The Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) community is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its finest members, Professor Soesanto Mangkoewidjojo, who passed away at the age of 91.

The late professor at UGM’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH UGM) passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at 05:00 WIB.

Before being laid to rest at the UGM Family Cemetery in Sawitsari, Professor Mangkoewidjojo’s body was placed in Balairung UGM on Wednesday (Jan. 15).

Professor M. Baiquni, chair of UGM’s Board of Professors, led the farewell ceremony, which was attended by the UGM academic community.

“On behalf of the UGM community, I extend my deepest condolences for the passing of Professor Soesanto Mangkoewidjojo. May Allah grant him the best place and all his good deeds in this world be accepted,” Professor Baiquni said in his opening remarks.

The board chair noted that Professor Mangkoewidjojo was stationed in the Department of Clinical Pathology at FKH UGM.

He was appointed a professor after delivering his inaugural speech, titled “Environmental Pollution: A Challenge for Pathologists,” at UGM’s Open Senate Meeting on Jan. 19, 1985, or 40 years ago.

In that speech, Professor Baiquni continued, Professor Mangkoewidjojo discussed the impact of environmental pollution on various living organisms and the role of pathologists in addressing these issues. His speech highlighted the many materials and substances that pollute the environment.

“He also identified various pollutants and their toxicopathological aspects,” he explained.

Professor Baiquni expressed his hope that the works of the late Professor Mangkoewidjojo would pave the way for the future development of both knowledge and acts of worship.

He also hoped that younger generations would follow his example, expand upon his knowledge, and continue his work in the future.

“We also pray that the family he leaves behind will be granted patience, strength, and acceptance. For indeed, Allah has the ultimate right over all His creations, and may the prayers we offer today be accepted by Him,” he said.

“I also extend my gratitude to all those present—fellow members of the UGM community—for taking the time to attend this final tribute to Professor Mangkoewidjojo before he is laid to rest at the UGM Family Cemetery in Sawitsari.”

The Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at FKH UGM, Dr. Agung Budiyanto, read a biography that noted Professor Mangkoewidjojo was born in Klaten on Apr. 5, 1933.

He completed his diploma and undergraduate degrees in Veterinary Medicine at Universitas Gadjah Mada and continued his professional veterinary education.

He earned his Master’s in Veterinary Science from the University of Minnesota and his Doctorate in Veterinary Science from Michigan State University, USA.

Throughout his career, Professor Mangkoewidjojo held various positions, including Head of the Veterinary Medicine Department, Head of the Veterinary Medicinal Chemistry Division, Head of the Veterinary Public Health Division, Vice Dean I, Vice Dean II, and served as Dean of FKH UGM for two terms.

Clouds hung heavy over the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) campus, reflecting the sorrowful atmosphere during Professor Kaelan’s memorial service at the Balairung courtyard.

The professor, a prominent observer of Pancasila philosophy and constitutional law, passed away on Wednesday (Dec. 25) at 08:50 WIB at RSUP Sardjito at the age of 78.

“We have lost one of UGM’s finest sons, who was actively involved in studying Pancasila philosophy,” said Professor M. Mukhtasar Syamsuddin, one of Professor Kaelan’s colleagues during his service at the UGM Faculty of Philosophy.

He said Professor Kaelan was a kind figure who dedicated his life to UGM.

Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo, Secretary of the UGM Board of Professors, represented the UGM leadership and community to express condolences on the passing of Professor Kaelan at the age of 78.

“On behalf of the UGM family, we extend our deepest condolences to our teacher and role model. May the knowledge he shared become a source of eternal merit for him,” said Professor Kumorotomo.

Professor Kaelan was born in Magetan on Jan. 27, 1946. He taught at the UGM Faculty of Philosophy and the UGM Graduate School. On Jul. 10, 2007, he was inaugurated as a professor, delivering a speech titled “Epistemological Fallacies in the Reform Era and the Revitalization of the Nation-State.”

In his speech, Professor Kaelan stated that the global era affecting all nations had led Indonesia toward the collapse of the nation-state and the erosion of nationalism, unity, and Indonesian identity, which are part of the nation’s local wisdom.

“For Indonesia to realize a democratic, religious, and civilized society in the current global reform process, the nation-state must be revitalized, with its foundation grounded in the country’s philosophy,” said Professor Kaelan at the time.

After the memorial service at Balairung, UGM’s Central Office, the late professor was buried at the UGM family cemetery in Sawitsari, Sleman.

Her remains were laid to rest at UGM Sawitsari Cemetery on Nov. 15, 2024, following a final tribute ceremony at UGM’s Balairung Hall.

Professor Hapsara was born in Yogyakarta on Dec. 1, 1947. She completed her medical education at Universitas Gadjah Mada and graduated as a doctor in 1973.

She pursued a specialty in Pediatrics at UGM and finished in 1982. She later earned her doctorate from Kobe University, Japan, in 2005.

Professor Hapsara’s career at UGM began in 1974 as a faculty member. Over time, she held several strategic positions, including Head of the Department of Pediatrics at FK-KMK UGM (2006–2009) and Director of Medical Services, Medical Support, and Nursing at UGM Academic Hospital (2011).

Additionally, she served as a member of the Interim Senate of UGM’s Vocational College in 2012.

As a doctor, Professor Hapsara firmly believed that her profession was to serve humanity, not to seek wealth.

This principle guided her to provide heartfelt patient care and mentor her students with a conscience. In her teachings, she emphasized the importance of integrity, empathy, and service to the community.

Professor Hapsara delivered her inaugural address on May 29, 2009, titled “Detection of Brain Development Disorders and the Development of Potential in Children with Special Needs.”

She also served as the Executive Director of Children House Lare Utami Yogyakarta, an institution providing education and healthcare services for children.

For her dedication, she was awarded the Satyalancana Karya Satya XXX by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in 2011.

Her social endeavors reflect her commitment to humanity, particularly to those requiring special attention. Even after retiring as a civil servant on Jan. 1, 2018, she remained active in social and organizational activities, demonstrating an unwavering spirit of service.

The entire academic community of UGM accompanies her final journey with their best prayers.

“Her dedication, struggles, and contributions during her time at Universitas Gadjah Mada will always be remembered,” concluded the UGM Board of Professors Secretary, Professor Wahyudi Kumorotomo.

Professor Hapsara’s legacy will live on through the educational innovations and service she rendered.

One of her lasting messages was the importance of “Never-Ending Innovation” in healthcare education, which aligns with Universitas Gadjah Mada’s vision of continuously fostering innovations for the nation’s advancement.

The man known for his wisdom and prudence has passed away. Professor Ichlasul Amal died on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2024, at the age of 82.

He is remembered as the former Rector of UGM and former Chair of the Press Council.

He was the rector who courageously supported the student movement during the 1998 reform era, even though, at that time, campus activists were often arrested and harassed by the military.

Quoted from the book ‘Rektor-Rektor Universitas Gadjah Mada: Biografi Pendidikan,’ his inauguration as rector on the eve of the 1998 reforms was attended by the Minister of Education and Culture Wiranto Arismunandar and students who demonstrated to hold a dialogue with the minister.

Professor Amal met with the students and expressed his support for their movement.

On another occasion, the figure who served as Chair of the Press Council was offered a ministerial position during B.J. Habibie’s presidency.

This offer caused concern among the students, who feared being abandoned, but Professor Amal’s dedication to UGM led him to remain as rector until the end of his term.

During his leadership, the UGM Campus Mosque was realized and became a center for Islamic activities around UGM.

“UGM has lost one of its finest sons, a figure who epitomized leadership and demonstrated exceptional leadership,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM), Dr. Wawan Mas’udi.

Dr. Mas’udi shared how the figure born in Jember was a prolific writer and educator whose works remain highly relevant today.

Professor Amal also supported the student reform movement in 1998 and gave a speech in front of thousands of students who participated in the protests.

“His presence protected us and made us feel safe,” the dean recalled.

The Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Finance, Professor Supriyadi, expressed that Professor Ichlasul Amal’s passing left a sorrow for UGM.

“Professor Ichlasul Amal was highly dedicated to the world of education,” he said.

Professor Supriyadi praised Professor Amal’s commitment to advancing UGM by strengthening networks and the institution.

One of his efforts as the 11th Rector of UGM was securing financial aid for thousands of UGM students who couldn’t pay tuition fees due to the economic crisis.

He also sought to assist UGM employees affected by the crisis.

Even during the reform protests, Professor Amal helped detained students return home and assisted with medical expenses for injured students.

“In fact, when the Maluku conflict broke out in 1999, Professor Amal opened the opportunity for students from Pattimura University to transfer to UGM,” Professor Supriyadi explained.

Professor Amal’s dedication to UGM and Indonesia is unquestionable. His passing left former UGM Rector Professor Panut Mulyono with a sense of loss.

“He was both a teacher and a best friend. When I served as rector, he often came to my office to discuss many things,” Professor Mulyono said.

According to him, the relationship between their families was very close, and Professor Amal would often send plant seedlings.

Suwarni Darsohardjono, who once headed the UGM Public Relations Subdivision under Professor Amal’s leadership, also remembered this kindness.

“I remember him in two ways. First, he was fearless. In a time when the government was very powerful, he dared to take action. Second, he was very kind and attentive to the staff who worked with him,” Darsohardjono recalled.

Professor Amal was a proud son of UGM. He began his undergraduate studies in International Relations (IR) at UGM from 1961 to 1967.

He then continued his education at Northern Illinois University DeKalb in the United States, earning a Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science.

He earned his PhD in Political Science from Monash University, Australia, in 1984.

Two years after receiving his doctorate, he became Director of the UGM Inter-University Center (PAU) until 1988. Professor Amal also lectured in International Relations at UGM and later served as Dean of Fisipol UGM from 1988 to 1994.

In 1994, he was appointed Director of the UGM Graduate School, and in 1998, at the peak of his career, he was elected Rector of UGM during the reform era.
