UGM graduated 841 master’s, medical specialty, medical subspecialty, and doctoral students during the Postgraduate Ceremony for the 2024/2025 Academic Year on Thursday (Jan. 23) at Grha Sabha Pramana.

The graduates included 691 master’s graduates, 6 of whom were international students, 73 specialty graduates, 18 subspecialty graduates, 59 doctoral graduates, and 15 graduates from the previous period.

The average study duration for the master’s program was 2 years and 2 months, and 7 graduates achieved a GPA of 4.00.

For the specialty program, the average study duration was 4 years and 1 month, with 59.9% of the graduates achieving the distinction of Cum Laude.

The youngest graduate in the subspecialty program was from the Surgery program, who completed their studies at the age of 33 years and 4 months.

The average study duration for the doctoral program was 4 years and 8 months, and six graduates achieved a GPA of 4.00.

At this graduation, Nezar Patria, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs and Secretary General of Kagama, delivered a message to the graduates urging them to be proactive in facing changes and challenges in the global job market.

This alumnus of UGM’s Faculty of Philosophy cited the Future of Jobs Report from the World Economic Forum, which states that technological changes, particularly the expansion of digital access, will be the most transformative trend by 2025.

Moreover, 60 percent of global companies see this as the main driver of their business transformation by 2030.

“Jobs that exist today are predicted to experience a decline in demand, and 39% of the skills you possess today will become obsolete or will at least need improvement,” he said.

Patria added that AI (Artificial Intelligence) and robotics advancements will affect almost all sectors, from government to industry and even the academic sector. AI specialists, big data analysts, and software developers are predicted to be the fastest-growing and most in-demand jobs.

However, the future job market will also require more human-centered skills, such as creativity, leadership, flexibility, and resilience.

“As UGM graduates, you have the strength to bridge traditional values and modern technology to lead innovation while maintaining harmony with nature and society. Let’s work together to build the nation and even contribute to the country’s advancement,” he said.

In her address, UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia stated that UGM has a mandate to develop knowledge that impacts society, including preparing excellent future talent.

This is being prepared, in part, to address three major challenges in 2025: increasing global geopolitical tensions and divisions, misinformation and disinformation threatening stability and progress, and environmental crises leading to extreme weather and ecosystem destruction.

“On the other hand, in the technology sector, we are faced with an era of intelligence, an era where artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and blockchain innovations are growing. These advancements can be said to bring changes as well as evolving challenges,” said Rector Emilia.

According to her, the task of education is not merely to produce graduates equipped with skills and knowledge but also to ensure they are of strong character, adaptive, and competitive so they can become agents of change in solving transnational and global issues.

“Recently, an alumnus from the Faculty of Geography and an alumnus from Geological Engineering completed an expedition to Antarctica and became part of the Russian Antarctica Expedition (RAE). This achievement is one example of alumni making a mark on the international stage through the application of knowledge,” she concluded.

Dian Riana Ningsih, a representative of the graduates from the Doctoral Program in Chemistry, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM), also delivered remarks during the graduation ceremony.

She believes that the graduation of UGM students is not meant to exacerbate existing social problems but rather to signify the responsibility placed on the graduates’ shoulders to contribute to society’s well-being.

“We are all proud to be part of UGM, a university that continuously excels and establishes itself as a leading higher education institution in Indonesia,” said Dr. Ningsih.

She added that the graduates’ collective memory will never forget that UGM is the custodian of Pancasila’s sacred values, a university that history has entrusted with nurturing the principles of Unity in Diversity.

The public regards UGM as a campus of struggle and the people’s campus. Dr. Ningsih hopes UGM will continue to belong to the people, not to officials, relatives, or even conglomerates, a campus preserved with empathy and dedication.

“I invite my fellow graduates to always uphold the good name of UGM and to apply the knowledge we have gained to make Indonesia a better and more dignified country on the international stage,” she concluded.

The Mechanical Engineering alumnus of UGM recounted his career journey, rising from an entry-level employee to becoming the marketing director of a major automobile trading company.

Suwandy emphasized that graduates should choose workplaces with values that promote growth in a positive environment. As a 1995 graduate of Mechanical Engineering, he credited his career success to the company’s values.

“Two principles I always hold onto are the willingness to improve and respect for people. These philosophies have helped me identify opportunities and continuously grow,” he said.

He explained that career success depends not solely on technical skills but also on the values and mindset applied at work.

He stressed the importance of maintaining good relationships with customers and the surrounding environment, as trust is the cornerstone of the professional world.

For Suwandy, providing excellent service is about offering products and creating sustainable value. He encouraged graduates from all UGM programs to believe in their abilities and aim high.

“We need to be confident and continuously strive for self-improvement because competition will always be there,” he advised.

Dr. Wirastuti Widyatmanti, Head of UGM’s Strategic Management Bureau, echoed these sentiments. She urged graduates to be confident and strive to make a tangible contribution in various sectors.

She also highlighted the importance of the Kagama alumni network as a vital asset for maximizing career opportunities.

“We encourage prospective alumni to remain confident, keep learning, and prove that UGM graduates can achieve brilliant careers,” she said.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKH UGM) inaugurated 191 new veterinarians at the Grha Sabha Pramana on Thursday, Jan. 16.

This inauguration marks an important moment in the graduation of new veterinarians ready to contribute to the health of animals and society at large. The newly inaugurated veterinarians consist of 148 women and 43 men.

This brings the total number of veterinarians graduated by FKH UGM to 6,406. The average study duration for the new veterinarians was 5 years, 8 months, and 11 days, with the fastest graduate completing the program in 5 years and 5 months.

The youngest veterinarian in this batch is 21 years, 11 months, and 14 days old. The best graduate was Annisa Amalia Zahra, with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.00.

Dean of FKH UGM, Professor Teguh Budipitojo, stated that 55.2% of the new veterinarians had already secured jobs even before their official graduation.

Most are employed in animal hospitals or veterinary clinics, while the rest work in companies, become entrepreneurs, or intend to continue their studies.

The dean emphasized that this inauguration symbolizes the beginning of a new responsibility for veterinarians. They play a strategic role in maintaining animal health, which in turn impacts human and environmental health.

“We know that after 30 years of Indonesia being free from foot-and-mouth disease (PMK), it suddenly surged again at the end of 2024 and continues to this day. It is our duty as veterinarians to assist every government effort,” said Dean Budipitojo.

He explained that to address the spread of PMK, FKH UGM, the Indonesian Association of Veterinary Faculties (AFKHI), and the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PBPDHI) organized a joint seminar to establish recommendations for tackling the growing number of PMK cases.

“This activity is our shared commitment, and it is our responsibility to contribute to all efforts to control animal diseases,” he added.

He also reminded that the veterinary profession carried by the graduates is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in achieving health targets, environmental protection, and poverty reduction.

“The professional oath you have taken is not just a formality, but a moral and professional commitment that will guide your every step forward,” he stated.

The dean hopes that the new veterinarians will uphold principles of integrity, dedication, and a continuous desire to learn. The medical field, including veterinary medicine, is constantly evolving, and self-competence must be consistently improved.

With new enthusiasm and the knowledge gained during their education, the graduates are ready to serve and contribute to the health of animals and society in Indonesia.

Dr. Muhammad Munawaroh, the Chair of PBPDHI, congratulated the new veterinarians from FKH UGM and advised them to maintain moral values and uphold professionalism in carrying out their duties and responsibilities.

“Understand and practice the veterinary code of ethics. This is important because it serves as guidance for veterinarians on what is permissible and what is not when conducting animal examinations. You must always consider the dignity of the veterinary profession,” he concluded.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) inaugurated 859 new engineers on Tuesday (Jan. 14).

The new engineers come from the Faculty of Engineering (727), Faculty of Forestry (70), and Faculty of Animal Science (62). With the addition of 727 new graduates, the Faculty of Engineering has successfully produced 4,281 engineers to date.

The Faculty of Forestry, with the addition of 70 new graduates, has produced 374 engineers, while the Faculty of Animal Science, with 62 new engineers, has produced 747 engineers. In total, UGM has successfully produced 5,402 engineers.

Professor Selo, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, stated that with the inauguration of engineers by UGM and the Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), the graduates can now truly be considered engineers when having just a Bachelor of Engineering degree felt incomplete.

“But with today’s inauguration, they are officially engineers because they are also inaugurated with PII,” he said at Grha Sabha Pramana.

Professor Selo did not say much on this occasion. He simply reminded everyone of the meaningful words in the Gadjah Mada hymne and the PII hymne.

“It says to serve, to uphold culture for the glory of the archipelago. Then there’s the PII hymne, and we are all Indonesian engineers needed by this country,” he explained.

Once again, he congratulated the newly inaugurated engineers. The UGM engineering graduates are the pride of UGM and the pride of Indonesia, bearing a great responsibility to bring this nation toward becoming a developed country.

“As engineers, we will certainly face many challenges ahead, not only technical challenges related to engineering but also non-technical challenges that can sometimes be even more difficult to overcome,” he added.

Several officials attended the inauguration of the new engineers, including Teguh Haryono, the Secretary General of PII; Santi Sirat, the Executive Director of PII; and the Deans and Vice Deans of the Faculties of Engineering, Forestry, and Animal Science.

In his speech, Teguh Haryono conveyed that Indonesia’s grand vision for 2045 is to make industry one of the main pillars determining the nation’s competitiveness.

He said technological advancement, strengthening manufacturing capacity, and developing superior human resources are key to achieving this vision.

“We, as engineers, have a strategic role in integrating technological innovation with societal needs,” he stated.

In Haryono’s view, engineers are agents of change who can bridge the gap between academic potential and practical applications in the industrial world.

The triple helix model, consisting of academia, industry, and government, must be continuously strengthened to create an ecosystem that supports industrial transformation.

“In this context, UGM has demonstrated its outstanding commitment to producing high-quality engineers ready to contribute to various sectors,” he explained.

“According to the data we received, UGM has produced approximately 5,402 engineers, and across Indonesia, there are currently around 28,000 engineers, with UGM contributing the most among the 45 universities that offer the Professional Engineering Education Program (PSBPI).”

Nyi Raden Calvinca Naomi Poerawinata feels relieved after four years of hard work completing her studies at two universities.

She graduated from the UGM Faculty of Law (FH UGM) and Maastricht University almost simultaneously.

On Nov. 21, 2024, she was declared a graduate of the international program of FH UGM during the Bachelor and Applied Bachelor Graduation Ceremony.

On Dec. 5, 2024, she will officially graduate from the European Law School at Maastricht University, Netherlands.

With this achievement, Poerawinata is entitled to two degrees: a Bachelor of Laws (S.H) from Universitas Gadjah Mada and a Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B) from Maastricht University.

At FH UGM, she focused on International Law. At Maastricht University, she enrolled in the European Law School, concentrating on various legal systems in the Netherlands, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and, in some cases, the United States.

“I am grateful for these two opportunities,” Poerawinata expressed in an interview on Wednesday (Dec. 4), just before she graduates from Maastricht University.

Studying at two universities was certainly no easy task. In pursuing the double degree program, Poerawinata completed her first year of education at UGM, which included semesters 1 and 2. She then continued her studies at Maastricht University, Netherlands, from semesters 3 to 6.

During semesters 7 and 8, she returned to FH UGM. In her fourth year, she eventually completed her thesis under joint supervision from UGM and Maastricht University.

“I am truly grateful to be able to express my best feelings. After going through tough years, I believe it has been very rewarding,” Poerawinata said.

Poerawinata is particularly thankful for completing her final project as she wished. In August, she passed and received final project grades for both of her legal research projects on disability rights, which shared the same title.

Reflecting on disability rights, Poerawinata recalled her previous experiences. She had once volunteered for children with special needs and had the opportunity to meet a female leader and disability rights advocate who authored disability law in the European Union.

“I was so happy to meet her, and she eventually became my supervisor, motivating and inspiring me in my research and writing my thesis,” she explained.

For her final project, Poerawinata wrote a thesis titled Inclusive Higher Education for Persons with Disabilities: Evaluation of the Implementation of Article 24(5) of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Accessing Education in Indonesia – A Case Study at Universitas Gadjah Mada.

This work sparked her curiosity about comparing the facilities and rights provided to persons with disabilities in Indonesia and Europe.

“I realize there is a difference in the standard of living between the people of Indonesia and Europe,” she noted.

One of the reasons Poerawinata chose to study at Maastricht University, Netherlands, was the complexity of the European Union. She admitted that she was very interested in learning the intricacies and workings of European law.

Everything she learned changed her perception of how European law is implemented to truly protect society.

“This makes a law enthusiast like me very happy,” she explained.

Poerawinata feels extremely fortunate to have participated in the Double Degree Program. Through this program, she also had the opportunity to participate in various international competitions, including representing a Dutch NGO at the United Nations.

Additionally, she was involved in the first regional round of an international moot court competition.

“This added incredible experience for me,” she said.

Graduating with a GPA of 3.75 from both universities was certainly not easy. While studying at Maastricht University, she admitted to using the Socratic method of teaching, in which students must answer various questions.

“We call it the PBL method (Problem-Based Learning),” she explained.

According to Poerawinata, this method is indeed challenging. However, it was this method that trained her to think critically and encouraged independence in learning.

She had to read 80-100 pages before each class and prepare answers for various case studies, which were then discussed collectively in class.

During her two years at Maastricht University, Poerawinata shared that her routine always began with waking up early, preparing lunch, and cycling to campus. After class, she spent much time studying at the faculty or reading at the library.

Occasionally, she went for walks in the back garden of the campus before heading to volunteer or work.

“I enjoyed going to Wisdom Park at UGM for walks, then walking with friends to class, having lunch, and continuing to work at a café while still volunteering on the weekends,” said Poerawinata, who aspires to build a career at the United Nations.

By combining academic excellence with effective time management, Sanidheo Chandra Ramadhana, a UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM) graduate, demonstrated how focused ambition can yield extraordinary results.

In just 3 years, 1 month, and 14 days, he became the fastest graduate at UGM with a GPA of 3.83 during the Undergraduate and Applied Bachelor Graduation Ceremony at Grha Sabha Pramana on Thursday (Nov. 21).

Remarkably, much of his thesis work was completed while participating in a student exchange program in Germany.

Sanidheo, or Dheo, was born and raised in Yogyakarta. He attended SMP Negeri 5 Yogyakarta and SMA Negeri 3 Yogyakarta. His interest in politics and governance began in high school, leading him to pursue a Public Policy and Management (MKP) degree at UGM.

Time management was Dheo’s key strategy throughout his studies. He completed his thesis early during his fifth semester while on the exchange program in Germany.

“While abroad, I focused on finishing my thesis, so I didn’t need to retake any classes in the sixth semester. My thesis was already done when I did my community service program (KKN). If you ask whether it was overwhelming, I’d say with proper time management, anything is possible,” Dheo explained on Monday (Nov. 25).

While prioritizing academics, Dheo also valued a balance between academic and extracurricular activities.

“Experience in organizations and social interactions is just as important. Many of my friends were active in organizations or spent time socializing, but I chose to focus. I spent two years in student organizations, so I knew when it was time to stop and pursue bigger goals,” he shared.

Dheo’s undergraduate thesis reflects his concern for strategic issues. His thesis, “The State’s Policy Remediation of Human Rights Due Diligence in Indonesia’s Palm Oil Industry Labor Supply Chain,” explores the importance of ratifying human rights policies within Indonesia’s palm oil supply chain.

His work caught the attention of UNDP researchers, who later invited him to join a related research project in Sorong, West Papua.

In addition to academic achievements, Dheo was active as a speaker in various forums, delivering training on organizational development, conflict advocacy, and student association leadership regeneration. He also interned at an international NGO specializing in writing.

“Since my early semesters, I started interning. These activities prepared me for a future career. For me, being a student isn’t just about attending classes and marking attendance; it’s about learning through hands-on experiences,” he said.

Dheo has been accepted into the University of London for a master’s program but is awaiting results for the LPDP scholarship. He also plans to continue contributing through research and international projects relevant to his field.

“I aim to further my studies while working in the public policy sector to create widespread impact. I plan to complete my UNDP contract until February 2025, then focus on my master’s program,” he revealed.

Dheo emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s ideals and avoiding negative influences. His journey proves that dedication, hard work, and good time management can lead to success.

With an exemplary academic track record and contributions to strategic issues, Dheo inspires others to achieve outstanding accomplishments at a young age.

“We must be selective in choosing our circle of friends. Don’t get carried away by unproductive trends. It’s also crucial to have clear goals and pursue them fearlessly,” he concluded.

Awane Theovilla Yogi was filled with happiness, wiping away her tears several times.

She felt overwhelmed after attending UGM’s Bachelor and Applied Bachelor Graduation Ceremony on Thursday (Nov. 21) at Grha Sabha Pramana.

She held tightly onto her Bachelor of Economics degree from the UGM Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB UGM).

For Yogi, earning a degree from UGM was no easy feat. Hailing from Awabutu in the Paniai District of Central Papua Province, she had always aspired to receive the best education despite coming from an underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) region.

After finishing elementary school, she continued her studies at SMP Santa Maria in Bandung. When she entered grade IX, she returned to Jayapura to complete her education at YPPK Kristus Raja Junior High School.

Fortunately, she received the ADEM (Affirmative Middle Education) scholarship, allowing her to continue her studies at SMA Negeri 1 Bojong in Pekalongan. After graduating from high school, she received the Affirmative Higher Education scholarship, which brought her to FEB UGM.

The daughter of Jonas Yogi and Theresia Gobai admitted that the early days of her university studies were challenging. She experienced stress and had difficulty adjusting to campus life.

“I doubted whether I could make it. Seeing my friends’ backgrounds shocked me, and I felt mentally overwhelmed. I felt insecure, but reality wasn’t as bad as I imagined. My friends on campus were very helpful and supportive,” she recalled.

Yogi expressed her gratitude for the openness and kindness of her friends at FEB UGM. They were always willing to study together and provide guidance when she had trouble understanding certain subjects.

“They were very helpful whenever I didn’t understand something. I could ask them questions, and they even allowed me to photocopy their materials. So, I didn’t feel alone or left behind,” explained her.

Yogi’s university journey didn’t go smoothly. In 2019, she had to pause her studies due to widespread racial tensions against Papuan students in various regions.

As a result, she took a break during her second year and returned to her hometown.

“I considered transferring to another university. But after some thought, I realized my sacrifices were too great to give up, both physically and emotionally. Fortunately, I could persevere with my family and friends’ support,” she said.

After obtaining her degree, Yogi plans to return to her hometown of Awabutu to serve her community. She explained that her hometown is rich in potential but has not been fully developed.

With the education she has achieved, she dreams of making the area a prime destination and improving the welfare of its residents.

“Awabutu is like Dieng, with fertile land and a beautiful lake. If well-managed, it could become a major destination and help boost the local economy,” she added.

Although there are many schools in her hometown, she noted that accessibility to education services remains difficult, especially for students living in villages across the lake. Yogi’s mother, a counseling guidance teacher, has even opened her home to accommodate children who need a place to stay to continue their education.

“I hope to return to Awabutu and contribute to both education and the local economy,” she concluded.

Born and raised in an academic family, Muhammad Daffa Adiibah Sinapoy, better known as Daffa, found the motivation to excel in his studies.

The young man from Southeast Sulawesi achieved the distinction of being Universitas Gadjah Mada’s (UGM) fastest graduate, completing his undergraduate degree in 3 years, 1 month, and 14 days during the 2024/2025 Undergraduate and Applied Undergraduate Graduation Ceremony on Thursday (Nov. 21).

With determination, dedication, and encouragement from his mother, Sinapoy proved that hard work pays off, earning him the title of UGM’s fastest graduate.

Reflecting on his journey, Sinapoy described his academic experience as eventful. The COVID-19 pandemic posed one of his greatest challenges, forcing him to return to Southeast Sulawesi while his peers remained in Yogyakarta.

Despite the obstacles, Sinapoy stayed focused on his goals, believing that challenges present opportunities to grow stronger.

“I sometimes felt out of the loop regarding important class updates and activities, but I remained proactive in seeking information and maintaining communication with friends and lecturers,” he said on Friday (Nov. 22).

Sinapoy attributed his academic success to a well-structured study strategy. He selected a thesis topic aligned with his interests, making the writing process more enjoyable. Effective time management also played a crucial role.

By allocating time proportionally between academics and other activities, Sinapoy maintained a balanced life throughout his studies.

“I believe a good thesis is a completed thesis. My priority was finishing what I started,” Sinapoy stated.

In addition to excelling academically, Sinapoy actively participated in organizational and research activities.

He contributed to the Student Family of Public Policy and Management (Gamapi) in the Student Resource Development Division and served on the Executive Board of the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (Fisipol UGM).

He also served as Deputy Head of the Business Incubation and Development Division at the UGM Young Entrepreneurs Association.

Sinapoy interned at prominent institutions, including the House of Representatives Commission X and the State Secretariat of the Republic of Indonesia, focusing on media analysis and monitoring. He also co-organized PIONEERS 1.0, the first national-level business competition held by his organization.

His research interests revolved around urbanization issues, particularly the new capital city (IKN). He interviewed experts and local figures to explore the project’s social and environmental impacts.

One of his most memorable experiences was serving as a Bilateral Greeter at the Paris Peace Forum, where he engaged directly with heads of state and international delegations, broadening his understanding of diplomacy and global relations.

Sinapoy also demonstrated his commitment to community service during his community service program (KKN) in Moolo Village, Southeast Sulawesi.

He led initiatives such as digital content training for local women’s groups, social media management for the village, and digitizing governance through the Moolo 4.0 program.

“This experience taught me that small contributions can make a big impact. Even after the KKN ended, villagers still reached out to discuss further development,” he shared.

After graduation, Sinapoy plans to pursue higher education and seek career opportunities aligned with his expertise. He aspires to work in multicultural environments where he can positively impact society.

“My focus is on finding opportunities that benefit society while expanding my global perspective,” he explained.

Sinapoy credited his parents as his greatest inspiration. Coming from a family of educators—his father is a lecturer, and his mother is a civil servant—education has always been a cornerstone of his upbringing.

His mother played a crucial role in keeping him on track, particularly during moments of procrastination on his thesis.

“I’m deeply grateful to come from a family that values education highly. My parents’ achievements in law and disaster studies have always inspired me. My father is also a UGM graduate,” he said proudly.

Beyond academics, Sinapoy prioritized maintaining his well-being through sports like tennis and soccer, which helped him manage stress. Spending quality time with family and friends also provided emotional support that kept him motivated.

Sinapoy offered words of encouragement to students striving to complete their studies. He emphasized that mistakes are part of the learning process and urged students to stay consistent and focused while relying on the support of friends, family, and mentors.

“Enjoy the game! Remember, a good thesis is a finished thesis. Calm down, you are doing fine!” he concluded.

Uphe Angelia Maitriani made history as the youngest graduate at the bachelor and applied bachelor graduation ceremony for the 2024/2025 academic year period I at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Thursday (Nov. 28).

The Actuarial Science graduate from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA UGM) completed her undergraduate degree at the age of 20 years, 3 months, and 9 days.

In comparison, the average age of the 1,754 undergraduate graduates was 22 years, 6 months, and 16 days.

Moreover, Maitriani completed her studies in just 3 years and 2 months, while the average undergraduate study period is 4 years and 4 months. She explained that her success is partly due to her early start in education.

“In high school, I was in an accelerated class. I also started university in 2021 and graduated in under 4 years, so it was quicker,” Maitriani said on Friday (Nov. 22).

During her academic journey, Maitriani stated that she didn’t face significant difficulties, even though she was one of the youngest students in her cohort. On the contrary, the one-year age difference with most of her peers often became a source of lighthearted jokes.

As the second of three children who moved from Pekanbaru, Riau, Maitriani received full support from her family.

Though neither of her parents holds a university degree—her father is a private employee, and her mother is a homemaker—they always encouraged Maitriani to do her best.

“My parents aren’t college graduates, but they fully support all their children’s education. I wasn’t pressured, but I was always motivated to give my best,” she said.

Maitriani received the Marga Pembangunan Jaya Scholarship in her third year through UGM’s online system, Simaster. With a final GPA of 3.94, Maitriani proved that focus and effective study strategies are key to success. She has a unique study method.

“I like taking notes on paper during class, not on gadgets. When I need to review, it helps me avoid distractions,” Maitriani said.

Since her first semester, she had already laid out an academic strategy, including when to take courses, do internships, complete KKN, and write her thesis. This planning allowed her to complete all stages of her studies efficiently.

Additionally, she avoided the habit of staying up late to stay focused.

“Don’t make it a habit to stay up late while studying,” Maitriani advised.

One of Maitriani’s major achievements was her thesis, “Optimal Retention of Quota-share Reinsurance by Minimizing Value at Risk and Maximizing Insurance Company Utility Expectation.”

This research reflected her understanding of complex actuarial concepts and demonstrated her contribution to the insurance field.

“This thesis discusses how insurance companies can determine the optimal proportion of risk to reinsure,” she explained.

With her dedication and achievements, Maitriani inspires other students to achieve success through careful planning and strong determination. She hopes other students will not be afraid to dream big and will dare to set strategies early on.

“Graduating early is just a matter of strategy,” she concluded.

Papuana Rosalia Petegau, 23, is one of the 2,049 bachelor and applied bachelor graduates conferred by UGM on Wednesday (Nov. 20).

Earning a Bachelor of Animal Science degree is a special joy for this girl from Mappi Regency, South Papua Province.

For Petegau, completing her undergraduate studies at the UGM Faculty of Animal Science (Animal Science UGM) is a great achievement, especially considering her long journey to this point.

The second of three siblings, she is thankful for the opportunity to study at UGM, particularly since she has now graduated from one of the best universities in the country.

“I am very grateful to be part of the UGM Faculty of Animal Science family. I’ve gained so much from here,” said Petegau on Thursday (Nov. 21).

Petegau shared that being accepted as a student at UGM in 2020 was one of her dreams that had come true. During her time at SMA Negeri 1 Edera Bade Mappi, she had to walk 12 kilometers to reach her school. Given her family’s modest circumstances, she endured this without complaint.

“Yes, walking. School started at 7:30 AM, so I had to leave home at 5:30 AM,” she recalled.

Her father is a farmer who occasionally worked odd jobs as a baggage handler at the port. Meanwhile, her mother had passed away, leaving her to be raised solely by her father.

Despite coming from a humble background, Petegau never lost hope in achieving her dreams. She remained passionate about her studies. After graduating in 2019, she chose not to enroll in college immediately but instead took private lessons in Yogyakarta for a year.

In 2020, she was finally accepted into the Faculty of Animal Science at UGM through the independent admission exam.

“Coincidentally, only two people from my high school were accepted into UGM,” she said.

When she started her life in Yogyakarta, Petegau admitted that she initially struggled to socialize due to language barriers. This was one of the challenges she faced during her studies at UGM.

Nevertheless, she learned a lot and frequently asked her fellow students for help, especially when she did not understand the language, particularly Javanese.

“I learned a lot from my fellow students,” she said.

After earning her bachelor’s degree, Petegau plans to return to Mappi, South Papua, to serve her hometown.

She is eager to help develop her region and is particularly enthusiastic about improving cattle farming there. This is a reasonable goal, as cattle in her area are poorly cared for.

“The cattle are just left to fend for themselves, finding whatever food they can. If they get sick, they eventually die. I feel challenged to learn how to properly care for cattle,” she explained.
