wheels, conveyor belt, and UV-C light.

Specifically, UV-C light can kill Salmonella bacteria in 10-15 minutes, depending on the wavelength and exposure time.

“Installing UV-C light on the conveyor after grading can optimize time efficiency in industrial-scale operations. Therefore, it is important to introduce this UV-C sterilization method to the layer chicken farming industry to enhance food safety and quality,” Zulfahmi elaborated.

The creative idea from these two Animal Science students, under the supervision of Galuh Adi Insani, won 2nd place in the Poultry Literacy Competition held by Universitas Padjadjaran’s Poultry Professional Group from Aug. 27 to Sept. 26, 2024.

The Kaphibara team from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), secured third place in the 2024 Marketeers Innovation Challenge (MIC).

The team consists of five undergraduate Management students from the class of 2022: Audrey Valensya Nabilla, Ayu Rahmi Widianarsi, Annisa Mayza Jasmine, Alifa Talitha Tsaqif Ramadhani, and Metta Varent.

They competed against 113 teams from universities across Indonesia during the competition, which was held on Dec. 16, 2024, in Jakarta.

Alifa Talitha Tsaqif Ramadhani explained that all competing teams were required to submit case study solutions as proposals. The organizers then selected the top 10 teams to present their proposals in the semi-finals, which were conducted online.

Following this selection process, the top three teams were chosen to compete in the finals held in person.

“We are incredibly grateful and happy to have reached this point,” Ramadhani shared on Thursday (Jan. 16).

Reflecting on their achievement, Ramadhani emphasized the extensive brainstorming and hard work required to reach this milestone.

She expressed gratitude for the accomplishment, particularly because the competition is a prestigious national-level business case challenge featuring 114 exceptional teams with outstanding ideas.

In the competition, Ramadhani explained that the teams were tasked with designing strategies to strengthen Jiniso’s position as Indonesia’s leading unisex jeans brand.

The primary focus was on creating an integrated customer experience across various sales channels, both online and offline, while enhancing brand awareness of Jiniso’s transformation into a unisex brand.

Additionally, teams were required to propose creative branding campaigns that addressed consumer needs and improved Jiniso’s competitiveness in the local fashion market.

“The proposed omnichannel approach needed to address consumer demands by providing easy access to products, information, and services anytime and anywhere,” she elaborated.

Rokhima Rostiani, the team’s faculty advisor, highlighted the challenges the team faced on their journey to the finals. Beyond delivering innovative and relevant solutions, the team also had to manage overlapping schedules with final exams.

“Thankfully, the team overcame these obstacles and achieved this remarkable result. This achievement was also made possible by the faculty’s support, including providing facilities for the in-person final presentation and mentoring from faculty members,” she said.

Rostiani expressed hope that the Kaphibara team from FEB UGM would continue contributing and creating innovative solutions for Indonesian industries within and beyond the competition. She also viewed this success as a gateway to new opportunities and future achievements.

Semar UGM, one of UGM’s most innovative flagship vehicles, is preparing to debut in the 2025 Shell Eco-Marathon Asia Pacific and Middle East, which will be held at Lusail Circuit, Qatar, from Feb. 8 to 12.

Shell Eco-Marathon is a prestigious competition that showcases energy-efficient vehicles that push the boundaries of innovation.

This year marks a new chapter after five consecutive years of the competition being held in Indonesia, specifically at the Mandalika Circuit in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Hans Tobias Sihombing, the General Manager of Semar UGM, stated that the Semar UGM team is presenting two of its best vehicles to compete with energy-efficient innovations from numerous international student teams.

These vehicles are the Semar Urban Hydroz 1.2, powered by hydrogen fuel, and the Semar Proto 4.0, which uses electricity as its primary energy source.

“We aim to bring a grand vision to promote sustainability innovation through this international competition,” Sihombing said in a statement to reporters on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Sihombing noted that Semar UGM achieved various outstanding accomplishments in previous competitions, such as first place in the Urban Hydrogen Fuel Category, first place in the Prototype Electric Category with a record of 938 km/kWh, first place in the Off-track Data and Telemetry Category, and third place in the Regional Championship.

“Semar UGM’s achievements in previous years demonstrate the team’s dominance and competence as one of the best in the field of energy-efficient vehicles,” he explained.

Semar UGM’s path to victory was not easy. Great sacrifices had to be made, such as missing final exams, which they had to retake after the competition.

The team faced tremendous pressure during the competition due to a critical issue. The Semar Proto 4.0 failed the technical inspection until the second day, leaving no opportunity for Semar Proto to practice on the track.

However, through intense discussions, collaboration, and unwavering determination, Semar Proto 4.0 ultimately claimed 1st place in its category.

“This experience was a nerve-wracking moment that demonstrated the team’s resilience, dedication, and determination to achieve the best and emerge as champions,” he recalled.

Semar UGM is determined to continue this spirit of innovation as it brings its environmentally friendly vehicle designs closer to implementation on the road. The journey toward this achievement is not done alone.

Semar UGM is proud to receive support from various partners committed to sustainability, such as PT Petrokimia Gresik, Pos Properti Indonesia, Jericho, PLN, Toyota Astra Motor, Citra Jelajah Informatika, Wefreight, Inalum, Pebsteel, Dharma Precision Parts, and Air Liquide.

Semar UGM is also continuously open to collaborations with new partners who share the same vision: to create beneficial and sustainable innovations and creations for the world.

Ali Alexander, an undergraduate student from the Management program at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM), has become one of the university’s outstanding students.

To date, he has achieved 41 victories in various national and international competitions throughout his studies at UGM.

Known as a student with strong principles, Alexander was tenacious and persistent in his learning journey. His success in numerous competitions was not easy; it was not a case of winning at the first attempt.

He had to face multiple failures along the way. For him, failure and challenges are opportunities to grow, learn, and evolve further. With high resilience, Alexander has won 41 competitions during his studies, including 32 equity research competitions, 4 business plan competitions, and 5 business case competitions.

“I failed seven times, but I kept learning from those failures, and eventually, I managed to win many times,” he said on Monday (Jan. 6).

Alexander is committed to living life without regrets. Hence, he constantly strives to engage in productive activities during his studies, one of which is participating in various competitions. By participating in competitions, he gains numerous learning opportunities.

Although he has participated in many competitions, Alexander admits that most are finance-related. He is highly interested in investment and finance, and this passion drives him to conduct many evaluations and stock research.

“It all started in 2020 when I read and heard about the success story of Andika Sutoro Putra, a young billionaire and founder of FOLK Group. That’s what strongly fueled my interest in the world of investment,” he explained.

Andika Sutoro Putra’s success in achieving financial freedom at a young age inspired Alexander to delve deeper into the world of investment. He began learning about financial investments through various books, seminars, and YouTube videos.

From these sources, he gained an understanding of company fundamentals, how to read financial statements, valuation, and company prospects and risks.

Alexander’s interest in finance and investment grew even more when he began his studies at FEB UGM in 2021. Since becoming a student, he has actively participated in various finance competitions. Although his early attempts were not smooth, and he faced some failures, he persevered.

“Keep trying, never give up, and keep learning. That’s the key to staying motivated,” the student admitted.

Alexander considers himself fortunate to have met Dr. Eddy Junarsin, a lecturer from the Department of Management at FEB UGM, in his third semester. That meeting, according to Alexander, broadened his understanding of finance significantly.

“I learned even more about valuation, which became the key to winning in equity research competitions,” he revealed.

Balancing lectures, internships, and actively participating in various competitions is certainly not easy for students. The same applies to Alexander, who manages his time well and sets clear priorities.

“Because this is my hobby, I voluntarily conduct stock analysis and participate in competitions during my free time. I am grateful that the asset allocation material I received during my lectures has further strengthened my understanding of the investment world,” he said.

Alexander is also happy to share some tips for students who wish to start participating in competitions.

According to him, the most important thing is not to be afraid to try and to understand that failure is part of the learning process. Finding a mentor relevant to the competition field you want to pursue is also crucial.

“It’s important for us to get the right guidance. Don’t hesitate to make the most of the facilities available on campus,” Alexander advised.

A UGM student team named ‘Pairgrowth Team’ won first place in the Capital Market Inclusion Competition at the 2024 Jambi Financial Inclusion Festival, held from Sept. 23 to Nov. 16, 2024, at Universitas Jambi.

The Pairgrowth Team consists of Ali Alexander (2021, Management, FEB UGM) and Elsa Firlyani (2021, Property Valuation Management, SV UGM).

The team was mentored by Dr. Eddy Junarsin, who served as their advisor. They triumphed over 34 other teams from various universities across Indonesia.

The Capital Market Study Group of Universitas Jambi conducted the competition online.

Alexander explained that the Pairgrowth team’s initial stage in this competition was to produce an equity research paper.

All teams in this stage were required to conduct a comprehensive analysis, covering macroeconomic aspects, industry, business profiles, business processes, financials, valuation, and risks related to the analyzed company.

“We and almost all the participating teams were tasked with analyzing PT Bank Mandiri, which was facing macroeconomic turbulence, making growth difficult, and we were also given the added challenge of addressing public skepticism toward BMRI stocks,” he said at the UGM campus, Friday, Jan. 3, 2025.

He revealed that PT Bank Mandiri, operating in the banking sector, differs from non-financial companies that have specific financial templates.

This condition posed a challenge in creating the valuation.

“However, since I am already accustomed to calculating banking valuations, I was able to complete it quickly and accurately,” he stated.

Amid the delight of the victory, Alexander and his teammate acknowledged that time management was a challenge during the competition.

While competing, Alexander also interned at PT Nestlé Indonesia. Thus, he had to manage his time between the internship and the competition.

Meanwhile, his teammate Elsa Firlyani was participating in a student exchange program abroad, which required her to adapt to the time zone differences.

“Despite the many challenges, we ultimately succeeded in winning and bringing glory to FEB UGM and UGM at the national level,” he concluded.

Ali Alexander, an undergraduate student from the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM), earned another proud achievement during the ASEAN Investment Challenge 2024.

A 2021 cohort student of the Management Program, Alexander successfully claimed the Champion title in Indonesia at the prestigious competition organized by CGS International Sekuritas Indonesia and CGS International Securities Group in Jakarta.

This victory at the national level grants him the opportunity to represent Indonesia at the regional competition, which will take place in January 2025. Additionally, Alexander was awarded a coaching fund worth IDR 70,000,000.

The ASEAN Investment Challenge is a leading annual investment competition organized by CGS International. This competition aims to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable investing and contribute to building a strong stock market in the future.

With the theme “Your Galaxy, Your Way!,” this year’s country-level competition took place over four months, from August to November 2024. As one of the premier investment competitions in Southeast Asia, the ASEAN Investment Challenge 2024 attracted more than a thousand students from across Indonesia.

The competition is divided into two stages: the country level and the regional level. At the country level, participants from various nations, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, compete in a series of investment challenges.

This stage consists of participant registration, a learning journey, and the country-level challenge, which lasts six weeks (October 21 – November 29, 2024). The top three winners from each country will represent their respective countries at the regional-level challenge scheduled for January 2025.

The main challenge in this competition was to design an optimal investment strategy to maximize profits amid economic uncertainty.

In solving this case, participants were required to build an efficient stock portfolio with returns greater than the IDX Composite, considering diversification, adhering to ESG (environmental, social, governance) criteria, maintaining a high margin of safety, and identifying opportunities from companies involved in corporate actions, such as acquisitions or mergers.

Alexander successfully overcame these challenges by implementing a strategy based on in-depth fundamental analysis. To avoid downside risks, he prioritized companies with high growth potential and undervalued stocks.

Additionally, Alexander was keen to spot opportunities from corporate actions such as acquisitions or mergers that could significantly drive up stock prices. With the proposed solution, Alexander managed to build a portfolio with returns higher than the IDX Composite while supporting ESG sustainability principles.

“This strategy has proven effective over a certain trading period and has delivered a performance far superior to market indices,” he explained recently.

Despite emerging as the champion, Alexander’s journey to victory was not easy. He admitted to facing immense pressure during the competition, coming from the tight competition with other participants and the pressure to make the right investment decisions.

However, he managed to navigate the lengthy competition process and win by staying focused and composed. He also felt confident in the strategy he had crafted.

Alexander revealed that he prioritized fundamental analysis in selecting stocks from companies with significant potential, including those involved in or planning corporate actions like acquisitions or mergers.

With confidence in this research-based approach, he handled the competition’s pressure and made calculated decisions. This strategy proved effective, allowing him to achieve higher returns than the IDX Composite.

Alexander received support from many parties in preparing for this competition. In his preparation for the regional level, Alexander received guidance from Dr. Eddy Junarsin, a lecturer at FEB UGM, who had previously helped him study valuations for finance competitions in his third semester.

Alexander hopes to give his best on the ASEAN regional stage.

“I am proud to have won this title. For the next stage, I kindly ask for everyone’s support to continue progressing well and win the competition,” Alexander added.

Alexander’s achievement is concrete proof that one can achieve one’s dreams with hard work, perseverance, and the right strategy. His success not only brings pride to FEB UGM but also inspires all Indonesian students to dare to try new things and face challenges.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) students have once again achieved remarkable success.

This time, a team of UGM students, comprising Muhammad Faris Khiar Calosa, Ridho Nur Alam, Irvan Khotibul Umam, Muhammad Syukur Shidiq, and Agus Syahputra, secured an award at the 2024 International Youth Summit (IYS).

The students, hailing from various faculties such as Biology, Cultural Science, Engineering, and Pharmacy, received recognition at the international essay and scientific presentation competition held by Universiti Putra Malaysia on Nov. 9-10, 2024.

In this prestigious event, the UGM team won a silver medal for their innovative work titled “Boba Bean: An Innovative Instant Red Bean Beverage for Anemia Prevention Among Adolescents.”

Boba Bean is a red bean-based nutritional solution specifically designed to prevent anemia among teenagers. This product combines natural ingredients like red beans, which are known for being rich in iron and essential for boosting daily iron intake.

The idea behind this innovation stemmed from the high prevalence of anemia in Indonesia, particularly among young women. Iron supplements or tablets are often deemed ineffective in fulfilling iron needs, as many people struggle to consume capsules.

“We wanted to create a more appealing alternative that fits the tastes of younger generations,” said Agus Syahputra on Monday (Dec. 23).

During the competition, the team had various new experiences, one of which was presenting their work before international judges and attendees.

They also showcased their product, a Boba Bean dish. The team explained their innovation and answered various questions in English.

“This was truly a valuable experience,” Syahputra shared.

International judges praised their scientific work for its creative approach and foundation in scientific research. The Boba Bean innovation also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-being.

“Through this nutritious and practical food solution, Boba Bean is expected to be an effective alternative for anemia prevention, which remains a global health issue,” he said.

Syahputra hopes that Boba Bean can be further developed and benefit society more broadly. Winning the silver medal at the 2024 International Youth Summit brought pride to UGM and inspired Indonesia’s younger generation to continue creating and innovating on the international stage.

“This success opens up opportunities for us to collaborate further in supporting the global health movement,” Syahputra concluded.

The UGM team, led by Bintang Ramadhan from the Department of Chemical Engineering, comprised four members: Gregorius Faustino Hener and Akmal Argiyanto Pratama from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Rafa Haidar Wicaksana from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Ariyo Favian Tamim from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Manager Mikael Kevin Christian Nugroho supported the Department of Chemical Engineering team, who assisted in designing and developing an eco-friendly car based on chemical reactions with high energy efficiency.

As the team captain, Bintang Ramadhan shared that the Narantaka team began preparing for the competition approximately one month in advance, from October to November 2024.

The preparation involved research, car design, data collection, and routine trials to achieve optimal results on competition day.

Despite the limited preparation time, the team delivered an excellent performance, bringing pride to Universitas Gadjah Mada and Indonesia.

“This victory is the result of hard work, dedication, and the spirit of all team members. We are proud to showcase the collaboration between chemical and mechanical engineering through our car. This competition tested our technical skills and honed our teamwork and problem-solving abilities. We are grateful to everyone who supported our journey. This victory is not the end but the beginning of future innovations in eco-friendly cars,” said Ramadhan on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, at the UGM Campus.

The Chem-E-Car competition involved several key stages for participating teams, including evaluating the car’s concept and safety aspects, presenting a poster, and competing in the race.

Interestingly, the race segment of the IEM competition required teams to develop a car capable of completing two tasks: pushing a ball to knock down bowling pins and pushing a ball into a goal. In addition to completing these tasks, the car’s distance accuracy to the finish line was also assessed.

The team’s car achieved a perfect score for the goal task with high distance accuracy.

“We are proud that the UGM Reactics Chem-E-Car team developed a car with an innovative concept, accurately utilizing and calculating chemical reactions, and confidently performed in front of the judges,” said Mikael Kevin Christian Nugroho.

However, challenges extended beyond technical aspects.

Ariyo Favian added, “We faced external challenges such as time zone differences, weather, language, cultural differences, and other limitations. Physical and mental adaptation was crucial to performing at our best.”

This valuable opportunity was made possible thanks to the support of the entire Reactics Chem-E-Car UGM team and all involved parties.

Special thanks were also extended to the Reactics faculty advisors, including Dr. Budhijanto, Addin Suwastono, Mokhammad Fajar Pradipta, and Dr. Robertus Dimas Dhewangga Putra.

Appreciation was also given to the Reactics Chem-E-Car UGM sponsors and donors, including TEKAGAMA (Chemical Engineering Alumni of Gadjah Mada), Pertamina International Refinery, PT PLN Puslitbang, Pupuk Sriwidjaja Palembang, Almaz Fried Chicken, and PT Jasamarga.

This achievement is a stepping stone and a foundation for the Reactics team to continue innovating, achieving extraordinary milestones, and excelling in future competitions on both national and international levels.

A student team from the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), achieved remarkable success by winning two awards at the SxC Grand Impact Business Case Competition 2024, held online on Nov. 23, 2024.

In addition to securing the title of 2nd Runner-Up, the team, Hyena Jogja, also received the Best Paper award.

Hyena Jogja comprises Ivan Hiumawan (Management 2023) and Anne Grace Pardosi (Accounting 2023).

Ivan Hiumawan explained that their team competed against dozens of teams from various universities across Indonesia to earn these achievements.

The competition required participants to progress through the preliminary and final presentation stages.

In the preliminary stage, participants were tasked with drafting a paper that included an in-depth analysis of the company’s condition, profile, proposed solutions, and conclusions.

The analysis considered internal and external aspects, as well as risk mitigation.

“In this competition, participants were asked to address a real-life case involving cash flow issues within a company. The case simulated a company facing a payment gap between its customers and obligations to suppliers,” Hiumawan explained at FEB UGM on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024.

According to Hiumawan, this payment gap resulted in unhealthy cash flow, prompting teams to devise strategic solutions.

Hyena Jogja presented an innovative approach emphasizing customer payment efficiency and more optimal debt management.

The final stage, an online presentation, posed a unique challenge for the team. Despite their nerves, Hiumawan found the competition a valuable first-time experience.

“This was our first time presenting in such a prestigious competition. We felt nervous and even blanked out when answering the judges’ questions. Imagine presenting in only 10 minutes — we had to deliver our ideas concisely and clearly,” he shared.

Despite the pressure, Anne Pardosi expressed gratitude for Hyena Jogja’s ability to perform at their best and earn high praise from the judges.

The team also faced personal challenges, including health issues, during the competition process.

“This was a major hurdle when drafting the paper. Even though it was tough, we supported each other and ultimately achieved satisfying results,” Pardosi added.

Pardosi highlighted the significant role of FEB UGM in their success.

The team received mentoring facilitated by the Career and Student Development Unit (CSDU) under the guidance of their faculty advisor, Professor Mamduh M. Hanafi.

“We are grateful for the support throughout the competition process. Professor Mamduh Hanafi provided invaluable insights, particularly in preparing a comprehensive and integrated analysis and solution,” said Pardosi.
