In recent decades, technological advances have transformed the way people understand, diagnose, and treat various medical conditions.

Biomedical engineering, an interdisciplinary field combining engineering principles with biological and medical sciences, is now enhancing healthcare services.

From advanced medical devices to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in diagnostics, biomedical technology continues to pave the way for innovations that save lives and improve the quality of life worldwide.

Highlighting the great potential of biomedical engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering, UGM Faculty of Engineering (FT UGM), held a Biomedical Engineering Symposium on Thursday (Nov. 14) at the Auditorium of Professor Roosseno Soerjohadikoesoemo Building.

The event, themed ‘Strengthening the Role of P2TBI in Fostering Synergy Between Biomedical Engineering Education and Indonesia’s Health Sector,’ aimed to promote collaboration between education and healthcare.

Professor Selo, Dean of FT UGM, noted in his remarks that the biomedical engineering market is projected to experience significant growth by 2030.

He emphasized the great opportunities for Indonesia to contribute globally to health technology innovation.

“The collaboration between biomedical engineering education and the health sector is essential to improving healthcare quality in Indonesia,” he stated.

However, despite the increasing demand for medical devices in Indonesia, the country remains largely dependent on imports, making it crucial to encourage synergy between biomedical engineering education and the healthcare sector.

Professor Tri Arief Sardjono, Chair of the Indonesian Biomedical Engineering Study Association (P2TBI), highlighted two main challenges faced by the domestic medical device industry.

The first is the weak ecosystem for medical device production, from raw materials to supporting industries, and the second is the unclear distinction between the education levels of biomedical technicians (applied bachelors) and biomedical engineers (bachelors).

“Educational institutions must focus on equipping students with the appropriate competencies, as their roles will differ. Competency certification can be facilitated by institutions such as the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP),” explained Professor Sardjono.

Professor Sri Suning Kusumawardani, Director of Learning and Student Affairs, Directorate General of Higher Education, stressed the importance of artificial intelligence literacy for biomedical engineering students to face global challenges, particularly in ethics and security.

She also emphasized the need to distribute biomedical engineering study programs more evenly across the country so that this sector’s contributions can be felt throughout Indonesia.

“We need to strengthen technological literacy, especially AI, to respond to changes in the job landscape influenced by automation. Education must be responsive to global trends,” she said.

Professor of Biomedical Engineering at FT UGM, Hanung Adi Nugroho, underscored the urgency of forming professional associations to support biomedical engineers and ensure their competencies are recognized through certifications such as the Electromedical Registration Certificate (STR-E).

“This formal certification guarantees the competency standards of biomedical engineering graduates in line with the needs of healthcare institutions,” he remarked.

In addition to exploring the challenges and opportunities in the future of biomedical engineering, the event featured distinguished guest lectures. Masumi Taki, Associate Professor at the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) Tokyo, presented on the development of Biomolecular Targeted Covalent Inhibitors (BioTCI).

Meanwhile, Ts. Dr. Mohd Ibrahim Shapiai, Associate Professor and Director of CAIRO at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), shared valuable insights into biomedical engineering curricula and the potential for cross-border collaboration in educational development.

In the past two years, the UGM Vocational College (SV UGM) has conducted community service activities in the Kulon Progo Regency area, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY).

The SV UGM academic community has implemented programs to improve residents’ economic welfare and reduce poverty rates.

Some programs include IT training, tourism potential development training, providing production machinery for the community, grassroots economic development, and waste management.

Vice Dean for Research and Community Service, Dr. Wiryanta, reported that over the past two years, SV UGM has contributed to reducing poverty and improving the quality of economic growth in Kulon Progo.

“We have carried out community service in 11 villages in Kulon Progo, identified as areas with extreme poverty,” said Dr. Wiryanta during the 2024 National Seminar on Community Service Results (SNH2PM) and Service Expo themed “Innovation for Poverty Reduction and Regional Economic Growth,” Saturday (Nov. 9).

Dr. Wiryanta mentioned that a budget of Rp 1 billion was allocated to carry out the programs in the 11 villages.

“A total of Rp 1,010,000,000 has been disbursed, and 75% of SV UGM’s community service this year took place in Kulon Progo,” Dr. Wiryanta added.

Dean of SV UGM, Professor Agus Maryono, explained that the community service programs aimed to solve social and economic problems in Kulon Progo.

“For example, we assisted the community in creating simple rainwater harvesting systems to address drought issues,” he said.

Professor Maryono added that they also helped the community innovate on MSME products and strengthen business management, mainly targeting the youth.

According to him, SV UGM’s programs align with the new government’s initiatives, such as food self-sufficiency, clean water provision, poverty eradication, and education and health services.

Triyono, from the Secretariat of Kulon Progo Regency, expressed his appreciation for SV UGM’s significant contributions to Kulon Progo’s progress.

He said that this contribution has motivated the government to investigate the technologies developed by SV UGM and apply them to help the community.

Moreover, Triyono also appreciated the presence of UGM’s Field Research Center (FRC) building. He hoped that the building would drive the local economy with the presence of UGM students in Kulon Progo.

During the seminar, Ni Made Dwipanti Indrayanti, the Head of DIY’s Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), mentioned that the poverty rate in DIY has been trending downward each year.

“Data shows the government’s excellent performance in reducing extreme poverty from 2.63% in 2021 to 0.85% in 2024,” said Indrayanti.

The government has implemented several strategies to eradicate extreme poverty, including reducing expenditure burdens, increasing productivity and income, and minimizing poverty-stricken areas.

Amid the rampant environmental degradation and global warming caused by both natural events and human activities, various parties, including academics, must take steps to preserve the Earth.

This includes conserving endangered or nearly extinct plants and animals and developing genetic resources in the food sector.

Professor Taryono of the UGM Faculty of Agriculture emphasized protecting and nurturing genetic resources. Genetic resources play a crucial role in the sustainability of food systems for humans and animals.

To work towards a sustainable food system, it is necessary to consider the factors and impacts involved, including social, economic, and environmental factors.

“We must understand how to maximize and utilize genetic resources for the sustainability of food systems,” said Professor Taryono at the 2024 UGM Annual Scientific Conferences (UASC) held on Oct. 23-24 at the University Club Hotel.

Professor Taryono also highlighted the development of UGM’s genetic resources through the Agro-technology Innovation Center (PIAT UGM) in Kalitirto and Wanagama, which is developing germplasm and superior plant seeds for food and horticulture.

Professor Markus Frank from the University of Nuertingen-Geislingen presented Decision Support System (DSS) tools to help farmers achieve sustainable farming based on the plant life cycle.

His case study in Brazil showed that using DSS tools to produce crops such as corn, cotton, and soybeans resulted in a 50% increase in yield.

These tools are predicted to save more energy and costs in agriculture and plantation efforts. “Sustainable food systems require agroecological intensification in their development,” said Professor Frank.

In her opening remarks, UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia emphasized that the continuous advancements in modern technology, which have transformed human life, require a collective responsibility to maintain the Earth’s sustainability.

She highlighted the importance of collaboration between researchers and professionals worldwide who have contributed significantly to humanity and the environment.

The UASC is known to combine the 10th International Conference on Science and Technology (ICST UGM 2024) and the 5th International Conference on Smart and Innovative Agriculture (ICoSIA UGM 2024).

This year, ICST received 226 submissions from 18 countries, including China, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and others. ICoSIA received 65 submissions from 7 countries, including South Korea, Italy, Hungary, and Japan.

Professor José Sena Cruz (University of Minho), Associate Professor Pankaj Attri (Kyushu University), Professor Cheng-Hao Chuang (Tamkang University), and Dr. Lujia Feng (Nanyang Technological University) were some of the keynote speakers at this event.

Professor Sholihin (Universitas Gadjah Mada), Assistant Professor Gil G. Cruz Jr. (University of the Philippines), and Professor Indriana Kartini (Universitas Gadjah Mada) were invited speakers.

A total of 30 students from the UGM Community Service Program (KKN-PPM UGM) conducted community service activities in Fajar Indah Village, Pulau Besar District, South Bangka Regency, Bangka Belitung Province

This village has potential in agriculture and livestock farming. UGM KKN PPM students organized training sessions and workshops on compost making, silage production, and mineral block creation to harness this potential.

“One untapped potential is the modification of livestock feed, which can optimize existing agricultural and livestock outputs,” said Ahmad Ammar Jiddan, the Subunit Coordinator, on Friday (Aug. 16).

For the agricultural and livestock training activities, the UGM KKN students involved 15 local farmers and village officials, such as the hamlet head and Village Consultative Body (BPD) members, to participate in training sessions and practical workshops on making silage and mineral blocks.

“We invited them to join us in making silage and mineral blocks,” he said.

Mineral blocks are known to provide livestock with essential minerals during pregnancy and lactation. They are made from coarse salt, cement, and water and can be enriched with mineral premixes to enhance their mineral content.

This additional nutrition can help prevent issues such as paralysis caused by calcium deficiency during pregnancy and increase the productivity of dairy cows.

Ari, the head of Hamlet 4, Sumber Jaya Permai, welcomed the hands-on training in compost and livestock feed production, as it provided valuable knowledge and skills to local farmers.

“Such activities are very beneficial, especially when we can exchange ideas about our livestock conditions with KKN students,” he said.

Dr. Panjono, the UGM field supervisor in South Bangka, added that the outreach activities focusing on producing supplementary feed, such as mineral blocks as a mineral source for ruminants, were quite helpful for the community in making their livestock more productive.

“The enthusiasm of the villagers towards making mineral blocks is very high because their livestock are only fed with forage,” Dr. Panjono said.

The Anang Batas exhibition “Fotodidak: Terpanjat Tak Terperanjat” (Photo-didact: Stumbled but Unsurprised) successfully ran for nine days from August 12 to 20, 2023, at UGM.

As the event’s highlight, the closing night was celebrated on Sunday (20/8) with a collaborative stage and a Wayang Tri Brata performance.

“It feels amazing to have put this display together. I feel a strong emotional bond with the campus,” said Anang Batas in his address.

“Since Wisdom Park is the sole urban forest in Jogja, I boldly held my work there for nine days. I hope that through this exhibition, we all at UGM can work together to preserve Indonesia’s richness.”

Anang also expressed his gratitude, humorously thanking the involved team, the entire organizing committee, and fellow alum friends who assisted.

“I want to thank Oblo, who selected 400 photos from the 10,000 I provided. I believe that the atmosphere of this exhibition is not just due to my photos but also because of Oblo’s intelligence. I also want to express gratitude to UGM, Wisdom Park, and others who contributed,” he added.

He acknowledged the Fotodidak exhibition as a creation marked by spontaneity, and it carried significant roles played by various parties. His friends, Dalang Ki Arief Nurcahyo and Encik Sri Krishna & Friends, hosted the wayang performance and acoustic stage.

Ki Arief Nurcahyo, fondly known as Ndan Yok, is the head of the UGM Center for Occupational and Environmental Safety, Health, and Security (PK4L), a position he has held since 2017.

Nurcahyo is a graduate of the UGM Faculty of Psychology and took early retirement as a member of the Indonesian police force. Afterward, he decided to serve UGM as the head of the university’s security unit.

The Wayang Tri Brata performance by Ki Arief Nurcahyo was themed around safety and order, titled “Geger Klitih.” This theme was chosen to symbolize his dedication to providing security within the UGM community and raise awareness among people about the importance of feeling safe and maintaining order.

“Tonight is livelier than the opening. So, I don’t think of this as a closing night, but rather an opening night for us to work together and ascend to the next level,” Anang Batas said.

He hoped that UGM’s successful journey could be realized parallel with efforts to preserve nature.

Universitas Gadjah Mada established cooperation in education, research, and community service with Bina Karya Prima.

The cooperation agreement was signed by Vice-Rector for Research, Business Development, and Cooperation, Ignatius Susatyo Wijoyo, and Director of Human Capital of Bina Karya Prima, Bambang Yapri, on Thursday (9/6).

Ignatius Susatyo Wijoyo said UGM needs support and cooperation from companies, such as Bina Karya Prima, one of the largest FMCG companies in Indonesia.

“UGM is complete; all experts are here. There are 18 faculties and 2 schools. As the most comprehensive university, UGM continues to improve and wants to be closer to the industry, including through the MBKM, so that graduates can be work-ready,” Wijoyo said.

With this cooperation, UGM students are expected to have internship opportunities at Bina Karya Prima. The same hope is also for the exchange between UGM lecturers and practitioners of Bina Karya Prima. Lecturers can be involved in the industry for research and development, whereas experts from Bina Karya Prima can share their professional experiences with UGM.

“There can also be joint research, internship, and apprenticeship programs. So, not only students but lecturers can also participate. Soon we will have an event for inventors,” he said.

The Vice-Rector said that Bina Karya Prima certainly has needs or requirements that UGM can support, primarily in research on new products, product development, etc.

“UGM certainly can support the industry needs, but we don’t know what it needs. This can later be incorporated into the agreement with our research team, or we can have a community service program through CSR or something,” Wijoyo said.

“Another way is involving our SCS-CEL program because ours is the best in Indonesia. As a community service, SCS-CEL is held throughout Indonesia, including in the frontier, outermost, underdeveloped areas.”

Bambang Yapri said Bina Karya Prima is currently transitioning from the first generation to the second generation, so talking about modernization at the company also means talking about the company’s sustainability.

“There are challenges, of course. The family company wants to contribute more,” he said.

If previously the company was labor-intensive, it is now transitioning more to the technology of today. As a challenge from the journey passed from the last three companies, Bina Karya Prima currently focuses more on manufacturing.

“This is certainly a challenge for alumni or new students to want to work in manufacturing, including plantations,” Yapri said.

He admitted that it is difficult to get professionals in manufacturing. This field, he believes, is not as sexy as the technology field.

Some countries become industrial technology barometers because they do not have natural resources. Therefore, Yapri said, they chose technology and service industries. This is different from Indonesia, which has abundant natural resources.

“Therefore, building resilient and independent characters is important, and it is not easy. I think such qualities exist in students at UGM,” he explained.

YOGYAKARTA – Decentralization of education as mandated in Law No. 32/2004 is a management system to implement the development of education that emphasizes on diversity. According to Law No. 32 /2004 Article 7 paragraph one (1), the regional authority includes the authority in all areas of government, except in the field of foreign policy, defense and security, justice, fiscal/monetary, and religion, as well as other authorities specifically regulated.

Other than that, all became the authority of the region, including education. The purpose of granting of authority in the implementation of regional autonomy is to improve people’s welfare, equity and justice, democratization and respect for local culture, as well as to observe the potential and diversity of the regions.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Education of the Province of Yogyakarta Special Region, Prof. Wuryadi, one thing must not be forgotten in the implementation of the autonomy of education which is not to create the attitude of self-importance. For example, one school does not want to coordinate with each other and only promotes its personal interests. "They do not care with the course of education at other institutions. This is dangerous if we do not respond to it wisely," said Wuryadi when speaking in the discussion Promoting Education for All at the Koesnadi Hardjasoemantri Cultural Center on Wednesday (8/12). This discussion is one of the series of 100% Festival of Indonesia event which was held by UGM BEM KM.

Wuryadi on the occasion also asked about the government’s policy regarding the implementation of the National Examination (UN). The government established that only students who pass the national examination can enter college. According to Wuryadi, the correlation between exam and academic achievement when studying in college is very small. "Research has been conducted at IPB and ITB. In fact, there is a big correlation between student achievements and report cards during the study," he added.

Wuryadi reminded once again that the policy was banned by the Supreme Court because it is considered as failing to meet the standard values. Nevertheless, the government up to this date decided that they will continue to implement the national examination. "The curriculum is based on competence. However, the national exam is not suitable with competency," Wuryadi added.

Meanwhile, education observer, Eko Prasetyo, on the occasion said that education is not only seen from the results, but also the processes. The knowledge gained from an education at least should have an impact in terms of historical, social implications, and social reconstruction. "If these do not happen, then surely education does not make us emotionally mature," said Eko.

Ironically, according to Eko, education gradually becomes only a ritual, for example, the orientation for new students event (OPSPEK), community service or graduation. If the government, parliament and the community do not immediately sit down together to find solutions to the implementation of populist oriented education, it is feared that pragmatism and commercialization of education will persist.

Until this time, king banana (Musa sapientum) may only be known as the fruit for culinary dish. Apparently, besides its delicious taste, king banana is also efficacious for wound healing after tooth extraction. Not only that, the results of that research have made UGM students to win gold medals at the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) XXIII at Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, Bali, 21-23 July.
UGM students who won the gold medal at the Research Student Creativity Program are Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, Nur Ferliana Sari, Hajar Novelty Wity, Rahma Ningsih and Sekar Putri. All of the students are majoring in Dentist Education UGM class of 2006 and 2007.
According to team leader Yosaphat Bayu Rosanto, banana plant’s gum is considered wastes that pollute the environment and stain the clothing, but in rural communities banana gum are often used to heal wounds. This is the background of scientific research done by these students.
"Particularly, until this time we know that banana juice contains saponins, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid," said Yosaphat at UGM, Thursday (12/8).
Yosaphat added, banana plant’s gum has been known to contain saponins (for the formation of new blood vessels), flavonoids (shortening the phase of inflammation as well as prevention of infection) and ascorbic acid (forming collagen connective tissue). The students research to study the effect of banana gum gel to the number of angiogenesis, collagen density, and number of osteoblasts in the process of wound healing after tooth extraction has been tested on marmots.
"The research so far has only been tested on 24 marmots," he said. Yosaphat said that the twenty-four marmots were divided into three groups namely the positive control group using the wound healing drug, negative control with a gel of CMC Na (Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium), and with treatment, that is a combination of the king banana’s gum and CMC Na. The marmots that received treatment with the gum and CMC Na have quicker healing process.
"Marmots that were given the treatment can heal in five days Whereas the other way it could take 10 days even 14 days,’ he explained. The results of the research showed an increasing number of angiogenesis, collagen density, and a significant number of osteoblasts in applications of banana gum on the wound after tooth extraction. However, the number of osteoblasts did not differ significantly among the three treatments.
"By that result, it could be concluded that king banana gum can accelerate wound healing after tooth extraction," he said.
Meanwhile, related to the process of obtaining the gum of king banana crops, Rahma Ningsih said that the king banana is sliced as usual. Then the water and the gum are squeezed. Banana gum and water are dried in oven for three days with a temperature of 55 Celsius degrees. Results of the drying were then mixed with CMC Na.

"The composition are; banana juice 80%, while Na CMC is approximately 20%," said Rahma. Rahma explained that the results of the research did not rule the possibility that it will be  immediately applied in humans after going through several tests such as content test, toxicity test, clinical test to the patent.
The cost of the research was fairly low about IDR 135 thousand to buy banana stem and the drying process with ovens.
"The cost of research is quite affordable, around IDR 135 thousand, primarily to buy banana plants and the drying process with an oven," explained Rahma.
As reported previously, UGM succeeded to be the overall champion in the National Student Scientific week XXIII, which was held at the University Mahasaraswati, Denpasar, 21-23 July 2010. In the activity that was participated by 113 colleges, UGM won 19 medals, nine gold medals, four silver medals and six bronze medals.
