Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has opened admissions for new students through the International Undergraduate Program (IUP).

The admission process for this pathway, which has a quota of 1,114 students across 29 study programs, will be divided into three phases.

Phase 1 registration will be open from Feb. 14 to 18, 2025, followed by an offline exam held from Feb. 27 to Mar. 2. The results will be announced on Mar. 6, 2025.

The Secretary of the UGM Directorate of Education and Teaching, Dr. Sigit Priyanta, stated that the IUP allows students to achieve competitive excellence through a rigorous selection system.

“We want to ensure that every student who passes is the best individual capable of contributing globally,” he explained on Monday (Jan. 27).

Dr. Priyanta hopes prospective students interested in enrolling at UGM through this international class can access information about the IUP pathway, understand the registration procedures, and prepare thoroughly.

“Further information regarding the 2025 IUP enrollment at UGM can be accessed through the official UGM website or the university’s social media accounts,” he said.

According to Dr. Priyanta, one advantage of the IUP pathway is its ability to prepare competent graduates who can compete globally.

“IUP is designed to provide an internationally based learning experience, including mandatory international exposure such as student exchange or double degree programs,” he added.

Prospective students for the IUP must be recent high school graduates or equivalent with a diploma.

They must also have good English proficiency (TOEFL score of 500-550 or equivalent), pass the Gadjah Mada Scholastic Test (GMST), and be willing to undergo further selection based on the chosen study program.

The selection process is divided into two categories based on the study program. For the Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM), the selection process uses report card scores, UTBK scores, CBT scores, and proof of English proficiency.

Meanwhile, the selection process for programs outside FT UGM uses English and scholastic tests (AcEPT and GMST).

The 29 study programs at UGM offering the IUP pathway include Biology, Accounting, Management, Economics, Pharmacy, Environmental Geography, Veterinary Medicine, Law, International Relations, Communication Studies, Public Policy and Management, Medicine, and Psychology.

The IUP is also available in Civil Infrastructure Management Technology, Statistics, Electronics and Instrumentation, Computer Science, Chemistry, Mathematics, Animal Science and Industry, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Geodetic Engineering, Geological Engineering, Information Technology, Industrial Engineering, and Urban and Regional Planning.

Interested in earning a bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting in a shorter time? If so, you might consider applying for the Fast-Track Master of Science (M.Sc) in Accounting program at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM).

This program is designed to accelerate the completion of both undergraduate (S1) and graduate (S2) degrees within five years.

Besides shortening the study duration for both degrees, the Fast-Track Master of Science in Accounting program also offers scholarships, reducing tuition fees by up to 50 percent.

Scholarship recipients are required to serve as teaching assistants during their studies.

Dr. Fu’ad Rakhman, the Head of the Master of Science in Accounting program, explained that the undergraduate program generally takes four years, and the master’s program lasts between two to three years.

The fast-track program allows students to complete both degrees simultaneously in a shorter period.

He noted that this program was first offered in the even semester of the 2023/2024 academic year, specifically in February 2024.

“The fast-track program aims to facilitate undergraduate students who possess strong academic abilities, motivation to continue their studies, a high commitment to timely completion, and involvement in research and publications,” Dr. Rakhman explained at FEB UGM on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025.

Dr. Rakhman elaborated that the fast-track program is designed to equip students with strong writing skills through courses such as Scientific Writing and Publication Workshops.

The curriculum is structured to help students graduate successfully and produce writing, whether simple or scientific.

Graduates of this program have career opportunities in the industry and government sectors, in addition to becoming academics and researchers.

Survey results show that about one-third of graduates pursue careers as academics, while the majority enter non-academic fields.

“The skills taught are proven to be relevant and applicable to various sectors, allowing graduates to contribute broadly,” he said.

For scholarship recipients, Dr. Rakhman mentioned that the scholarships not only ease financial burdens but also provide valuable experience supporting faculty academic activities.

The fast-track program also offers a streamlined process for developing an undergraduate thesis based on a literature review, which is then expanded into a master’s thesis.

“The linearity between the thesis and master’s thesis topics, supported by the assignment of the same supervising professor, ensures that students receive consistent guidance throughout their studies. We maintain quality from the input stage and align students with supervisors and thesis topics within the same area. The goal is for them to complete both programs successfully and on time,” Dr. Rakhman added.

Furthermore, Dr. Rakhman explained that the fast-track program is available to undergraduate accounting students in their sixth or seventh semester.

These students are expected to have completed all courses except the thesis and have a GPA of at least 3.50 at the time of application.

Other requirements include a minimum score of 550 on the Academic Potential Test (TPA) and an English proficiency test score of at least 500, both valid for up to two years.

Prospective fast-track students must also submit additional documents, such as recommendation letters from two professors who have taught them in the courses they’ve passed.

Other administrative documents include a letter of approval from the student’s parents.

Interested applicants are expected to go through several stages before being accepted into the Fast-Track Master of Science in Accounting program.

“The application process begins with filling out a form and submitting documents to the admissions office. The study program will then review the files, and applicants will undergo an interview stage to ensure alignment between the topics of their undergraduate thesis and master’s thesis,” he explained.

Dr. Rakhman added that registration for this program is open in four rounds each academic year.

FEB UGM’s Master of Science and Doctoral (MD) programs also invite outstanding students to join through this fast-track program.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a promotional event on Thursday (Nov. 7) at the University of Yangon (UY), Myanmar, for its international degree programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

The visit was led by UGM Vice-Rector for Education and Learning, Professor Wening Udasmoro, Secretary of the Directorate of Education and Learning, Dr. Sigit Priyanta, and faculty representatives, including Vice-Dean for Academic and Student Affairs of the Faculty of Biology, Dr. Bambang Retnoaji.

The visit began with a courtesy meeting with the rector and university leadership, during which they discussed plans for developing collaboration in art and science.

The occasion also featured an information session on UGM’s international postgraduate programs for UY’s final-year students and staff.

“Myanmar marks UGM’s initial step in offering opportunities for students from the Southeast Asia region with various scholarship schemes available. In the near future, UGM will also visit Timor-Leste, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam next year,” said Professor Udasmoro.

The enthusiasm for the event continued into the second day, Friday (Nov. 8), when it was held in a hybrid format and divided into two sessions.

The morning session invited school principals, parents, and high school students for a presentation on the International Undergraduate Programs (IUPs).

Higher education leaders, staff, and students attended the afternoon session to learn about postgraduate programs. Scholarships were the most frequently asked topic, along with questions regarding campus facilities, the registration system, tuition fees, and other aspects.

The day-long event concluded with an alumni gathering, where 18 of the 52 UGM alumni in Myanmar attended.

“This event serves as a platform to keep alumni connected with their alma mater and to enhance the role of alumni in supporting the university’s reputation,” said Professor Udasmoro.

UGM’s visit to Myanmar received full support from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Yangon. The Charge d’Affaires Ad Interim of KBRI Yangon, M. Arif Hidayatullah, along with the Education, Social, and Cultural Attaché, Harlianto, welcomed UGM’s delegation in promoting the programs.

“UGM’s visit not only strengthens UGM-Myanmar collaboration in the field of tri-dharma but also serves as a good practice model for other institutions,” said Hidayatullah.

More than half, or 61.5 percent, of the 333 new students at the UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) have received Single Tuition Fee (UKT) Subsidies.

“More than 60 percent of new students receive UKT subsidies,” said the Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. R. Ahmad Romadhoni Surya Putra, in a statement to reporters on Wednesday (Aug. 14).

According to Dr. Putra, providing UKT subsidies for new students reflects Animal Science UGM’s commitment to ensuring the continuity of education for the nation’s youth.

“Everyone still has the opportunity to study at Animal Science UGM, even if there are financial challenges,” he added.

Dr. Putra detailed that 205 new students received subsidized UKT. This includes 74 students receiving a 25 percent UKT subsidy, 77 students with a 50 percent subsidy, 49 with a 75 percent subsidy, and five with a 100 percent subsidy.

Animal Science UGM Dean, Professor Budi Guntoro, emphasized the importance of being active in organizations to the new students. He noted that participating in organizations helps students develop important soft skills, such as courage, perseverance, communication, and adaptability.

“During their studies, students will also receive numerous scholarship offers in collaboration with industries and alumni,” the dean said.

A total of 30 UGM students with disabilities received orientation before starting their regular classes. This event aimed to foster connections between new and returning students and provided them with information about support and facilities available to aid their studies at UGM.

Professor Wening Udasmoro, UGM Vice-Rector for Education and Teaching, stated that Universitas Gadjah Mada warmly welcomes new students with disabilities.

She noted that UGM has seen a steady increase in the acceptance of new students with disabilities each year. For the new academic year of 2024, UGM has admitted 21 new students with disabilities, which is an increase compared to previous years.

“UGM continues to improve in accepting new students with disabilities. This number does not yet include those hidden and have not reported for various reasons,” she said at the UGM Wellbeing Center on Friday (Aug. 9).

Professor Udasmoro highlighted that the growing number of new students with disabilities shows that UGM is open to everyone. Universitas Gadjah Mada provides equal opportunities because everyone has the right to pursue higher education.

According to her, the most important thing for students at UGM is their happiness. The meet and greet event for new students with disabilities is crucial as it allows them to get to know each other and connect.

“We are grateful that the Disability Service Unit (ULD) this year has been approved by the Academic Senate and MWA as a service unit for the UGM academic community. Hopefully, this ensures that UGM members receive the best service so that teaching, research, and administrative processes can run smoothly,” she said.

Dr. Wuri Handayani, a lecturer in the Department of Accounting at UGM and the supervisor of the UGM Disability Service Unit, expressed similar sentiments. She expressed gratitude for establishing the Unit, which was officially recognized under Rector’s Regulation No. 19 of 2024.

“The ULD is part of UGM that provides services, support, and facilities for individuals with disabilities,” she explained.

Dr. Handayani described the services offered by the ULD UGM, including assessments to analyze the need for reasonable accommodations. These accommodations involve appropriate modifications and adjustments to ensure that all human rights and fundamental freedoms are enjoyed and implemented equally for individuals with disabilities.

“We typically provide assistance, usually during registration, selection, coursework/practical work, community service, final projects, and other activities. We also research disability-related issues,” Dr. Handayani said.

She also expressed her gratitude for the presence of the Peduli Difabel Student Activity Unit, which is a key pillar in ULD services. The principles of providing services and interacting with individuals with disabilities include equity, mutual respect, disclosure, confidentiality, and good practice.

“Therefore, we hope that our friends have strong character traits such as confidence, independence, self-advocacy, creative and critical thinking, and inclusiveness,” she added.

Agnia Dwi Permana, the head of Peduli Difabel, noted that the meet and greet event for new disabled students at UGM is an effort to socialize various services available to them, both academic and non-academic.

Permana explained that Peduli Difabel has been active for 11 years, striving to help and ensure students with disabilities receive their rights. The student unit has seven departments that actively collaborate to raise awareness of disability rights.

“Currently, besides advocacy, we are running two ongoing programs: the Sign Language Program and the Kastrat on the Street Program,” she said.

Permana mentioned the Kastrat on the Street program was a new initiative for Peduli Difabel in 2023. Through this program, the student unit evaluates the facilities available in UGM’s faculties to ensure accessibility and inclusivity, particularly video-related facilities for communicating with students with disabilities.

“We assess whether these facilities are accessible and inclusive, especially for video recording used to communicate with our disabled friends,” she explained.

The meet and greet event also connected students and UGM leadership. Many disabled students took the opportunity to voice their concerns and provide feedback for the university to address.

A total of 10,678 new students of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) created various celebratory formations during the closing ceremony of PIONIR Gadjah Mada 2024 on Saturday (Aug. 3) at Pancasila Field.

Using four colored papers on their heads, the students flipped them to form various shapes, such as the “steps of progress” image, the UGM gate, the UGM mosque gate, and the “collaboration of Indonesia’s excellent generation” text.

The formations conveyed messages about the steps and the beginning of the new UGM students, known as Gamada, in achieving the nation’s noble values, becoming initiators of unity, and broadening their knowledge.

Through the inspirational efforts of the Gamada, it is hoped that UGM will serve as the gateway to the nation’s glory by building a superior generation of Indonesians.

As has been the tradition since 2012, the formation celebration moment conducted by new students during the closing ceremony of UGM’s PIONIR is highly anticipated.

The new students involved in creating the formation were unaware of the final shape they would make. They only knew to flip the colored papers on their heads according to the committee’s instructions.

The entire committee felt a sense of emotion once the formation celebration was completed.

Audy, one of the co-facilitators of PIONIR Gadjah Mada 2024, who had been accompanying the new students throughout the event, said, “I am touched, happy, and proud of the Gamada who quickly and accurately understood the mechanism of the celebration.”

The new students also shared their feelings about the formation celebration.

“I am thrilled, even though it was tiring. Seeing the formation was very touching,” said Quenna, a new student from the Biology program.

Afa, a new student from the Economics program, expressed similar feelings.

“I was a bit nervous because I feared making mistakes during the formation. But I felt relieved once it was over and I saw the formation. I was surprised at how beautiful it looked,” he said.

Kemal, the Event Coordinator of PIONIR Gadjah Mada 2024, revealed that this year’s theme for the formation celebration represents the first page in the PIONIR Gadjah Mada book, transforming from the previous name PPSMB Universitas Gadjah Mada.

“The theme is representative of the initial visualization presented in the formation celebration. We hope this first page serves as the starting point for Gamada in their academic journey at UGM,” he said.

He added that preparing the idea for this celebration took about five months, initially using Big Data formation assistance. He admitted to being very nervous and anxious during the formation, which he executed without prior practice, only during the campus orientation closing.

“Thanks to the cooperation and determination of the entire committee, the formation was successfully carried out,” Kemal proudly stated.

Kemal, representing the entire PIONIR Gadjah Mada 2024 committee, hopes the new students can have memorable experiences throughout the PIONIR activities.

“I hope the new students will enthusiastically approach their academic journey,” he concluded.

Talented singer Putri Ariani, a new UGM Faculty of Law student, enlivened the 2024 PIONIR Gadjah Mada Muda closing ceremony on Saturday (Aug. 3) at the Pancasila field.

Putri Ariani performed two of her songs, “Mimpiku” and “Who I Am,” along with a special song dedicated by the PIONIR Gadjah Mada committee.

Additionally, UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia, Vice Rector Professor Wening Udasmoro, and Head of the Strategic Management Bureau, Dr. Wirastuti Widyatmanti, presented a collaborative rendition of “UGM Kampusku Tercinta,” composed by Agus Wahyudi.

One characteristic of the closing activities of the UGM campus orientation period from year to year is the formation. However, this year’s PIONIR Gadjah Mada introduced an idea for an interactive celebratory formation using four colors, themed “Gadjah Mada Collaboration: A Superior Generation of Indonesia.”

Vice-Rector for Student Affairs, Community Service, and Alumni Dr. Arie Sujito expressed his hope that the new students, known as Gamada, will embrace a spirit of collaboration, accompanied by a strong desire to enhance their quality and benefit others.

“The PIONIR Gadjah Mada event provides a foundation for students to become pioneers and initiators in both academic and non-academic environments, fostering a sense of care, sensitivity, and high empathy towards fellow academics and their surroundings,” he said.

Dr. Sujito added that as Gamada, they are expected to uphold the motto of “Sang Juara” as the crystallization of Gadjah Mada’s values. He also reminded them to remain adaptive and make greater contributions to society in the future.

The closing of PIONIR Gadjah Mada was symbolized by the placement of a chess miniature by the UGM Rector and the General Coordinator of PIONIR Gadjah Mada.

Alhamdulillah, PIONIR Gadjah Mada 2024 is officially closed, and with bismillah, the Action Plan is initiated,” concluded Professor Emilia.

The Action Plan will be carried out as a form of real action by Gamada for society from Aug. 4–10, 2024. This activity aims to provide a creative space and realize tangible and beneficial ideas for the community by implementing UGM’s values.

The Action Plan also manifests UGM’s commitment to waste management and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“50.12 percent of you have received UKT scholarships, and 13.32% of those received the UKT 0 scholarship. This is a remarkable achievement and proof of FEB UGM’s commitment to providing equitable and quality education access to all segments of society,” the dean stated.

As part of UGM, FEB is firmly committed to enhancing inclusivity by providing equal education access to all members of society.

“FEB UGM is committed to offering equitable education access to the community, including those with economic, social, or geographical vulnerabilities, as part of our effort to realize fair and equal education,” he said.

Professor Achjari added that by offering equal opportunities to everyone, FEB UGM aims to build a more just and prosperous society by providing the chance to pursue higher education, thus creating a better future for all the nation’s children.

On this occasion, FEB UGM also acknowledged the 49.89 percent of parents of new students who are financially capable and fully fund their children’s education without UKT scholarships.

“The full support of these parents not only brings pride but also significantly contributes to the realization of excellent and quality education at FEB UGM,” he said.

Professor Achjari stated that FEB UGM is committed to nurturing future leaders in economics and business, focusing on sustainability. With a constantly updated, future-oriented curriculum and the support of competent faculty, he is confident that FEB UGM can produce graduates who are not only intellectually smart but also possess high integrity and social awareness.

“We believe that you, our new students, are the young pioneers who will bring positive change to the nation and the world,” he concluded.

Self-potential is the unique set of individual qualities, including strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and opportunities. To discover it, one must first understand themselves by seeking as many experiences as possible.

This theme was highlighted during the Inspirational Student Talk Show, held on Thursday (Aug. 1) at the Tahir Foundation Postgraduate Building, UGM Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK UGM), as part of the Pionir Morfogenesis series.

The talk show featured three outstanding students and alumni from various programs within FK-KMK UGM. They shared their stories and experiences, hoping to inspire the new class of 2024.

The three speakers were Brian Arianto Tanuwidjaja from the Medicine program, Kartika Arivia Khairunnisa from the Nutrition and Health program, and Syafira Izza Azzahra Adani from the Nursing program.

Syafira Adani shared tips on exploring and developing one’s potential through self-management, time management, and other strategies for achieving academic and non-academic success from each speaker’s perspective and experience.

According to Adani, the potential is a unique trait in every individual. To discover it, we must first understand ourselves.

“The way to do this is by gaining a lot of experience. Take a chance, and frequently engage in self-reflection. We should know what we like and are good at and continue to delve into that to learn more,” Adani said.

Kartika Arivia Khairunnisa also shared her tips as an outstanding student, emphasizing the importance of having clear goals and good time management, especially for those studying at FK-KMK UGM.

“As we know, at FK-KMK UGM, no matter the program, we are always pressed for time, and sometimes, for us in Medicine, Nutrition and Health, or Nursing, 24 hours in a day just isn’t enough. So, it’s about how we manage our time,” Khairunnisa explained.

Brian Tanuwidjaja mentioned that failure is the best teacher. He shared his experience of failing to participate in the IISMA student exchange program, trusting that it might not have been meant for him. However, he remained hopeful and trusted in God’s plan.

These outstanding students also emphasized the importance of maintaining mental health during learning to achieve academic and non-academic success.
