Goats and other small ruminants are considered ideal livestock for coping with various environmental stresses.

Goats are also resilient to high temperatures and drought. With these advantages, goats are predicted to become a sustainable source of food security, economically viable, and adaptive to climate change in the future.

According to the 2018 FAO report, when the population of other livestock decreases, the goat population is expected to surpass that of sheep.

As of 2023, goats are the most productive livestock in Indonesia, with a population of 19.398 million, compared to cattle, which number 18.6 million.

Professor Kustantinah of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science believes that Indonesia’s abundant natural resources will increase the goat population by 3.2% annually and further.

“The development of livestock throughout Indonesia can be done in suitable environments by empowering existing universities,” she said Friday (Feb. 7).

The Head of the Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed at Animal Science UGM mentioned that Indonesia currently has around 59 faculties of animal science.

With collaboration, livestock development is expected to be easier to implement.

To boost meat production, meat-type goats, such as Bligon, Kacang, and Marica goats, should be developed.

“The demand for meat-type goats is quite high, especially during Eid al-Adha (sacrificial feast), and even for export purposes, the potential remains wide open,” she explained.

She also advocated for a Livestock Development Plan involving higher education institutions every five years, or REPELITA, to increase the goat population in Indonesia.

At Animal Science UGM, Professor Kustantinah mentioned several goat development activities have been conducted by staff from the Laboratory of Animal Feed Science in collaboration with other laboratories within the Department of Nutrition and Animal Feed.

One such initiative is a community service program in a foster village in Nyemani Hamlet, Sidoharjo Village, Samigaluh District, Kulon Progo Regency.

“The development of goat farming there is mostly managed by women’s farmer groups (KWT), as seen in Gunungkidul, Kulon Progo, and Sleman,” she concluded.

Many people consume eggs as a popular source of animal protein. The high demand for animal protein correlates with increased egg consumption.

Therefore, clean and disease-free eggs are essential to prevent the spread of diseases that can affect public health, such as typhoid.

“This disease occurs in eggs contaminated with Salmonella bacteria,” said Salma Nur Azizah, a 2022 UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) student, Thursday (Feb. 6).

In response to this issue, Azizah, along with fellow student Mohammad Rizky Zulfahmi, proposed using ultraviolet C (UV-C) light to combat Salmonella bacteria in the layer chicken farming industry.

Azizah explained that UV-C light has the shortest wavelength among other ultraviolet rays. Based on various references they studied, UV-C light is strong enough to damage bacterial DNA, including Salmonella.

“Using UV-C light to combat Salmonella contamination is an effective and simple method. UV-C light stops the growth of pathogenic bacteria by breaking their DNA chains,” she explained.

Zulfahmi added that the UV-C system designed to combat Salmonella bacteria consists of several parts: a control panel, sterilization plastic, egg tray, machine wheels, frame, gear wheels, conveyor belt, and UV-C light.

Specifically, UV-C light can kill Salmonella bacteria in 10-15 minutes, depending on the wavelength and exposure time.

“Installing UV-C light on the conveyor after grading can optimize time efficiency in industrial-scale operations. Therefore, it is important to introduce this UV-C sterilization method to the layer chicken farming industry to enhance food safety and quality,” Zulfahmi elaborated.

The creative idea from these two Animal Science students, under the supervision of Galuh Adi Insani, won 2nd place in the Poultry Literacy Competition held by Universitas Padjadjaran’s Poultry Professional Group from Aug. 27 to Sept. 26, 2024.

Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Professor Mahfud MD criticized legal enforcement as arbitrary and for failing to uphold equality before the law and government.

He stressed the need for justice and fairness in governance.

“The most relevant thing right now is that we need to build public welfare through democratic politics and governance, which does not act arbitrarily and upholds law and justice based on the principle of equality before the law and government,” said Professor Mahfud during the Diversity Dialogue held in commemoration of the 79th Anniversary of UGM’s Faculty of Law (FH UGM), Wednesday (Feb. 5), at the Auditorium B of FH UGM.

Professor Mahfud highlighted the current generation’s difficulties in finding jobs or business opportunities due to the persistent practices of corruption, collusion, and nepotism.

“If you want to apply for a government job but don’t have connections, you get sidelined. If you want to apply to the police, they ask for money. You’re reported for slander when you don’t pass and ask for your money back. You could even go to prison,” Professor Mahfud said.

Additionally, he pointed out how young people struggle to obtain business permits due to complicated bureaucracy.

“Young entrepreneurs or startups go to Singapore or Dubai for permits instead of to the government. They get it in one day. Of course, the taxes go there. In our own country, we face discrimination and unfair treatment, weakening unity,” he explained.

According to Professor Mahfud, the strength of corruption, collusion, and nepotism can weaken the spirit of unity and patriotism among the younger generation, especially since they are not participants in the independence struggle.

The sense of nationalism and love for the homeland is vastly different from that of the freedom fighters.

“We didn’t participate in the war. The historical actors are almost gone. The current generation communicates with Western ideas. Therefore, this new generation has new needs that a pro-people government must meet,” he said.

Professor Mahfud emphasized that unity among all elements of society is a key factor in Indonesia’s success in building a sovereign nation.

All layers of Indonesian society are responsible for maintaining diversity. This approach will create social justice. Therefore, differences based on primordial ties such as race, ethnicity, and region should no longer be divisive for Indonesia.

After all, the success of the Golden Indonesia program in 2045 also greatly depends on the country’s stability.

Meanwhile, Father Alexius A. Binawan stated that the state plays a vital role in maintaining tolerance among fellow citizens from various races, ethnicities, cultures, and religions through respect, treatment, and recognition.

Dr. Dahliana Hasan, Dean of FH UGM, noted that the Diversity Dialogue was part of the faculty’s 79th anniversary celebration.

“This anniversary opens with a diversity dialogue. The faculty itself reflects diversity, as its lecturers and staff come from different regions with different religions. At the very least, we aim to foster diversity through tolerance and humanity, which can contribute better to society, the nation, and the country,” she concluded.

Amanda Divanty, a Management student at the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM) class of 2022, has become one of the students who successfully balanced her studies while managing six businesses.

Her entrepreneurial journey began with Porto Photo (@portophoto.id), a self-photo studio and photobooth service offering affordable, high-quality photos, which she co-founded with two fellow students from the same program.

“Porto Studio has an offline studio in Pogung, and it seems to have opened doors for me to venture into the food and beverage business,” the student said during a conversation at FEB UGM on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025.

Driven by her ambition, Amanda, as she is commonly called, soon expanded into the culinary business by launching Cherries Bites (@cheeries.bites), which sells brownies, chiffon cakes, and creamy sago online.

She later opened Paspa (@paspa.yk), a pasta and Zuppa shop in Condongcatur. In the same area, she launched Mentaikudimsum (@mentaikudimsum), a restaurant specializing in mental dim sum.

Amanda was thrilled to receive a grant to manage EB Café, specifically Milkymoo, a business selling milk products, ice cream, and egg waffles.

“This will soon operate at the EB Canteen, alongside Pisang Saji, which we launched in front of UNY’s Sports Hall at the end of January 2025,” she explained.

Reflecting on her success in managing six businesses at a young age, Amanda shared that her motivation for entrepreneurship stemmed from her childhood experiences watching her parents run a food and beverage business.

Since elementary school, Amanda had been trying her hand at selling various items, from stationery to slime and frozen food.

“What started as experimenting gradually became a habit. I found it enjoyable and productive to spend my free time doing something that generates income,” Amanda said.

Amanda attributes her success to teamwork and choosing the right business partners.

“Having the right team allows you to learn many things. If I hadn’t met my current partners, I might not have come this far,” she added.

She also expressed gratitude for her talent and ability to juggle both studies and business at a young age.

Known for her determination and perseverance, Amanda always strives to do her best and keep learning.

Like other successful students, Amanda revealed that managing her time between lectures and business was key.

She uses a detailed to-do list and prioritizes tasks accordingly.

“I try to create a detailed to-do list and tackle everything based on priority,” she explained.

Amanda is thankful for the immense support she has received from her family, close friends, and the FEB UGM academic environment.

Her friends at FEB UGM describe her as highly supportive and hardworking.

Amanda credits several courses for contributing to her business success, especially those related to marketing and operations.

“At first, I thought entrepreneurship was just about making products and selling them, but after studying at FEB UGM, I realized there are many other aspects, like human resource management, finance, and marketing, that are essential for building brand awareness,” she shared.

Looking ahead, Amanda plans to continue growing her businesses.

Despite challenges and uncertainties, she feels content with her current path.

“Through entrepreneurship, I feel I can contribute and provide job opportunities for others,” she said.

For students aspiring to follow in her footsteps, Amanda advises not to hesitate and to keep trying.

She recommends starting by gathering as much information as possible about the business they want to pursue.

“Remember, perfection doesn’t have to be achieved on the first step. Keep learning and improving over time. Don’t worry about what others say. If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together,” Amanda concluded.

Professor Masyhuri from UGM’s Faculty of Agriculture (Agriculture UGM) has officially retired at the age of 70 after dedicating approximately 45 years to teaching agricultural socio-economics.

Throughout his career, Professor Masyhuri actively conducted strategic research, particularly on food security.

The president honored him with the Adhikarya Pangan Nusantara Award for his contributions to national food security research.

However, despite his accomplishments, there is still one unresolved concern.

“I am still saddened because I have not yet found a concept that truly ensures farmers’ welfare,” he said during his retirement gathering, held warmly and modestly on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at the Harjono Danoesastro Auditorium, Agriculture UGM.

He emphasized that farmers’ welfare must be the top priority in agricultural policies, including ensuring adequate land ownership.

He also highlighted the importance of technological innovation in agriculture, such as utilizing seawater for cultivation without reducing land productivity.

“Indonesia must develop seawater irrigation technology so that dry and barren land can still be cultivated, rather than relying solely on freshwater,” he added.

Professor Masyhuri is known as a smart and dedicated academic who has worked for over 45 years in agricultural economics.

Reflecting on his life journey, he recounted the challenges he faced, from being bullied in elementary school to sacrificing his choice of high school for his younger sibling.

Each challenge, he said, only strengthened him.

He also shared the unique story behind his decision to join Agriculture UGM.

“I was actually accepted into UGM’s Geodesy and Civil Engineering programs, but my father couldn’t afford to buy a drafting table. So, I steered toward agriculture, which was my third choice. It turned out to be the path meant for me,” he recalled.

The retirement gathering, attended by colleagues, students, and alumni from various universities, including Universitas Pembangunan Nasional (UPN), Institut Pertanian (INSTIPER),  and other universities, was a memorable tribute to his long academic journey.

Dean of Agriculture UGM, Dr. Jaka Widada, deeply appreciated Professor Masyhuri’s dedication to education. He noted that Professor Masyhuri was a teacher and a mentor to many generations of agricultural economics experts in Indonesia.

“He has produced many graduates who are now making significant contributions nationwide. His character is a role model for all of us, consistent in dedication and service,” he said.

For students and colleagues, Professor Masyhuri was known for his vast knowledge and his passion for sharing it.

His teaching style was distinctive. He brought thick textbooks to class, delivered material enthusiastically, and always posed thought-provoking questions.

“Initially, he seemed strict and quiet, but during mentoring sessions, he turned out to be very friendly and humorous. He was critical in discussions, highly committed to developing the institution, and always embedded valuable lessons in every case study,” recalled a former student.

A colleague and representative of the Department of Agricultural Socio-Economics, Professor Dwidjono Hadi Susanto, added that Professor Masyhuri was a remarkably diligent academic.

His journey from undergraduate to doctorate was a testament to his hard work and determination.

“He pursued his education at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños directly to a Ph.D. program, skipping the master’s level, which is very rare. He also received a World Bank scholarship and has won eight prestigious academic awards, including from the United States,” he said.

Despite his impressive achievements, Professor Masyhuri’s focus on academics led him to delay personal matters.

“He was so focused that he forgot to marry. It wasn’t until he nearly completed his Ph.D. that he was asked to return home to be matched with a partner,” Professor Susanto jokes, prompting laughter from the audience.

At the end of the event, attendees offered prayers and best wishes for the professor to enjoy his retirement with happiness, health, and peace.

“His legacy of kindness and contribution will always live on in our hearts,” said one alumnus.

That day, Professor Masyhuri officially retired, but his legacy in Indonesian academics and agriculture will continue to thrive. His dedication, knowledge, and spirit will inspire future generations.

Palm kernel cake is a byproduct of palm kernel oil production and is abundant in Indonesia.

It contains approximately 14-19% crude protein, making it a potential livestock feed, as explained by Professor Zuprizal, a researcher from the Animal Feed Science Laboratory (IMT) at the Faculty of Animal Science, Universitas Gadjah Mada (Animal Science UGM), during the Fapet Menyapa event on Friday, Jan. 24, discussing the potential of feed additives for livestock feed.

Professor Zuprizal mentioned that Indonesia’s annual feed production is about 20 million tons, and the optimal proportion of palm kernel cake used in broiler chicken feed formulation is 10%, supplemented with essential amino acids and enzymes.

“There is potential to use around 2 million tons of palm kernel cake for broiler chicken feed,” said Professor Zuprizal.

He further explained that using 10% palm kernel cake in broiler feed could reduce the use of corn by approximately 9% and soybean meal by around 3%.

“This would result in savings, especially since soybean meal is still imported,” he added.

However, due to the high fiber content, particularly mannans in palm kernel cake, supplementation with external enzymes like mannanase, NSPase, and protease is needed to improve nutrient digestibility, which in turn enhances productivity, carcass quality, and the digestive health of broiler chickens.

The IMT team also presented several research examples of feed additives using nanoparticle technology for broiler chickens, such as nanotechnology turmeric extract, nanotechnology cardamom extract, nanoemulsion lemongrass essential oil extract, and soursop leaf extract.

Alongside Professor Zuprizal, the IMT team present at Fapet Menyapa included Professor Kustantinah, Dr. Aji Praba Baskara, Dr. Nanung Danar Dono, Dr. Insani Hubi Zulfa, and Dr. Aeni Nur Latifah.

Undergraduate and graduate programs at the Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada, have received full accreditation from ASIIN (Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik).

This accreditation highlights the programs’ alignment with international standards.

The six accredited programs include Undergraduate Programs in Environmental Geography, Cartography and Remote Sensing, and Regional Development.

These programs received a seven-year accreditation period from Oct. 1, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2031.

Three graduate programs, including the Master’s Programs in Geography and Remote Sensing and the Doctoral Program in Geography, also received ASIIN international accreditation.

These graduate programs were awarded a six-year accreditation period, effective from Dec. 5, 2024, to Sept. 30, 2030.

This ASIIN accreditation further strengthens the Faculty of Geography’s role nationally and internationally in education, research, and community service.

The importance of international accreditation for academic programs aligns with the spirit of global and regional education, which has developed an education system based on learning outcomes.

The Dean of the UGM Faculty of Geography, Danang Sri Hadmoko, stated that obtaining this international accreditation reflects a public responsibility to realize professional, efficient, high-quality, transparent, and accountable academic and supporting components management at the faculty.

He noted that this accreditation demonstrates that the academic programs at the Faculty of Geography are of excellent quality and comparable to similar programs worldwide.

Additionally, this accreditation signifies that internationalization has become a culture and has been internalized by all components within the Faculty of Geography.

“This accreditation achievement also reflects a strong synergy among the components, including faculty members, non-teaching staff, students at all levels, strategic partners, and alumni. We appreciate and extend our gratitude to everyone who has worked very well together to achieve this international accreditation,” said the dean on Saturday (Jan. 25).

The Vice Dean for Education, Teaching, and Student Affairs, Professor Muhammad Kamal, stated that the Faculty of Geography views this accreditation achievement as a form of commitment to continuously enhancing its international reputation and the quality of its programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

“The success of obtaining ASIIN accreditation proves that the outputs of our graduates, curriculum, teaching methods, processes, and resources at FGE align with international standards,” he said.

Despite having received international accreditation for all its programs, Professor Kamal emphasized that the Faculty of Geography remains committed to continuous improvement and delivering its best efforts, particularly in the academic field.

He highlighted that this accreditation is crucial for students, supporting their participation in various international exposure activities.

The Head of the Faculty of Geography’s Quality Assurance Unit, Dr. M. Widyastuti, stated that the long accreditation period encourages academic programs to continually improve in a sustainable manner (continuous improvement) in academic quality assurance.

She added that this international accreditation achievement further enhances the academic reputation of the Faculty of Geography and Universitas Gadjah Mada.

One of the doctoral candidates in the Doctoral Program in Geography, Listumbinang Halengkara, expressed appreciation for this achievement and pride as a student.

He noted that this accreditation is crucial for students, as ASIIN accreditation is a benchmark for the quality of academic programs at the global level.

“This means that when I graduate, the knowledge and degree I have obtained will be globally recognized and help enhance my recognition as an academic. I hope that the academic programs at this faculty will maintain high-quality standards in every learning process and keep innovating in educating the nation’s children,” he said.

The opening of the 77th Anniversary (Dies Natalis) celebration series of the UGM Faculty of Dentistry (FKG UGM) was filled with joy.

The event began with a joint exercise with the FKG UGM academic community and a healthy walk around the health cluster campus.

As one of the oldest and leading faculties in Indonesia, FKG UGM has made significant contributions to education, research, and community service in the field of dentistry.

This Dies Natalis celebration is an important moment for reflection, evaluation, and planning strategic steps to achieve the faculty’s vision and mission in the future.

“Various events will be held during the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM. The most important aspect of all activities is togetherness. We aim to enhance the sense of unity among the academic community and strengthen the relationship between FKG UGM and the public,” said the Dean of FKG UGM, Professor Suryono, at the FKG UGM parking lot on Friday (Jan. 24).

Dean Suryono hopes to increase public awareness of dentistry with this year’s celebration. He emphasized that collaboration, innovation, and integrity are always prioritized in every FKG UGM activity.

“These principles have been the foundation of FKG UGM’s success to this day. We hope that through this Dies Natalis celebration, we can all collectively embrace a brighter future, with a commitment to continue developing dental science and services for the progress of the nation and the country,” he added.

The opening ceremony was marked by the cutting of a tumpeng by the Dean of FKG, accompanied by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FKKMK UGM), the Dean of Pharmacy, faculty leaders, lecturers, students, and staff within the health cluster.

The event was enlivened by the opening of Pasar Kangen, tug-of-war competitions, Angguk dance performances, music by lecturers and students, and the distribution of door prizes.

Dr. Isti Rahayu Suryani, as the organizing committee chairperson, stated that the theme for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM is “Digital Dentistry: Enhancing Efficiency in Indonesia’s Health Transformation.”

She believes that increasing her understanding of Digital Dentistry will provide deeper insights into the development of digital technology in dentistry.

“Of course, this poses a challenge—how to implement such technology to improve the efficiency and quality of dental health services in Indonesia,” she explained.

Dr. Suryani expressed her hopes that the series of events for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM would strengthen the relationship between FKG UGM and the community. The academic community of FKG UGM is expected to build closer ties with the wider community, particularly in the field of dentistry.

“We aim to increase the faculty’s tangible contribution to advancing the health sector in Indonesia. Through this Dies Natalis, we hope that FKG UGM can make a significant contribution to the progress of dentistry in Indonesia, which is in line with the current digital transformation,” she added.

Following the opening, a number of events are set to enliven the 77th Dies Natalis celebration of FKG UGM.

These include community service activities in the form of outreach conducted by all elements of the academic community of FKG UGM on Feb. 8, 2025, in Pagilaran, Central Java.

There will also be a Fun Run and Family Gathering on Feb. 22, 2025. The Fun Run, themed “Together in Healthy Steps,” is expected to be a sports event that fosters camaraderie and strengthens family ties.

Meanwhile, the FKG UGM Family Gathering will be a reunion event that strengthens the bonds between alumni, the extended family, and the academic community of FKG UGM.

The Dies Natalis event will be highlighted by a Symposium, Hands-on Workshop, and Dental Exhibition on Feb. 27 and 28, 2025, at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Center (GIK UGM).

Around 500 participants are expected to attend, including students, dental hygienists, dentists, dental specialists, researchers, and practitioners in the field of dentistry.

Other activities include a spiritual gathering (tirakatan) and a communal iftar on Mar. 4, 2025, in the OECF Building Atrium.

The climax of the event will be the Open Senate Meeting for the 77th Dies Natalis of FKG UGM and a Wayang Orang performance on Mar. 5, 2025, at the Margono Soeradji Auditorium of FKG UGM.
