As it enters its 79th year, the UGM Faculty of Law (FH UGM) seeks to sharpen its vision and mission related to excellence in education, research, and community service.

This refinement will focus on several key aspects, including programs oriented towards implementing the Blue Economy.

“The implementation of the Blue Economy is FH UGM’s grand vision to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In academics, we also aim to conduct a series of Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and workshops to upgrade the faculty’s curriculum in line with SDG standards,” stated Dr. Heribertus Jaka Triyana, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, and Information Systems, while opening the 79th Anniversary of FH UGM, Friday (Feb. 7).

According to Dr. Triyana, the theme of the Blue Economy as the main focus of the 79th Anniversary of FH UGM is compelling.

The faculty faces numerous challenges in forming and implementing various laws, policies, and programs oriented towards marine-based production and distribution as the primary support for Indonesia’s economy.

Moreover, during this anniversary, FH UGM aims to highlight several national legal issues. These include Ocean Governance and how the government is implementing grand visions of marine empowerment and development in Indonesia.

“As an archipelagic country, we aim to study these matters continuously. We seek to conduct an in-depth analysis of the government’s marine empowerment programs, utilizing the sea as a means of economic enhancement. We will also examine the legal framework surrounding these efforts, which will be discussed through various seminars and FGDs,” the vice dean added.

Dr. Triyana further mentioned that an FGD will be held in collaboration with the University of Windsor, Canada, following the opening of the 79th anniversary.

This FGD will focus on the interaction between private and public law in a comparative context, particularly between Indonesia and Canada.

By examining converging legal systems, the FGD will specifically highlight contemporary legal interventions and emphasize the growing relationship between private and public law from a global comparative perspective.

“Windsor University is our partner, and they are already leading in Canada’s Ocean Governance and the Blue Economy sector. We hope that this anniversary will strengthen our partnership, as we share a major vision and mission of conducting excellent research and community service,” stated the Chair of the 79th Anniversary Committee of FH UGM.

A series of academic and non-academic activities mark the 79th Anniversary of FH UGM. Among them, an appreciation night will be held featuring MALIQ & D’Essentials and Putri Aryani on Feb. 21, 2025, at Grha Sabha Pramana, with the anniversary’s main event scheduled for Feb. 23, 2025.

The anniversary opening ceremony was lively. It started with a group exercise and was followed by a pigeon release by faculty leaders and the anniversary committee.

Paminta, representing Korpagama, appreciated the opening of the 79th Anniversary of FH UGM. He noted that the opening ceremony serves as an interaction platform between faculties.

“With exercise, we can stay healthy together, and we are grateful that UGM has many emerging communities, such as running and yoga groups. We hope that staff, lecturers, and students will become more fit, thus more productive and contributing to UGM,” he explained.

Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Professor Mahfud MD criticized legal enforcement as arbitrary and for failing to uphold equality before the law and government.

He stressed the need for justice and fairness in governance.

“The most relevant thing right now is that we need to build public welfare through democratic politics and governance, which does not act arbitrarily and upholds law and justice based on the principle of equality before the law and government,” said Professor Mahfud during the Diversity Dialogue held in commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of UGM’s Faculty of Law (FH UGM), Wednesday (Feb. 5), at the Auditorium B of FH UGM.

Professor Mahfud highlighted the current generation’s difficulties in finding jobs or business opportunities due to the persistent practices of corruption, collusion, and nepotism.

“If you want to apply for a government job but don’t have connections, you get sidelined. If you want to apply to the police, they ask for money. You’re reported for slander when you don’t pass and ask for your money back. You could even go to prison,” Professor Mahfud said.

Additionally, he pointed out how young people struggle to obtain business permits due to complicated bureaucracy.

“Young entrepreneurs or startups go to Singapore or Dubai for permits instead of to the government. They get it in one day. Of course, the taxes go there. In our own country, we face discrimination and unfair treatment, weakening unity,” he explained.

According to Professor Mahfud, the strength of corruption, collusion, and nepotism can weaken the spirit of unity and patriotism among the younger generation, especially since they are not participants in the independence struggle.

The sense of nationalism and love for the homeland is vastly different from that of the freedom fighters.

“We didn’t participate in the war. The historical actors are almost gone. The current generation communicates with Western ideas. Therefore, this new generation has new needs that a pro-people government must meet,” he said.

Professor Mahfud emphasized that unity among all elements of society is a key factor in Indonesia’s success in building a sovereign nation.

All layers of Indonesian society are responsible for maintaining diversity. This approach will create social justice. Therefore, differences based on primordial ties such as race, ethnicity, and region should no longer be divisive for Indonesia.

After all, the success of the Golden Indonesia program in 2045 also greatly depends on the country’s stability.

Meanwhile, Father Alexius A. Binawan stated that the state plays a vital role in maintaining tolerance among fellow citizens from various races, ethnicities, cultures, and religions through respect, treatment, and recognition.

Dr. Dahliana Hasan, Dean of FH UGM, noted that the Diversity Dialogue was part of the faculty’s 79th anniversary celebration.

“This anniversary opens with a diversity dialogue. The faculty itself reflects diversity, as its lecturers and staff come from different regions with different religions. At the very least, we aim to foster diversity through tolerance and humanity, which can contribute better to society, the nation, and the country,” she concluded.

The opening of the 77th Anniversary (Dies Natalis) celebration series of the UGM Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM) was filled with joy.

The event began with a joint exercise with the FKG UGM academic community and a healthy walk around the health cluster campus.

As one of the oldest and leading faculties in Indonesia, FKG UGM has made significant contributions to education, research, and community service in the field of dentistry.

This Dies Natalis celebration is an important moment for reflection, evaluation, and planning strategic steps to achieve the faculty’s vision and mission in the future.

“Various events will be held during the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM. The most important aspect of all activities is togetherness. We aim to enhance the sense of unity among the academic community and strengthen the relationship between FKG UGM and the public,” said the Dean of FKG UGM, Professor Suryono, at the FKG UGM parking lot on Friday (Jan. 24).

Dean Suryono hopes to increase public awareness of dentistry with this year’s celebration. He emphasized that collaboration, innovation, and integrity are always prioritized in every FKG UGM activity.

“These principles have been the foundation of FKG UGM’s success to this day. We hope that through this Dies Natalis celebration, we can all collectively embrace a brighter future, with a commitment to continue developing dental science and services for the progress of the nation and the country,” he added.

The opening ceremony was marked by the cutting of a tumpeng by the Dean of FKG, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FKKMK UGM), the Dean of Pharmacy, faculty leaders, lecturers, students, and staff within the health cluster.

The event was enlivened by the opening of Pasar Kangen, tug-of-war competitions, Angguk dance performances, music by lecturers and students, and the distribution of door prizes.

Dr. Isti Rahayu Suryani, as the organizing committee chairperson, stated that the theme for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM is “Digital Dentistry: Enhancing Efficiency in Indonesia’s Health Transformation.”

She believes that increasing her understanding of Digital Dentistry will provide deeper insights into the development of digital technology in dentistry.

“Of course, this poses a challenge—how to implement such technology to improve the efficiency and quality of dental health services in Indonesia,” she explained.

Dr. Suryani expressed her hopes that the series of events for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM would strengthen the relationship between FKG UGM and the community. The academic community of FKG UGM is expected to build closer ties with the wider community, particularly in the field of dentistry.

“We aim to increase the faculty’s tangible contribution to advancing the health sector in Indonesia. Through this Dies Natalis, we hope that FKG UGM can make a significant contribution to the progress of dentistry in Indonesia, which is in line with the current digital transformation,” she added.

Following the opening, a number of events are set to enliven the 77th Dies Natalis celebration of FKG UGM.

These include community service activities in the form of outreach conducted by all elements of the academic community of FKG UGM on Feb. 8, 2025, in Pagilaran, Central Java.

There will also be a Fun Run and Family Gathering on Feb. 22, 2025. The Fun Run, themed “Together in Healthy Steps,” is expected to be a sports event that fosters camaraderie and strengthens family ties.

Meanwhile, the FKG UGM Family Gathering will be a reunion event that strengthens the bonds between alumni, the extended family, and the academic community of FKG UGM.

The Dies Natalis event will be highlighted by a Symposium, Hands-on Workshop, and Dental Exhibition on Feb. 27 and 28, 2025, at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK UGM).

Around 500 participants are expected to attend, including students, dental hygienists, dentists, dental specialists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of dentistry.

Other activities include a spiritual gathering (tirakatan) and a communal iftar on Mar. 4, 2025, in the OECF Building Atrium.

The climax of the event will be the Open Senate Meeting for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM and a Wayang Orang performance on Mar. 5, 2025, at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium of FKG UGM.

In early January, the Faculty of Psychology at Universitas Gadjah Mada (Psychology UGM) celebrated its 60th anniversary with an open senate meeting on Wednesday (Jan. 8).

The event, held in Room A-203 of the Faculty of Psychology, was attended by faculty members, non-teaching staff, and student representatives from undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

UGM Rector, Professor Ova Emilia, expressed deep appreciation for the Faculty of Psychology’s consistent contributions and innovations through education, research, and community service.

This commitment has positioned Psychology UGM as a role model for other psychology faculties in Indonesia.

“I hope Psychology UGM can also contribute to curriculum analysis for the next decade, considering the advancement of Artificial Intelligence,” she stated.

Dean of Psychology UGM, Dr. Rahmat Hidayat, reported on the faculty’s achievements over the past year, including student and faculty achievements, student welfare services, research projects, partnerships, innovations, and community service.

“We aspire for Psychology UGM to become a national pioneer in psychology with international standards, advancing high science in line with the nation’s culture and Pancasila,” he remarked.

He also thanked all those who actively participated in the anniversary celebrations, noting that six decades of excellence symbolize the faculty’s commitment to making a real contribution to the nation.

“May the spirit of unity and innovation continue to thrive, helping to improve our QS World University ranking,” he hoped.

Professor Koentjoro delivered a scientific oration titled “Leading the Future Leaders of the Nation to Indonesia Emas: The Role of Psychology in Nation-Building.”

This lecture resulted from Professor Koentjoro’s long reflection on the challenges Indonesian youth face, who are expected to be agents of change. He warned that without proper management, Indonesia Emas (the Golden Generation of Indonesia) could become Indonesia Cemas (the Anxious Generation of Indonesia).

“In many lectures, talks, and discussions, I often tell young people, ‘You are my future.’ This phrase is a recognition of their role as future leaders and a reminder of their responsibilities,” he explained.

Professor Koentjoro highlighted psychology’s crucial role in guiding youth towards Indonesia Emas through youth assessment, modern parenting systems, determining the quality of human resources needed, and providing mental, spiritual, and psychological empowerment.

Additionally, he emphasized the need for intensive mentoring to ensure that youth do not become overly focused on the virtual world at the expense of reality.

As a closing remark, Professor Koentjoro reminded students not to view knowledge, especially religious knowledge, merely as information but to live by it as values that positively impact their lives.

Following the meeting, a celebration was held in the Hall of Building D. Dharma Wanita Persatuan (DWP) from Psychology UGM attended the event, which featured congratulatory remarks from Dr. Noor Siti Rahmani, a retired faculty member.

She hoped Psychology UGM would foster a global research culture. Novita Dewi Anjarsari, representing the faculty’s non-teaching staff, also expressed pride and gratitude for contributing to the nation’s educational journey.

As part of the long history of Psychology UGM, the dean presented the Senate Chair, Professor Subandi, with a symbolic handover of an anthology containing the history of psychology disciplines and institutional history.

During the celebration, the Deputy Chair of DWP, Ratna Syifa’a Rachmahana, made a symbolic presentation of Dharma Wanita Persatuan Psychology Unit (DWP UP) scholarships for the children of outsourced staff.

The faculty’s latest innovation, the Gadjah Mada Computer Adaptive Test (GamaCAT), was also introduced. The celebration concluded with door prize giveaways, traditional karawitan music, a performance by the winner of Psychology Got Talent, and a shared lunch.

Indonesia’s Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Anggito Abimanyu, stated that Indonesia aims to become a developed country by achieving 7 to 8% annual national economic growth.

He noted that this goal is achievable, given Indonesia’s abundant natural resources, which could be well-utilized with effective management.

“In the energy sector, we’ve fallen behind for a few years, yet if we look at our energy resources, Indonesia has substantial reserves,” Dr. Abimanyu said during a keynote address on national educational and industrial agendas at the 15th Anniversary of the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM), held on Monday (Oct. 28) in the TILC Ballroom, SV UGM.

According to the deputy minister, state-owned energy companies, such as Pertamina and the National Electricity Company (PLN), fully manage the current energy transition agenda.

President Prabowo seeks to strengthen these institutions to adequately meet the nation’s energy needs.

Indonesia produces around 600 million barrels annually, while demand stands at 1.5 million and continues to grow annually.

“Companies like Pertamina and PLN need the strongest talent, so it’s the duty of universities to provide competitive human resources,” the deputy minister added.

Ahead of Indonesia’s 2030 demographic dividend, Dr. Abimanyu highlighted the potential crisis from an unutilized working-age population peak.

He sees SV UGM as an agent of change in shaping competitive and innovative human resources and hopes that UGM will expand educational opportunities to reach rural communities.

“We hope young, talented individuals can emerge and create without economic barriers,” he said.

UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia emphasized the need for SV UGM to increase its capacity, as vocational education bridges higher education and industry through various collaborations.

Currently, SV UGM partners with 370 industry and institutional collaborators.

“Two key areas for vocational schools are technology adaptation and aligning competencies to meet industry challenges,” said the rector.

She added that SV UGM graduates are prepared to meet industry needs and create business opportunities and entrepreneurship.

“The younger generation will be able to innovate and establish new jobs based on current technologies,” she noted.

Dean of SV UGM Professor Agus Maryono presented annual achievements, including increased student enrollment and a 60.7% participation rate in MBKM internship programs involving 628 students.

“This reflects SV UGM’s commitment to providing practical industry education for its students,” he said.

The anniversary event, attended by university and faculty leadership, also welcomed Nicke Widyawati, President and Director of PT Pertamina, and Adi Priyanto, Director of Distribution at PT PLN Indonesia.

PT Pertamina awarded a grant for a mini auditorium at SV UGM, while PT PLN provided funds for a Collaborative Space renovation. Both contribute to enhancing education quality and fostering a generation of competitive and innovative professionals.

The UGM Graduate School (SPs UGM) celebrated its 41st anniversary on Thursday (Oct. 17) at the Auditorium of the SPs Building.

In her report, the Dean of SPs, Professor Siti Malkhamah, highlighted various achievements that SPs UGM has attained over the past year.

Professor Malkhamah reported that SPs UGM has produced 298 publications over the last year, including 122 national and 176 international publications.

These publications include Book Chapters, Books, Journals, Intellectual Property Rights, and Proceedings.

“The highest number of publications was in Journals. Meanwhile, the number of international publications exceeds that of national publications,” Professor Malkhamah explained.

Regarding international collaboration, Professor Malkhamah noted that UGM’s achievements on the global stage are commendable.

SPs UGM has successfully established international partnerships with universities from different countries, including National Cheng Chi University, the University of Dundee, Universiti Teknologi MARA, and the University of Girona.

Students have also accomplished various things in different fields.

Among them are Suci Dwi Monda, who secured 3rd place in the ANGEL International Innovation Competition held at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and Azmi Zaki Waliudin Althaf, who was selected for a traineeship program at the University of Helsinki.

Melania Hanny also participated in the International Training Course “Karst & Climate Change” in China, which was organized by the International Research Center on Karst (IRCK).

“The reputation of SPs UGM in the international arena is quite impressive. Various activities and achievements have been marked by all members of the SPs academic community at the international level,” she stated.

Professor Ahmad Maryudi from the UGM Faculty of Forestry, recognized as one of the World’s Top two percent of Scientists, emphasized the importance of scientific research as the foundation of a knowledge-based economy.

He highlighted that scientific research is crucial to achieving mastery of science and technology. As articulated in his scientific oration, this mastery subsequently becomes a fundamental pillar for national development.

However, in practice, researchers often encounter obstacles in their research development, especially regarding funding, which affects the availability of adequate equipment, leading to less quality data.

“In the end, the conclusions drawn become less accurate,” he revealed.

According to Professor Maryudi, to address the challenges of research and publication development, universities need an innovative leadership model that can facilitate transformation and facilitate researchers’ conduct of studies.

“To promote research excellence, an innovative leadership model must facilitate transformation and break away from constraining traditions. Universities must be willing to take risks to seize opportunities, creating flexibility in the management of higher education institutions,” Professor Maryudi asserted.

Around 1,850 participants, comprising 1,450 members of the public and 400 guests and members of the UGM Faculty of Forestry, took part in the Forestry Run on Sunday (Oct. 13) at the Faculty of Forestry’s grounds.

This healthy running event was divided into two categories: 5 kilometers and 10 kilometers. It took place on routes around the eastern campus of UGM. While running, all participants could explore the campus environment.

Thousands of participants in this fun run, including children, teenagers, adults, and even individuals with disabilities, were part of the celebrations for the 61st anniversary of the Faculty of Forestry. Participants were not required to run the entire route but could also stroll.

The run began at 5:30 AM and was officially opened by the Vice-Rector for Planning, Assets, and Information Systems, Dr. Arief Setiawan Budi Nugroho, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Sigit Sunarta, and the Chief Organizer of Forestry Run 2024, Dr. Hero Marhaento.

Dr. Nugroho stated that this running event promotes running to maintain health and raises awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

“This running activity commemorating the anniversary of the Faculty of Forestry also emphasizes our concern for forestry, as forests provide oxygen,” he explained.

He reminded everyone to maintain their health while participating energetically in the run. He hoped all participants would complete the route.

Dr. Sunarta mentioned that this Fun Run is part of the 61st-anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Forestry and serves as a gathering for running enthusiasts within the UGM community and the general public.

Meanwhile, Dr. Marhaento expressed hopes that this inaugural running event at the Faculty of Forestry would motivate the community to adopt healthy lifestyles and that such events would be regularly held in the coming years.

“We hope to increase public enthusiasm for sports and promote healthy living through running, making it a routine event at the Faculty of Forestry,” he stated.

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FMIPA UGM) held the FMIPA UGM Reunion Night 2024, part of the 69th-anniversary celebrations, on Saturday (Sep. 14) at the FMIPA UGM Auditorium.

This event aimed to reunite FMIPA UGM alumni and strengthen their connections while reminiscing about their time with the faculty.

From 6 PM until midnight, the evening featured various entertainment and culinary delights, such as Javanese noodles, cotton candy, and sweet treats. Alumni from various cohorts attended, and the Dean of FMIPA UGM, Professor Kuwat Triyana, expressed pride in their presence.

“Coming from all over Indonesia, including Jakarta and Nusa Tenggara, we are honored by the attendance of our senior alumni tonight.”

In line with the anniversary theme, “Innovation for Downstream: Realizing National Independence through Science and Technology,” Professor Triyana mentioned that FMIPA UGM has established a speed-up company as an incubator and accelerator that is expected to produce various startups in the future.

The event continued with performances, including creative dances, band performances by students and alumni, door prize distributions, quizzes, a choir, recognition for outstanding students, inspirational talks from alumni, and a ketoprak (traditional Javanese drama).

One of the highlights was the ketoprak titled “Suminten Bukan Siti Nurbaya,” which tells the story of Suminten (Bella, a Mathematics student at FMIPA UGM) being arranged to marry the elderly Den Mono (Professor Harno Dwi Pranowo), who has four wives.

However, Suminten has a boyfriend and wants to pursue her master’s degree at FMIPA UGM first, a plan initially opposed by her father (Professor Triyana), who ultimately relents upon understanding her intentions.

In a unique conclusion to the performance, all attendees and cast members lit their phone flashlights while singing “Happy Birthday” to Professor Triyana, whose birthday coincided with the event.

The UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) has opened a series of events for its 69th anniversary on Friday (Sept. 13) in the Fisipol campus hallway.

This year’s theme is “Strengthening Social Initiatives in Response to Democratic Backsliding, Digital Disruption, and the Climate Crisis.” The theme was chosen based on Fisipol UGM’s three flagship focuses aimed at advancing national progress.

In her opening speech, Dr. Fina Itriyati, Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni, stated that this year’s anniversary theme aligns with UGM’s overall theme.

“This anniversary celebration is hoped to be more than just a festivity; it should inspire us to become more environmentally conscious,” Dr. Itriyati explained.

She noted that UGM’s initiatives to raise awareness about environmental issues, such as climate change, can be implemented through various university programs, such as reducing plastic use and promoting the use of reusable water bottles.

Dr. Itriyati elaborated that over its 69 years, Fisipol UGM has focused on responding to issues of democracy, digital transformation, energy transition, and green society. This commitment is realized through discussions, policy frameworks, and community service.

Fisipol UGM’s 69th-anniversary events will include panel discussions with political figures and analysts, sports weeks, and a book launch in December.

“I believe this is also an effort to help safeguard democracy and other issues like climate change,” she clarified.

The anniversary opening event began with a healthy exercise session, with all staff enthusiastically participating.

This was followed by a tumpeng decoration competition among Fisipol UGM work units. Participants were required to decorate tumpeng creatively. Each unit sent 4-5 representatives to compete for attractive prizes.

In addition to the exercise and tumpeng competition, Fisipol UGM collaborated with local MSMEs to host a Market Day and Anniversary Bazaar.

Out of 93 applicants, 15 brands were selected to set up booths at the Market Day, offering a variety of food and beverages, including bakpia, sushi, and typical Jogja souvenirs.

The Anniversary Bazaar featured environmentally friendly products from local entrepreneurs. The stands were bustling with students and the academic community of Fisipol UGM.
