Professor Nyoman Kertia of Universitas Gadjah Mada is highly regarded for his dedication to exploring traditional medicine and its integration into modern medical practices.

He believes Indonesia’s vast potential in herbal plants could replace chemical medicines in contemporary healthcare.

A lecturer at UGM’s Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM) originally from Buleleng, Bali, Professor Kertia developed an interest in traditional remedies driven by the vast biodiversity of Indonesian herbal plants.

Meanwhile, 90% of chemical medicine ingredients are still imported, which has been a growing concern for Professor Kertia in his research on traditional medicine.

“Western standards should not constrain academics. If processed properly, medicinal plants can be highly effective and safe,” Professor Kertia remarked on Friday (Dec. 27) at UGM.

Professor Kertia regretted the lack of interest in utilizing traditional medical practices in healthcare. He noted that today’s society is increasingly suffering from conditions linked to unhealthy eating habits and junk food, such as diabetes, cholesterol, uric acid issues, and even life-threatening complications like stroke and heart disease.

Unfortunately, traditional treatment methods for these ailments have long been abandoned in favor of modern medicine, which is considered more effective.

“Many people experience stress and mental health problems because they forget the traditional wisdom of living simply and gratefully,” Professor Kertia added.

As the Chair of the Herbal Medicine Council in Yogyakarta and the Head of the Natural Medicine Development Team at Dr Sardjito Hospital FK-KMK UGM, Professor Kertia has been actively researching to develop herbal-based medicines.

One of his studies focuses on traditional treatments for osteoarthritis, a chronic joint inflammation.

In comparing modern treatments using Piroxicam to traditional remedies with herbal plants like turmeric, ginger, and red onion, Professor Kertia found that while both have anti-inflammatory properties, the herbal treatment demonstrated a lower risk of slowing the progression of osteoarthritis.

“I have conducted extensive research, including on turmeric, ginger, shrimp shells, soybeans, gooseberry, gotu kola, memory enhancement drugs, and the Yogyakarta Sustainable Health program, which serves as a guideline for health development in Yogyakarta,” he explained.

Beyond herbal medicines, Professor Kertia incorporates other traditional healing methods such as acupuncture, traditional massage, and meditation.

He emphasized that these ancient healing practices passed down through generations as part of Indonesia’s local wisdom deserves to be preserved and further developed.

Professor Kertia’s dedication to traditional medicine has earned him the UGM Award in medicine and Indonesian culture. The award was presented by UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia at UGM’s Dies Natalis celebration on Thursday (Dec. 19).

Professor Kertia expressed his gratitude for the award, hoping it will motivate him and other researchers to conduct more in-depth studies on the potential of Indonesian traditional medicines and herbal plants as healing methods and means of preserving the nation’s cultural heritage and values.

“I am thankful that UGM recognizes the importance of public health through the wisdom of our ancestors, especially in herbal drinks and medicines,” he said.

The Open Senate Meeting for the 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum of Universitas Gadjah Mada was held on Thursday (Dec. 19) at Grha Sabha Pramana.

During the peak celebration of this Dies Natalis, several academics received the 2024 UGM Award. Among them was Professor Saiful Deni, who received the award for his contributions to community empowerment and poverty alleviation.

Professor Deni, a UGM alumnus currently serving as Rector of Universitas Muhammadiyah Maluku Utara (UMMU), expressed gratitude and motivation to continue making impactful contributions through his work.

“I thank UGM for this award and the UMMU community as a place to advance knowledge. I am pleased and feel responsible for maintaining this achievement,” said Professor Deni on Tuesday (Dec. 24).

After graduating with a Master’s in Administrative Sciences from UGM in 2004, Professor Deni pursued his career as an academic, conducting various research projects.

His publications often discuss North Maluku’s socio-cultural, geographic, and regional potential.

One of his journal articles, “Makayaklo Culture of the People of North Maluku: Teaching the Values of Building Solidarity and Social Integration,” explores how the culture of North Maluku has played an essential role in preserving moral values and traditions that are still upheld today.

In another piece of research, Professor Deni studied the geographic conditions as part of flood mitigation efforts for the Ternate government.

According to Professor Deni, this project, which has been carried out over the past two years, aims to prevent flooding and explore the potential of Ternate’s groundwater.

“This study has been highly beneficial to the local government in meeting the need for clean water, thus increasing the productivity and well-being of the community,” he explained.

He also researched the implementation of social assistance for poor communities in North Halmahera Regency.

This initiative improved basic education infrastructure and strengthened collaboration with the North Maluku government. Professor Deni emphasized that poverty alleviation requires the integration of various social, economic, cultural, and environmental dimensions.

“Community empowerment and poverty reduction are two interrelated aspects. From a public policy perspective, this approach aims to create independent, competitive communities capable of breaking the cycle of poverty,” he explained.

In his view, effective public policy must integrate these dimensions. Collaboration between the government, private sector, and the community is key to creating meaningful change.

His various works on the social and geographic conditions of North Maluku set him apart because they focused on an area that had not been extensively studied.

Each of his studies aims to improve the quality of life for the community through the selection of just policies. This has earned Professor Deni several accolades, including the 2024 UGM Award.

As an academic, Professor Deni hopes his work can continue to contribute ideas to society through research, teaching, and service. He is also committed to continuously developing his academic tradition and personal competence.

He hopes this award will inspire the younger generation to excel nationally and globally.

The Chair of Muhammadiyah Central Leadership, Professor Haedar Nashir, said issues of ethics and morals remain closely linked to the weaknesses in Indonesian society’s character.

Several incidents or cases, as social facts, reflect the moral and ethical crisis or degradation of the nation’s noble values in recent times.

The most prominent cases include the dismissal of the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK), the Chairperson of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), and the Chairperson of the General Election Commission (KPU), which represent the erosion of moral and ethical standards among state officials or public figures.

The most recent case involves the resignation of a government official who is also a religious leader due to ethical propriety in social interactions.

“Moral and ethical violations by public officials should not be taken lightly or considered ordinary as they concern the nation’s elite, who should serve as role models for the people,” said Professor Nashir during his address for the Hamengku Buwono IX Award from Universitas Gadjah Mada in 2024.

The ceremony was held at the Kagungan Dalem Bangsal Srimanganti of Yogyakarta Palace on Thursday night, Dec. 19.

In his speech titled “Transforming the Mentality and Culture of Indonesia,” Professor Nashir explained that moral and ethical issues within the nation’s mentality are cultural issues relating to humanity’s collective knowledge system in a shared life. Indonesian society has developed new lifestyles that reflect anomie or anomalies, namely behavioral deviations within society.

When corruption, materialism, money politics, the pursuit of worldly pleasures (hedonism), and opportunism (justifying any means to an end) become widespread, uprootedness results.

“We can still enumerate structural problems in the nation, such as corruption, abuse of power, money politics, transactional politics, and other political issues that touch on moral and ethical domains. In everyday life, the problems are just as serious, including online gambling, cyber crime, drug abuse, sexual violence, murders within families or among close acquaintances, the low level of civility among Indonesian netizens in social media, and other sociopathic problems,” he explained.

For Professor Nashir, the dimensions of morality and ethics in a society or nation cannot be underestimated because they concern good and bad values, which inherently represent humanity’s spiritual dignity and intellectual integrity.

These moral and ethical issues cannot be marginalized as mere domestic or private matters. Even in nations known for being advanced and secular-modern, these values are still upheld.

“Many cases demonstrate how high-ranking officials, even prime ministers, resign due to professional and public ethics issues. This is especially important for Indonesia, a nation rooted in religious values, Pancasila, and the noble cultural traditions of its people,” he added.

A transformative cultural approach is necessary to address the nation’s mental weakness. Transformation serves as a middle path for change, guiding Indonesia toward progress while fostering a strong Indonesian character both individually and collectively within a new cultural system.

In this context, Indonesia possesses crystallized virtues that serve as significant social and cultural capital. Among these are resilience, the ability to endure hardship, prioritizing harmony, and mutual cooperation.

These virtues remain relevant but require adaptation and development to align with the dynamics and challenges of the times.

“It is urgent to transform the nation’s character by preserving and enhancing long-established virtues while developing new ones, including openness to the virtues of other advanced nations,” he elaborated.

According to Professor Nashir, transforming Indonesians into intelligent individuals with strong character in today’s context means fostering religiosity, intellectual capacity, and mastery of science and technology, complemented by superior mental qualities such as trustworthiness, sincerity, honesty, courage, decisiveness, resilience, independence, and adherence to principles.

Indonesia’s vision for 2045 can be realized if today’s younger generation embodies these qualities—rather than being weak, submissive, superficial, parasitic, or exploitative of cheap populism without the knowledge, character, and exemplary behavior needed for excellence.

Professor Nashir has been a dedicated figure in Muhammadiyah since 1983. For Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, Professor Nashir has not only been present in the historical arena but has carved a wealth of meaning into it.

The Sultan highlighted that under Haedar’s leadership, Muhammadiyah has successfully advanced its vision of excellence on both national and global scales.

“The concept of ‘Centre of Excellence’ is not just an empty idea but a way of life for Muhammadiyah at the national and global levels,” said the Sultan.

Professor Nashir’s leadership has produced significant milestones, such as the Muhammadiyah Da’wah Center in Cairo, Universiti Muhammadiyah Malaysia (UMAM), and Muhammadiyah Australia College (MAC) in Melbourne.

“Essentially, these projects are not merely about physical development or network expansion but noble efforts to build a robust civilization based on Islamic values that are moderate, inclusive, and progressive,” said the Sultan.

The Sultan acknowledged Professor Nashir’s leadership as a reflection of Muhammadiyah’s philosophy of progress, community development, and spreading benefits to the universe.

“In his thoughts, knowledge is not merely a symbol of information but a guiding light that should lead society amidst the challenges and dynamics of the era,” he explained.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia stated that Professor Haedar Nashir consistently and committedly carries out his duties in education, social, political, and humanitarian fields.

“Congratulations to Professor Haedar Nashir. May he continue to contribute to society and inspire future generations,” she said.

Professor Nashir expressed gratitude and honor for receiving this award, describing it as a pride because it represents the legacy of Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX.

“My thanks to the Yogyakarta Palace for approving this award, to the Rector of UGM, and Muhammadiyah for giving me this opportunity. I feel honored to receive the Hamengku Buwono IX Award from UGM,” he stated.

As an alumnus who spent six years completing his master’s and doctoral studies in sociology, Professor Nashir explained that UGM provided him with essential values that he continues to uphold today.

He described UGM as an educational institution and a thought center that equips its students with tools and methodologies to internalize life values.

He outlined five main values he learned during his time at UGM.

  1. The value of truth based on knowledge: He explained that truth is not limited to academic logic but is also connected to Pancasila, religion, and the nation’s noble culture. “Truth is the main value of scholars,” he emphasized.
  1. The tradition of scholarship: He described UGM as a “school of thought” fostering critical thinking.
  2. Unity in diversity: As a miniature Indonesia, UGM provides a space for students of diverse backgrounds to learn to live harmoniously.
  3. Love for the people: He noted that UGM instills a sense of caring for the people, exemplified by real contributions like the Community Service Program (KKN).
  4. Global orientation: Professor Nashir encouraged UGM and Muhammadiyah institutions to respond actively to global issues, such as sustainable development goals and climate change, and lauded initiatives like Wanagama in the Nusantara Capital (IKN).

Professor Nashir emphasized the need to integrate education, knowledge, and social concern to build a better nation, urging all to move forward with a global spirit rooted in cultural and humanistic values.

In its 75th year, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing the nation through the development of science and technology, instilling noble values and nationalism in its community, and playing a significant role in shaping a superior and competitive future generation.

The Rector of UGM, Professor Ova Emilia, in her Rector’s Report speech delivered at the celebration of the Dies Natalis on Thursday (Dec. 19) at Grha Sabha Pramana, stated that this year’s celebration serves as a moment to reflect on UGM’s commitment to building the nation.

She emphasized the importance of progress in innovation and higher dedication to fostering nationalism, strengthening national identity, and forming a civilized and ethical society.

“UGM remains committed to producing a generation ready to face global challenges and contribute positively to the nation and society,” the rector said.

UGM’s achievements, including being ranked as the number one university in Indonesia for sustainability by the QS Sustainability Ranking 2025, are the result of collective efforts, hard work, and sustained, adaptive, and agile leadership.

These efforts have produced innovations that benefit national development and contribute positively at a global level.

However, as a state university with legal entity status, UGM faces challenges in a highly dynamic global ecosystem, ranging from climate change and environmental issues to cultural shifts, advancements in digital technology, geopolitical tensions, and socioeconomic inequalities impacting human welfare.

“In the global framework, the SDGs are a mainstream policy as a sustainable future becomes a shared vision for achieving more equitable and inclusive global welfare,” she stated.

To address these challenges, UGM continues to improve its education, research, and community service activities.

In education, UGM has developed a dignified and inclusive educational system through innovative technology-based learning models, transdisciplinary education, and cross-sectoral collaborations.

With the “university without walls” paradigm, UGM provides broad access to education for communities and vulnerable groups through geographically and economically affirmative education policies and various scholarship programs.

“The development of UGM Online as an open online learning platform is a concrete step to open access to quality education for the wider community,” she explained.

As a national university, UGM adheres to regulations to seek and admit prospective students with high academic potential but limited economic means through the Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP-K) program. It also admits students from frontier, outermost, and disadvantaged regions (3T), ensuring at least 20% of all new students come from these groups. In 2024, 21.69% or 2,316 of the 10,678 new students admitted were from underprivileged and 3T backgrounds.

In research, UGM continuously advances innovation and translational research to deliver impactful results for society. In 2024, UGM recorded 880 intellectual property titles, comprising 92 patents, 751 copyrights, 26 industrial designs, and 11 trademarks.

Through flagship research and innovation programs, UGM has developed innovations supporting food security, health resilience, energy resilience, and digital transformation. These include fortified rice, Gama Gora 7, Happy Chicken Eggs, Malika Soybeans, Saekedelai, Gama Cattle, Vibrio Vaccine for fish, biofertilizers, and Gama Umami grass, among others.

In health, UGM has developed innovative products using high-quality natural ingredients, such as Cinnacare, Berwyn Dent, and Propasdent Propolis Toothpaste. It has also produced locally made medical devices, including digital microscopes to detect sugar, colorectal cancer early detection applications, and self-care foot tools for diabetes patients.

In energy resilience, UGM supports government policies to achieve energy security and clean energy transitions. Researchers have successfully conducted studies on lithium battery recycling and smart battery management. UGM also promotes the Net Zero Emission Campus program, incorporating energy efficiency, renewable energy use, and emission reduction initiatives across all campus operations to model sustainability in Indonesia.

UGM has also made advancements in digital technology, developing knowledge management, big data, future skills, shared services, and resources to provide excellent services to stakeholders. It has introduced applications like Desa Apps, Lentera DESA, iTrap, and the Sikendang innovation for agricultural sovereignty, particularly in addressing climate change.

To boost national and international publications, UGM incentivizes lecturers and researchers and increases postgraduate student enrollment. The postgraduate student proportion is targeted at 40% by 2027. As of the 2024 academic year, postgraduate students account for 30.87% of the total 61,061 students.

In community service, UGM deployed 315 units of KKN-PPM programs across 35 provinces, 29 regencies, and 247 subdistricts in 2024, involving 8,513 students from 18 faculties and one school. UGM also implements community-based research downstreaming and education through village development programs and appropriate technology applications.

Despite the wet and muddy grounds caused by a heavy evening downpour, visitors eagerly flocked to the market, seeking the nostalgic atmosphere presented as part of UGM’s Anniversary celebrations.

Each vendor tent was adorned with palm leaf fringes and simple bamboo decorations, enhancing the old-time charm.

Traditional snacks such as clorot, carabikang, lempeng juruh, apem, geblek, kue cucur, kue lapis, and many more were available at Pasar Kangen. These nostalgic treats were sold at affordable prices, mostly wrapped in leaves for an authentic touch.

Beyond snacks, heartier dishes like mie pentil, sego jagung, sate klathak, sate kronyos, oseng mercon, bothok, and other meals were also offered.

“I’m so happy to relive my youth by buying dawet ireng jembut. It’s the most iconic snack, always busy, and a must-buy whenever Pasar Kangen is held here,” said Fatur, one of the visitors.

In addition to dawet ireng, drinks such as es kuwut, es tung tung, fresh milk, wedang tahu, and other beverages were available to complement the meals and quench visitors’ thirst.

On another side of the market, stalls showcasing trinkets and antiques were neatly arranged, pleasing the eyes of onlookers. Old coins, porcelain vases, cowbells, and vintage books were sold at reasonable prices.

Visitors were free to browse, touch, and haggle, much like in a traditional market. Stamps from various countries were sold affordably, with bulk package options for even better deals.

“I’ve been a philatelist since school. I have stamps from many countries, and because they’re rare now, Pasar Kangen is where I hunt for affordable ones. Thank you, UGM, for organizing this,” said Totok, a middle-aged visitor.

Besides the vendor stalls, crowds gathered around the main stage, where various performers entertained with their golden voices until 10 p.m.

The hosting of Pasar Kangen as part of the Nitilaku series underscored UGM’s commitment to being a people’s university by providing well-loved public entertainment.

“As a graduating student, this is one of the UGM events I’ve been looking forward to, and I wouldn’t want to miss it. I hope this event continues and isn’t discontinued,” shared Hari, a visitor.

Ninety-nine runners participated in the UGM Ultra Charity Run, held on Dec. 14-15 in Yogyakarta.

This charity run, organized to celebrate UGM’s 75th anniversary, featured four categories: a 75-kilometer run with 11 participants, a 45-kilometer run with 9 participants, a 30-kilometer run with 19 participants, a 15-kilometer run with 52 participants, and a 5-kilometer run with 37 participants.

Among all participants, around 80 alumni took part in this event.

The Chairperson of the UGM Ultra Charity Run 75K Committee, Arif Purwoko, stated that the charity run was not only a race for speed but also a platform for UGM’s academic community and alumni to contribute to the education of the younger generation.

“In addition to running, the main goal of this event is to raise donations for high-achieving but financially challenged students. We hope these scholarships can help them continue their studies at UGM,” Purwoko said on Sunday (Dec. 15).

The run started and finished at GIK UGM and circled around Yogyakarta.

By the end of the Nitilaku event, the amount raised reached IDR 183,749,469, and the donations will continue to increase until the closing date on Dec. 31, 2024. These donations will be distributed through the KAGAMA scholarship program.

The UGM Ultra Charity Run was not only a sporting event but also a gathering for UGM alumni. With a meeting point at GIK UGM, complete with angkringan facilities, the runners had the opportunity to share stories and strengthen their bonds of fraternity.

“This is my third time joining this event. I participated in the 73rd and 74th runs, and I hope this 75th one runs smoothly,” said Aci, an alumnus from the Faculty of Geography.

Following the successful organization of the UGM Ultra Charity Run 75K, the committee hopes this event can become an annual gathering, growing bigger and more festive each year. Additionally, they hope it will inspire more people to participate in social activities.

“We hope this event will continue and that more people will be motivated to donate and help others,” concluded Purwoko.

This event was part of the UGM’s 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum celebrations, highlighting the harmony and synergy between UGM and the UGM Alumni Association (Kagama).

During the gathering, awards were presented to three UGM’s Faculty of Forestry alumni for their significant contributions to the development of Wanagama Nusantara, a 621-hectare education and conservation area in the new capital city of Indonesia, Nusantara (IKN).

The awardees included Muchamad Sumedi, recognized for his dedication to forest and land rehabilitation; Pungky Widiaryanto, for his focus on water resources and forestry development; and Dyah Murtiningsih, for her efforts in gas management and forest rehabilitation.

Wanagama Nusantara is envisioned as a center for environment-based education accessible to the wider community, showcasing UGM’s commitment to conserving Indonesia’s forests.

The Kagama Awards were presented by UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia, alongside Kagama Central Board Chair Basuki Hadimulyono.

In addition to the awards, the event featured a batik and wastra auction, with proceeds directed toward scholarships for underprivileged students.

Sulastama Raharja, Head of Community Service and Environmental Preservation at Kagama, reported that Kagama had disbursed IDR 1.434 billion to 453 students through its scholarship programs.

Raharja detailed that the Gadjah Mada Peduli Foster Parent Program provided 25 students with IDR 605 million, while the Gadjah Mada Peduli Program supported 108 students with a total of IDR 298 million.

This report followed a symbolic scholarship handover to student representatives present at the event.

Dr. Arie Sujito, Chair of UGM’s 75th Anniversary and 15th Lustrum Committee, thanked alumni for their unwavering support of their alma mater, primarily through scholarship programs for underprivileged students.

He emphasized UGM’s commitment as a people-oriented university that upholds inclusivity and ensures access to education for all societal levels.

“UGM firmly believes that no one should miss out on higher education due to financial constraints,” he said.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia highlighted the collaborative efforts between UGM and Kagama through various programs, including Gadjah Mada Peduli, the Foster Parent Program, research commercialization, and alumni contributions to campus development.

She urged alumni to continue supporting education and teaching by participating as practitioners, fostering research, and advancing UGM’s role as a hub of innovation in Indonesia.

“We hope this moment strengthens the synergy between Kagama and UGM,” she concluded.
